Mazda6: basic is the way to go

  • By Paul Pottinger
  • The Sunday Telegraph
image The sub-$30,000 Limited sedan is the pick of the Mazda6 range.

Regular readers may have formed the impression by now that we hold the second-generation Mazda6 in a favourable light.

For it's a triumph: a quicker, more efficient, bigger, more refined and better-value incarnation of the car that, in its original 2002 form, acted like a dose of uber-strength Viagra on the then-flaccid medium-car class.

The newbie's quality is such that it doesn't so much lead its class as transcend it. Alfas, Audis and other front-wheel-drive Euros are deeply embarrassed, in both dollar and dynamic terms.

And the 6's essentials permeate the range. Drivetrains and safety measures — including Dynamic Stability Control and curtain airbags — are as standard on the humblest $29,740 manual Limited sedan as on the $46,910, all-leather-and-big-rims Luxury Sports Hatch automatic.

So, although most punters are opting for the mid-spec Classic and 30 per cent of early buyers for the exxier variants, there's no compelling reason not to go for the Limited editions.

Although the five-speed auto is a sound unit, it's when teamed with a six-speed manual and riding on 16-inch steel wheels that the least expensive Mazda6 becomes the best drive of the range. It's even more agile and adjustable when pressing on, and its ride is slightly less terse in daily running.

Cosmetic upgrades account for the near-$20K price differential between entry and upper levels. Although the Limited misses out on alloys, nice upholstery, power seats and (quite annoyingly, actually) a trip computer, it represents better value than the first-gen model.

All variants feature the smooth, refined MZR 2.5-litre, four-cylinder S-VT petrol engine, good for 125kW at 6000rpm and 226Nm at 4000rpm.

Fuel consumption for the Limited manual is 8.4 litres per 100km, and the zero-to-100km/h run takes around eight seconds in the manual.

That slick six-speeder is available on the Limited sedan, the Classic sedan and hatch and the Luxury Sports hatch. The five-speed auto is available on Limited sedans, Classic sedans, hatches and wagons, Luxury sedans and hatches and the Luxury Sports hatch. Upper-spec autos feature steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

All this is very nice, to the extent that Luxury iterations almost live up to the name (though even such embellishments as they have don't quite elevate the cabin to prestige level). Still, viewed in isolation, the top models are brilliant buys.

Except if you should happen to drive one back to back with the Limited manual, which costs some $12K less (the auto comes in at $31,800).

The electronic steering is a touch vague just off centre, but fully informative and capable when the almost alarmingly sharp turn-in is being enjoyed.

Only a want of low-down torque prevents the 6' impersonation of a sports sedan being completely convincing.

Although the graceful hatch is the most popular 6 body shape, the Limited comes only in sedan form (but with the bonus of superior rear vision).

If you're not scared shiftless of manual transmissions or besotted by fripperies, the entry-level Limited is not only the best car in its class but — even more impressively — the best Mazda6.

  • No one wants to give me a suitable answer for this question! How do I check the firmware if I bought an iphone that is unactivated? I can’t check it through iTUNES because it says I need to activate it, and I tried the emergency call thing and that doesn’t work. I need to know the firmware that way I can find out the appropriate method to unlock it. Help please?

  • haha some ppl here are hilarious .. the point is to give opinion about the car.. not to criticize the people who like it.. how lame.

I like the Audi .. love it actually.. but the mazda 6 is awesome too.. very nice car .. no sex appeal? who cares abt sex appeal.. it just looks nice ... want sex appeal? Then work on your self!

  • What I don’t understand is how this car (on quite an average 125kW and 226Nm) is able to launch itself from 0-100kmh in around 8 seconds!!?? That’s just insane for a family car pulling only 125kWs. To be honest I don’t believe that - unless this thing is made from carbon fibre or something. Anyone know its Kerb weight?

  • I have just bought a new 6. I traded in a BA Falcon - why didnt i do it sooner. I have been a Falcon or Commodore man for the past 30 years
Both of those have now totally lost the plot
My new 6 is fantastic, rides well, comfortable, economical and looks great.
I looked at the new falcon & commodore (too bloody dear now & too uneconomical) the A4 & Alfa (buying a name only - too bloody dear), Hyundai (plastic)
I will recommend the Mazda 6 to anyone - it is quality at a reasonable price ($32000)
    with3 year unlimited warrenty

  • I drove one as a loan car for a day. It was a Classic Hatch. After 2 minutes being on board, I had to say, it’s one of the best sedans I’ve ever driven. I had a bmw 330i for 3 years. The 6 drives like the beemer (nice sports suspension) and has similiar if not better interior & exterior built quality. Considering it’s not even half price of the 330, this is very impressive.

  • Mazda sold a record 6530 vehicles - up 3 per cent on the previous May record of 6345 set last year. It has an 8.7 per cent market share. Better than Audi and Alfa combined. This proves that what a few people think is irrelevant, it is what the car buyers at large do with their money that counts.

In the latest Wheels Magazine (June 2008), the new Mazda 6 was road tested against the new Honda Accord 2.4, new Ford Mondeo and a Skoda. The Mazda 6 won. It was also judged the best looking car of the four cars.

  • People who need a car to have “sex appeal” have a problem with their sex life. People who puke over the looks of any car, have a health problem or mental problem.

  • Ouch! Looks are subjective? I would say more deceptive. Went out to have a look at the 6 on the weekend and quickly realised why they only show fast moving shots on the ads. CX-7 looks fantastic (but it sucks fuel like a Territory & for so much car there is so little room) so I probably had high expaectations for the new 6.  Alas, I want to drive a good looking car. Oh, and riddle me this, why all the retro chrome work, is there a designer at Mazda who is missing all the chrome from their 1970’s Holden/Ford/Valiant days?? Nearly puked up my latte.

  • Looks are subjective. To me, this car looks okay, while Alfa cars look ugly and are known to be of poor quality. Anyway, the Mazda 6 should have included GPS in the luxury version and the engine should have been improved to produce higher than 125 KW, because the Honda Accord 2.4 litre engine can churn out 150 KW.

  • you are right mover & shaker, dont compare this car with audi or alfa. It does not look like a glorified vw & has much better reliability than any alfa ever made. Go back to sipping your latte you euro trash snob!

mick of nsw Posted on 12 April 2008 1:29pm
  • Boring.. No sex appeal.. Don’t compare this with the likes of an Audi or even Alfa.. They have street appeal. No one turns heads for a cheap family sedan. I would not turn up to a car wash cafe in this. Social suicide. Some have standards, others buy Mazdas. eeerrrkkk!!
