WE turn the spotlight on automotive's newest and brightest stars, as we ask the questions to which you want the answers. Ultimately, however, there is only one question that really needs answering would you buy one?
This is Mercedes-Benz's entry level petrol E-Class sedan with plenty of BlueEfficiency technology to cut fuel consumption and emissions. It has seats for four, five at a pinch and there's plenty of kit for the money as well as the Benz badge on the bonnet. It counts for a lot.
This one goes for $95,300 and that is expandable upwards easily once you start ticking the options boxes or go for the "packages".
BMW's bland looking but capable 5-Series and the new Audi A6 or you could go the HSV route and get a hairy-chested Aussie brute. Lexus has a new GS350 coming out and there's Volvo's forgotten S80. Then again, you could take a punt with your hundred grand and go for the new Saab 9-5 Aero.
Power comes from a 1.8-litre, direct injection, four-cylinder, twin-turbos generating 150kW and 310Nm - ample to propel the largish E250 with real purpose and retains impressive fuel economy. It drives the rear wheels through a six-speed auto `box.
Really well, better than you'd think - it's a Mercedes-Benz and they have been making cars for more than a century. Push the throttle and away it goes, even fully loaded as was the case when we drove it. There's even a decent exhaust note to tickle your fancy.
Impressive at 7.2-litres/100km on premium.
Gets a four star rating
Gets a five star crash rating, has an extensive range of safety gear including stuff like Attention Assist that monitors drowsiness and flashing brake lights governed by brake force. Seven air bags, stability control, Pre-safe crash preparation - pretty much everything you can think of.
Superb, wafts along in near silence, well modulated ride, responsive dynamics, plenty of luxury, relatively roomy interior, excellent seats. Bi-xenons, leather, premium audio, linguatronic voice control, Bluetooth, Command cockpit management.
We had a good old crack and the E250CGi is not a sports sedan by any stretch of the imagination - it's a sporty family sedan and as such, is a good thing to drive in multiple environments. It's all you need really.
The price is high but it's a lot of car, pity is just misses out on the Luxury Tax break at 7.0-litres/100km. maybe next time.
