HSV makes no apologies for full-throttle power in its latest Commodore makeover.

The King Kong of Commodores is being unveiled this morning at the Melbourne Motor Show.

Holden Special Vehicles has gone all-out for the final celebration of its 20th birthday, creating a car that sets a new performance benchmark in Australian-made motoring.

It is a 7-litre animal with 370kW and 640Nm, and a 0-100km/h time in the supercar league — quicker than five seconds.

The HSV W427 is being revealed on the opening day of the 2008 Melbourne Motor Show, which runs until March 10, and is already cleared for a limited production run of about 200 cars a year at HSV headquarters in Clayton.

HSV makes no apologies for the car, even at a time when fuel economy and social responsibility are gaining importance in motoring, and says it shows what the company can do and what the VE Commodore can become.

“It's certainly the quickest and most powerful HSV car. It's the ultimate expression of what HSV can do,” company managing director Scott Grant says.

“Why are we doing it? Because we can. I've said that before, but it's true.”

The heart of the W427 is the same LS7 V8 engine used in the US in the Chevrolet Corvette, complete with a dry-sump oil system, a unique cold-air intake and an “active” exhaust system, which runs quiet at idle but opens to a bellowing roar at full throttle.

The show car has been painted in Panorama Silver, the same body colour used for the original HSV VL Commodore — nicknamed the Batmobile — 20 years ago and has a red leather interior.

But most people will be struck by the super-aggressive front styling — which lifts the impact of the VE Commodore to a new level — the 20-inch alloy wheels and the carbon-fibre rear spoiler.

The W427 is the second 7-litre concept from HSV, following a race-bred Monaro that never got beyond a good idea.

Only two of the Monaros were built. One is on display at GM Holden headquarters in Fishermans Bend, the other is for sale in Sydney for more than $900,000.

“We got close to launching a 427 Monaro, but it didn't make it through the system, mainly because of technical issues, but also the price was going way, way up to $200,000 and more,” Grant says.

“The VE architecture provides us with the opportunity to do the car properly, allowing us to drop in the higher-performance engines.

“The level of modification and cost of the previous car was out of control, but this time it's relatively affordable.”

Grant is predicting a price about $125,000 and says all W427s will be built in a special new production area at Clayton.

“We still don't know the final price. The car will be available in July for somewhere around $125,000-plus,” he says.

“That price range is not for everybody, but a fair amount of work has gone into the car.

“The interior treatment is different, the transmission is different, the front fascia is completely different. Apart from the engine, there are new wheels, a six-piston braking package, a rear carbon-fibre spoiler.

“There are quite a few differences around the car and that will make it a car that gives a halo to the HSV brand.”

Grant says customers will be encouraged to watch progress as their cars are built.

“The cars really will be very, very special. We are going to build about four a week. And we will only build them to order. We don't have a sales plan as such.

“We will hand-build these cars. They will come from Holden as a GTS and then we will completely hand-build them. There will be no automated production in terms of assembly.

“Customers will have a unique opportunity to get close to their cars. That could mean a webcam for live updates or they can come and watch.”

Grant says HSV has been looking at a 7-litre engine for more than a year, tapping into the American pipeline that has provided engineering support, and will eventually ship complete engines to Australia.

“We're always looking at powertrains. We've been searching for years for a halo product that says what the brand is about.”

But is the W427 appropriate for 2008?

“The answer to that is from an HSV brand point of view, and not just this car. We are a niche company and we appeal to people who appreciate our sort of cars,” Grant says.

“On a small, limited basis I think the W427 is appropriate for our company and our customers.”

  • has anyone noticed that all of holdens decent cars have got engines from chevrolet, nissan etc. why cant they build their own engines and stop using everyone elses like Ford and be an australian company not an american muscle driven holden cause they cant design a good motor for all you holden fans out there find an australian made car company and stop reeping benifits from skyline motors and chevrolet motors etc.............

  • to the imature Turbo boys, with your forced power bolt ons ,the talk is of a naturally breathing engine, and that is where you judge the real power, the GTR is falsely fed, and like any forced motor, if the GTR had it,s 2 tubos removed it would probably only produce about 250kw ,if it was lucky , i am an admirer of the GTR especially the Godzilla but don,t get carried away. Hey Julian...1987 Lancia Intergralie Group S 4X4 Rallie car, big turbo, 1759cc,,,100kph in 2 secs,,, 447 kw,makes the new Godzilla look like a snail, oh and how long ago was that ? 20 years ?

  • The W427 sounds great. Are people mad? The W427 will be Austrlia's ultimate sports sedan. No questions. Big Engine - of course, look at BMW M5, AMG 6.3 V8 and the new Audi's running 5.0 V10. BMW's - very expensive to replace parts or work on. GTR??? I will be happy driving the W427 around while the Godzilla lovers are replacing their 4th set of turbos and wondering where can get them serviced. Commodore you say? - This W427 will be hand built. If HSV can hand build, Australia's ultimate Sports sedan for only 125k - thats good value I say.

  • I should call it Goof Maker Horribly Slow Vehicle (GM HSV). Clearly you can see some of the new stylish external parts has been stolen from the New Nissan GTR side vents and front bar is slightly restyled. Goof Makers have never had the brains to think of something original but obviously steal something already made and reshape it slightly to suit their range of Horribly Slow Vehicles The new Nissan GTR is way quicker then this and its only a V6. Regardless of the twin turbos, it is quick and responsive. Goof Makers will never learn a V8 7-Litre which will consume alot more fuel then with their current stock engines. Would that also meet emission regulations??? But its not Goof Makers fault because its a Chevrolet Corvette engine not Holden!! Why don't Chev just have their plant based in Aus and scrap the GM name and holden name!!

  • Julian from Melbourne , 29 February 2008 9:20am I found your post quite funny , you do realise that the new Jap Halo car goes 0-100 in 3.3 seconds and 11.6 down the 1/4 mile stock, it will also out handle and perform the new HSV comming up. A price tag of 125 k is going into GTR territory so yes its a nice new toy for HSV fan boys but the GTR pricing looks to have clouded the day

  • I wonder what half of you who criticise this car drive. Everyone is so hardcore on the internet. Stop criticising something you can't afford.

  • People so much negativety. It isn't to everyones taste and thats fine, before some of you hammer me no I'm not a HSV fan and NO I wouldn't own one one but I do like the car for what it is a brilliant showcase of HSV technology HSV suspension and all. A few misconstrued facts from some posters have submitted are it would certainly easily outrun an M3 (except possibly off the mark) but would be aimed at the bigger BMW M5 of which it would hold its own and be a fair bit cheaper. The 427 Monaro never ran at Le Mans it won the Bathurst 24 hour race.

  • I would have liked to see them use the 6.2L Supercharged LS9 from the Corvette ZR1 but I guess it doesn't have the 'ring' of 427 ci. As for everyone who calls it 'primitive', 'crap', 'just a high powered Commodore' and so on - it's a value for money, entertaining sports car. It is actually a whole revision of the Commodore with much better suspension (the MagnaRide is actually on Ferraris and such as well), brakes, the whole works. It's a much better car, but yes it isn't as advanced as a Lambourghini - if it was, it would cost as much.

  • this car is a really good car to seperate the boys from the men all you people bagging holden are too cheap just like youre fords and bmw's. This car is a limited production car for holden lovers that can afford it. All worth it i say i'm already on the list to own one.

ben mcgrath of melbourne Posted on 01 March 2008 7:17am
  • What a waste of time, no more to say here.

    Adam Posted on 29 February 2008 11:43pm
  • i am a holden fan but this car is very over priced, and as much as i would like 1 its cheaper to get a GTS and supercharge it,

Earl of Brisbane Posted on 29 February 2008 8:19pm
  • There is already a great deal of euro-snobbery going on in in the comments here. The LS7 is lighter than a V10 BMW engine, doesn't use more fuel and produces more torque throughout the rev range. It is a high tech engine despite having pushrods. It revs like an OHC engine. You euro-snobs would do well to remember that overhead cams have been around since 1919 and are hardly new technology. So what if it is 7.0L. That is part of the reason it makes so much power and torque. Are you afraid that big horsepower is available to the "bogans" who are not worthy of your Porches and Ferraris?

Simon of Brisbane Posted on 29 February 2008 7:26pm
  • T A X I ! ! .....$125K + - Jesus....you would have to be an absolute BOGUN to buy that

dm of Perth Posted on 29 February 2008 5:21pm
  • WOW, an AMAZINGLY overpriced Commodore!! Now who's going to buy it... all the Redneck and Bogan types haha. They deserve one another smile

    Nick Posted on 29 February 2008 4:44pm
  • yeah agree... still just a Holden.... i spose even bogans need something to get excited about

John Mckain Posted on 29 February 2008 4:42pm
  • wow good to see holden coming up with a new way to get more power

filthy of perth Posted on 29 February 2008 4:36pm
  • Apparently the target demographic is an Old cashed up Bogan...

Darren of Adelaide Posted on 29 February 2008 4:29pm
  • Environmentalcases!!! what is it with car companies you invest more in developing less environmental vehicles when the market of low and no impact green machines is booming...but no one is taking the reigns and supplying the demand....you just keep bending over to the fuel companies...stop driving the top end and leave it to the real engineers like Porsche and BMW and make something usefull. You're spread too thin and this is total wank. I drive a 1.2 litre car and earn more than your top engineers.Keepit real.

Ross Patten of Peregian Beach Posted on 29 February 2008 4:15pm
  • Why not buy a BMW M3? It would be just as quick if not quicker and has heaps better resale.

BMW of Perth Posted on 29 February 2008 3:28pm
  • Piece of crap

Peter Logothetis Posted on 29 February 2008 3:20pm
  • I can buy a GTR for that...forget it.

    SJ Posted on 29 February 2008 3:17pm
  • They needed 7L for 370kw....... its still a commodore mate!

    Gavin Posted on 29 February 2008 3:16pm
  • wow. What innovation! Another model of commodore that I'm sure we'll see wrapped around plenty of street lights. Tell 'em to come back when they can get that much power out of something that isn't so thirsty! Maybe Holden's share prices will hold until then

Andrew of Perth Posted on 29 February 2008 2:51pm
  • What a piece of primitive crap. Spend a bit more and get a GTR which will walk all over this 7L moron mobile in every aspect. Hyundai crap boxes are built better than Holden / Fords.

WoW of Perth Posted on 29 February 2008 2:09pm
  • Lot of money for a Taxi

Ziggy of Goldy Posted on 29 February 2008 1:55pm
  • omg wat an awesome car like 2 see ford build something like this they could never do it. time to play catch up again for them.

    josh Posted on 29 February 2008 1:40pm
  • Nice looking, nice specs but still... $125,000 for what is really just a high powered commodore!!!!

Troy Siemienowicz of Brisbane Posted on 29 February 2008 1:29pm
  • The Carbon Fibre spoiler will save HEAPS of weight!!!!

Paul Sidgen of Sydney Posted on 29 February 2008 1:03pm
  • The Carbon Fibre spoiler will save HEAPS of weight!!!!

Paul Sidgen of Sydney Posted on 29 February 2008 1:00pm
  • Well, I hope the front suspension was upgraded to at least the same std as the racing 427 Monaros. If Ford can have world std front suspension on its current and new Falcons then why not on a CrummyDoor. I could not pay $125,000 for a GT3 class car with crappy suspension. The LS7 should have gone into a Coupe. 4 doors is crass.

    revhed Posted on 29 February 2008 12:31pm
  • Where do I sign up?? Need time to rob a bank!

Thommo of Plainland QLD Posted on 29 February 2008 11:52am
  • good work? just keep putting bigger engines in .......nothing hard about that!!!

Rick Harris Posted on 29 February 2008 11:29am
  • Oh another 427ci coupe by Holden. Lets see if they enter it in the Lemans 24 hour race again, and win... and then pull the pin on the project and say its not profitable enough... Go Holden!

Mike of Perth Posted on 29 February 2008 11:12am
  • these cars are geared (good pun) towards an audience of men(mostly) who appreciate a fire breathing 7L machine. not conservitives who think even the prius is a bit of a thursty car, so of course this car is appropriate. and finally we get to see the LS7 down under!

David of sydney Posted on 29 February 2008 11:05am
  • I want one.

Justin of WA Posted on 29 February 2008 10:30am
  • About bloody time HSV!!! Hooray we finally get the real v8's from america, rather than this pushrod 5.7 litre rubbish. For all you jap fans out there, this car has quad overhead cam as well and a wicked driveline. Oh, and the GTS-R is in production as well. Carries a blueprinted and tricked up cylinder head 6.2 litre EATON SUPERCHARGED engine pumping out 447 KW's. Finally holden is off its arse doing something to keep up.

Julian of Melbourne Posted on 29 February 2008 10:20am
  • Its still just a holden,,

    Adam Posted on 29 February 2008 10:16am
  • WOW, what a tribute to 20 years of HSV. Good work.
