Subaru Impreza revealed

The all new Subaru Impreza range goes mainstream with a new look and more safety features.

Subaru revealed its new Impreza range at picturesque Byron Bay today. The rolling green hills of the country’s most easterly point was an apt setting for the new look Impreza, where traditional buzzwords like ‘muscle’, ‘aggression’ and ‘performance’ made way for more refined variants like ‘elegance’, ‘cosmopolitan’, ‘sophistication’ and ‘safety’.

The range will debut at this year's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney in October.

Subaru is offering four Imprezas: R, RX, RS, plus the turbocharged WRX manual.

The roomiest ever Impreza is launched as a five-door hatch, with a four door sedan expected to arrive in Australia around this time next year.

Subaru is trying to steer away from WRX as the ‘hero’ model and has instead focused more on the mainstream Impreza versions, in a bid to attract a more diverse consumer base.

In his launch speech, Subaru managing Director Nick Senior said: “..While the emotion and headlines for this new Impreza may well centre around the WRX version, it is the normally-aspirated models that provide us with our greatest opportunity.

“To be able to sell a $24,490 vehicle with five star safety, four star pedestrian safety, all-wheel drive, anti-lock braking system, Vehicle Dynamics Control, 2-litre double overhead cam engine, air conditioning, six airbags, cruise control and the rest of the equipment …is exciting for the brand.” said Senior.

Subaru is highlighting the new range’s safety credentials — the new, lighter and stronger Impreza has as a five-star ANCAP rating for occupant safety, giving it one of the strongest safety stories in its class.

“Undeniably we have the high ground in the small car sector when it comes to total safety,” Senior claimed.

Senior said key structural points on all Imprezas are now reinforced by high tension steel, which has increased rigidity and ride comfort. Subaru claims improvements have been achieved with Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) in all Imprezas.

The new-generation Impreza comes in normally-aspirated and turbo charged variants. The new double overhead camshaft provides improvements in power (more than 20%) and torque (more than 7%) over the SOHC engine used in the superseded 2.0i and RV. Compared with previous models, the turbo-charged engine delivers smoother torque from lower revs.

As usual, All Wheel Drive is a standard feature. Improved ride comfort and more interior and cargo space are the result of a longer wheelbase and new double-wishbone suspension.

Aesthetically, the sophisticated new style is an obvious change from earlier models.

The new shape has sparked debate among WRX purists, who claim the rounder, softer Impreza is too bland.

The MY08 Impreza hatchback is slightly taller and shorter, emphasised by a distinctive shoulder line that carries through to the front end for a more integrated feel.

Clear headlight lenses and rear LED lights with metallic highlights distinguish the premium look. The change is consistent, not only outside but also throughout the interior of the vehicle.

The sweeping twin-cockpit design offers greater head and shoulder room, and the use of plastics and other materials throughout the cabin is offset by aluminium-style highlights, across the range.

Subaru Impreza starts at $24,440 for the R model, through to $39,990 for the WRX.

  • Will Subaru ever learn? They had something good some years back but their styling has let them down on so many occasions and this hatch is so dull... I've been wondering if and when to buy a new Subaru but I'm so happy with my old BF Legacy turbo wagon that I think the only option is to get another 2nd hand BG wagon. I drove the 3.0R Spec B and it was a nice car but not much fun compared to my old bucket! Mechanically these new Imprezas might be great but Subaru have quite simply lost it!

  • I can't believe that these were designed buy the same guy that designs Alfa Romeo! Alfas are the hottest looking cars one the planet and the WRX just isn't! We'll have to see what Subaru does to recover from this mistake.

  • Sheesh, I've just spent 18 months convincing my partner that our new car purchase shouldn't be a Mini Cooper Cabrio Sidewalk but should be a Subura WRX STI. Of course, she's the one who gets car guide delivered to her email and, with great glee, she broke the news to me last night that the new range prolly wouldn't be to my liking. Hello Mini Garage - here we come ! All the wasted hours of debate .... the joy of thinking I'd won ... the severe disappointment - thanks designers :-(

  • HAVE YOU SEEN THE DESIGN OF THE UPCOMING MITSUBISHI LANCER???? YUP, IT IS ALSO A HATCHBACK LOOK ALIKE!!!! So not only Subaru kills Impreza, Mitsubishi plans to kill Lancer in a similar fashion! Guys Guys Guys......I'm afraid I got a bad news for y'all.....Car Manufacturer have ditched the rear boot and rooting for a hatchback instead. All in the name of attracting more 'normal people' to increase sale.

  • as usual people bagging the new model - they obviously buy for different reasons than realistic people. congratulations to subaru for their advancement in the ancap ratings. the knockers should try & buy something with the technology & safety levels achieved in the my08 models for that price - they'll be looking for a while. a large number of the detracters will buy the new model regardless. as for the tribeca, have a look at the upgrade we will see here soon - a vast improvement on the old model

  • Sorry Subaru, we thought you would have learnt from your last mistake but you got this one wrong again, I have owned two Imprezas but would not consider one of the new ones

  • Worst impreza ive seen in my life subaru have lost there minds, and putting the Tribeca ass on it worst decision, must say the WRX STi looks half decent though

  • As a former owner of a 2004 wrxsti, and forever an admirer of the subaru brand, I'm afraid to say they've blown it all away with this new design. This looks like a car I'd buy my grandmother. What a shame.

  • I have to agree with all of the above comments......I for one used to like the Subaru look and have considered buying a WRX but after this new look I will not be even entertaining the idea of buying one

  • I thought I was looking at pictures of the BMW 1 series for a minute there. I put this car in with the Tribeca in the 'Ooops' folder by Subaru

  • Having driven and owned Subaru¿s for many years, I was preparing to upgrade my beloved Bugeye WRX with Fuji Heavy Industries new refined replacement for the Impreza WRX only to be disappointed. Keeping an open mind I visited my local Subaru dealer and inspected the new car. Plastic everywhere from the interior trim to the engine bay, poor quality front seats and although there may be more rear passenger space, too bad if you have baby capsules, because you sure won¿t be using the boot space. Time to move on either to a Run out My07 or the Liberty range or leave the brand.

  • All I can think of is that the Chief Designer at Subaru must have first started experimenting with drugs when they presented that ¿bug eyed¿ horror. Subaru rushed to improve the design, (he must have been in rehab), and now he has well and truly fallen off the wagon. I was forced to update and I was so turned off by the new Impreza that I changed from the WRX to the Outback and now to a Ford. I was hoping that this model might be the one to encourage me back to Subaru. No doubt that won¿t happen until the current design team move back to BMW.

  • The WRX for at least the last decade had an attitude which screamed out confidence and pure grunt, im not a huge fan of the Impreza's but I have to say, what on earth was subaru thinking releasing the Impreza range with this new look? Looks more like an updated Toyota Corolla, Subaru have killed it.

  • I cant believe subaru have killed their star player, and turned it into a ford focus, cross hyundai, cross mazda.... it is the ugliest POS ever... This was a huge disappointment, i really hope that their sales bomb dramatically and they can go back to when it was a good car (classic ones). The liberty got better looking while the impreza got worse... we had hopes that they would have done something nice with the 08, but nope, they killed it all to try and attract the "hot hatch" market, unfortunately for subaru the wrx didnt even make it into the top 3... (drive review) i hope the sales bomb!

  • Please, please, please can the STI be a sedan with flared wheel arches. The STI needs to remain credible if Subaru want to maintain its following (if indeed this is what Subaru want). Sure, develop the base models to attract a wider appeal and maybe even a toned down WRX for the less ostentatious out there but don¿t destroy the appeal of the STI. A continued ¿tough¿ STI could have a positive effect on the marketability of the standard WRX (which Subaru may need).

  • I really like the new WRX, it looks great. I can't wait to drive it, however I don't have any time because I am too busy sitting in front of my PC, posting on web forums. No wonder I can't form any relationships with any real people. Please email me, podcast, myspace, youtube, facebook, ebay or PM me. I need the PC attention and a LIFE. Loser.

  • I have allways enjoyed the lines in all of the Impreza's when launched, especially the bold wide bonnet scoops, distinct bold shape and just the impreza look. It is a dissapointment to see this car now just resembles a BMW 1-Series. If i wanted one of those i would get one. I think i was planning on buying a WRX soon then i definately would have to go back a few years. I guess change is good sometimes but getting rid of the back is a clear mistake. Perhaps a struggle for a more European look... but definately a mistake.

  • It looks like a car suitable for cross dressers and pregnant women. Thanks for killing the impreza forever Subaru, thankgoodness you still have the liberty. I will be looking foward to my new EVO X, thats for sure.

  • i dont like this model compared to the classic WRX's and the like - i think personally subaru has gone downhill instead of racers and reasonably priced sports and rally cars we now have city cars which everyother man and his dog can get from anyother company i think subaru should focus on the older things

    Brendan Posted on 04 September 2007 1:06pm
  • Yeah, I agree with Darryl,I bought a Black with "GOLD'"wheels 98' WRX and would love to update BUT.... I too think they (Subaru) have lost their appeal.(over the YEARS) Get back too aggessive looking WRX's & STI's or the fans will start looking elsewhere (EVO's)

Chris Hands Posted on 04 September 2007 1:06pm
  • I'm a V8 fan, but I've always liked the agressive look of the WRX. I suppose this is the road Subaru had to take to attract more buyers, but, "Sorry Fellas", the hatch just doesn't do it for me, in my opinion IMPREZA's GONE SOFT. Definately gone from "AGRESSIVE" to "COSMOPOLITAN". Safety and the other improvements could of been implemented on the old Muscle shape. There's a 2008 4 door sedan you say, I say, "Bring It On".

    Craig Posted on 04 September 2007 1:06pm
  • What a freakin ugly peice of crap as an impreza fan for 11 years looks like i'll be buyin an evo

Kris Guglielmucci Posted on 04 September 2007 1:06pm
  • The last 10 yrs of the Impreza's life in Aust has (in my view) stamped the Impreza WRX as a "heros" car - a "full sick bro" car forever. In saying that tho, the older models MY99-07 are fantastic sports cars to drive - esp the Sti range - as well as being aesthetically pleasing. The new one looks like a cross between a Hyundai Accent and a Mazda 3 - and imo, should be scrapped immediately!!! Honda > all end of story smile

    Quentin Posted on 04 September 2007 12:48pm
  • This car looks way too much like a Kia Rio, the back end looks like it was ripped off a Mazda 3 and the front lights look like they were taken from a BMW . The Subaru Impreza needs to be bold, different and innovative - its a rally car, a car which should be a trend setter in the market, not a copy.

    Nathan Posted on 04 September 2007 12:26pm
  • Just when I reach the position in life to treat myself to a new WRX they come out with this ..........this THING. They had better hope it wins in the forests otherwise they will have lost every bit of ther reputation not just respect and appeal. I'll buy something else that I can enjoy looking at in the garage and walk up to proudly in the car park.
