Disappearing car door

Unusual door design by Jatech.

What a clever idea... do away with side-hinged doors altogether, eliminate the B-pillar, and get better access through a rotary drop door. But we'd miss designs like the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing 300SL.

  • I actually thought about this before ever seeing this video but am not excited by the idea because of rain and security. It would be very easy for a bad guy to hop in back as your wife or daughter were entering the vehicle. If you had a dog or other pet it might be hard to keep it inside every time you open the door. Hopefully the windows will lower or you would have to open the door every time you pass a toll booth or pick up a fast food order. And, it would be hard to quickly jump in or out of the car when it is raining. The front and rear interior would get wet, as would passengers, and heat and air-con would escape significantly. In the event of an accident and people are trapped inside without battery power, how would they get out? How would the first responders apply the jaws of life to rescue trapped passengers? What about elderly people that require the support of the door to get in and out of a car? If you are under assault, or if the car malfunctions, and you need to jump out to save your life, you could die waiting for the door, and that’s assuming it will open while the car is operating and in motion. And if you are T-boned. the vertical support pillar is not there…

  • This doesn’t strike me as very safe.  The mecahnism is obviously powered and in the event of a crash it could potentially be very difficult to get out, or get people out, especially if the floorpan has warped.  Also it could be very problematic if your battery goes flat because then you wouldn’t be able to get in to pop the bonnet to charge it back up.  A for effort and style though.
