Primarily known for high-performance sports sedans, BMW is this year celebrating their 75th year of Roadsters.

BMW is currently experiencing a great deal of success with their current roadster, the second generation Z4. Through that 75 years BMW have delivered some truly exceptional designs (the 328, 507 and Z8) and a few absolute shockers (Z1 and Z3). We are going to take a look at the good ones, which unfortunately are just not seen on Australian roads.

BMW 328
1936 – 1940

With only 464 in built, this classic roadster is a stunning example of classic proporations for the period. It also saw considerable success on the track.

BMW 507

1956 and 1959.

The 328 set a standard for BMW with a high quality sporting tourer and they followed it up with the superb Albrecht Graf Goertz styled 507.

The 507 was the epitome of elegance in the mid-50s. But unfortunately it had to compete against the Mercedes 300SL, which was equally stylish but even more desirable. While the 507 was not a sales success at the time, the fact that only 251 were built makes it an extremely exclusive and sought-after car now. The all-alloy 3.2 litre V8 in the 507 was good for a top speed of 220 km/h.

BMW Z8
2000-2003

A re-interpretation of the BMW 507 for the new millenium. With high-performance five-litre V8 off just under 300kW the Z8 had the performance to go with its beautiful looks. It lapped the Nürburgring in 8:15 minutes. While Jeremy Clarkson may think little of the Z8, with just 5700 built the Z8 is now a highly sort after modern classic. The Z8 was a featured car in the Bond movie The World is not Enough.
