While Porsche is planning for the day when it will have a plug-in electric car based on the Boxster, it is close to full-scale production of a lighter and faster Speedster model.
It will be the first Speedster based on the Boxster and Porsche insiders say the car will be used to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the first Speedster in the Porsche family, a car based on the classic 356. That means the Boxster Speedster must break cover before the end of 2009, pointing to a preview at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December before production in 2010.
The Boxster test car was caught, not surprisingly, by the Carparazzi team at the Nurburgring in Germany. Apart from the lowline windscreen, the car carries camouflage to cover the car's classic double humps behind the headrests along the rear deck. There is no news yet on a powerplant for the car, although Porsche's 3.4-litre flat six is the most likely choice. The car is certain to get a bit of tweaking around the nose and tail, as well as a set of special alloy wheels.
