Australia could be seeing bigger versions of the Fiat 500 by 2010.
Bambino as we know it could soon be getting bigger.
Fiat's cute little 500 is taking aim at the Mini Clubman wagon with its own “estate” version expected to be released in 2010.
Fiat Australia boss David Stone said; the Italian company had indicated there would be a “steady stream” of Fiat 500 variants in coming years, the model would be updated in “normal model cycles.”
The first of these variants was the Fiat 500 Abarth, which was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
It is also expected that there will be a Fiat 500 Cabriolet and a Fiat 500 wagon, probably launched in 2010 and 2009 respectively.
However, with huge worldwide demand for the hatch which is the European car of the year, these dates could be pushed back.
In Australia, the Fiat 500 hatch has had a mild start with only 75 sold in the first few weeks of release.
The Fiat 500 estate is inspired by the Bambino wagons of the 1960s and could even carry the same Giardiniera badge worn by that model.
It will retain the same front end and wheelbase as the hatch, but with more rear overhang, an upright tail and alloy roof rails.
Instead of side suicide doors or double rear doors like the Mini, it retains two passenger doors and a simple tailgate.
The extended roofline is expected to improve rear head room and increase cargo space.
