Hyundai i30: a Korean beauty

Hyundai's Euro-styled i30 hatch has hit the ground running in Australia, handicapped only by its own popularity in other world markets.

Essentially the i30 is a five-door version of the Elantra, the stylish hatch is the key to Hyundai Australia realising a 2007 sales target of 50,000 new cars.

It is priced from a particularly sharp $18,990. However, almost before it is in showrooms the company is conceding that supply is an issue.

“We have worked very hard to get this car and have succeeded to the extent that we are the only market in the world outside Western Europe and Korea to have it available,” Hyundai Australia's chief executive Steve Yeo says. “However, we are only going to be able to get about 2500 cars before the end of the year.”

Yeo says the supply constraints will not be solved in the short term as production capacity at the Korean plant is already running at the limit.

“There is a new plant being built in the Czech Republic that will increase production but it will not be operating until about 2009 ... until then we will have to make do,” Yeo says.

The i30; the first of a new international nomenclature for the Hyundai brand was styled at Hyundai's European design and technical centre in Russelsheim, Germany, and benchmarked against the best of the Euro small hatches, including Ford Focus and VW Golf.

In Australia the expectation is that the i30 will also attract interest from buyers shopping the leading Japanese small hatches in Toyota Corolla and Mazda3. The car has been 'localised' for Australia with bespoke damper settings, spring rates and steering tune following severe criticism of the original Elantra.

“We took serious notice of the comments on the Elantra and this time have spent a lot of time and effort testing in Australian conditions and adjusting the tuning... especially for the local market,” Yeo says.

The i30 will be available in three trim levels, with both a 2.0-litre petrol (105kW and 186Nm) and 1.6-litre common rail diesel (85kW and 255Nm) available from launch. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic is offered on the petrol engine; while the diesel comes with a five-speed manual and will add the automatic option around December.

Pricing starts with the SX petrol manual starting at $18,990 with a $2000 premium for the automatic.

The base diesel model is $21,490. The mid-range SLX manual is $23,490 in petrol and $25,990 for the diesel, while the range-topping SR comes in petrol only at $26,490 for the manual.

Equipment levels in the cars are generally high with standard fare in the SX including ABS, dual front airbags, anti-whiplash front headrests, power windows and heated exterior mirrors, remote central locking, reach and rake adjustable steering wheel.

There is also a height adjustable driver's seat, air conditioning with pollen filter, integrated iPod and USB connections, four-speaker stereo and 15-inch steel wheels. Neither the base nor the mid-range models offer standard stability control but it is available as part of a Protectz pack at $1790 for the SX (ESP, side and curtain airbags) or $990 for the SLX, which already has the extra airbags.

The SLX also gains over the SX in standard 16-inch alloys with wider 205/55 rubber, fog lamps, steering wheel mounted audio and cruise controls (on petrol models only), automatic climate control, trip computer, two additional speakers, leather-trimmed wheel and gear lever.

The top of the range petrol-only SR offers ESP and traction control as standard, 17-inch bright finished alloys with 225/45 rubber, body kit of side skirts and rear spoiler, premium radio with in-dash six-stacker CD and leather-trimmed seat bolsters.

Cabin materials are of a good standard and styling is excellent.

And the i30 utilises the Euro-hatch formula of long wheelbase, wide wheel stance and short, high rear overhang, maximising interior depth.

  • Awsome Car—looks great got all the good wraps / reviews. Fuel Economy is outstanding according to recent tests. People need to learn to get over the european brand names and step back to reality.  check out the JD Powers quality studies Hyundai over took BMW and Mercedes by over 20 spots. Just like the German Bakery in Nth Ryde Bmw will be run chineese.

  • Just bought one, the basic diesel, most impressed so far. Best seating I've had in 40 years of driving, excellent back support, fully adjustable. Good sound system, I can actually hear music with brilliant clarity! Still checking out the economy, but so far the fuel gauge has hardly moved in 200 kms. As I'll be travelling at least 80 kms a day to and from work that's a very big plus.

I agree with craig, i cant believe BMW have allowed the design (not sure what they could do though)
    End Quote.

I don't think BMW would bother with taking Hyundai up on the design. If they did that, it would just help promote Hyundai and probably draw attention away from their 1 Series cars!! Not something they'd want to do.

Who cares if the design has been copied or if it looks like another car. It is the car itself that matters. In a space of three days I saw it fell in love with it. Took it for a test drive and then brought it. This will be me third Hyundai. the first was a 1996 Lantra and I spent $5.00 on it besides services, etc in six years and did 100,000k. My second is a Sonata which I have had for 3 years and I have spent nothing on it expect again services, etc. Do not knock the i30 until you have check it out. I was so impressed that I paid the extra $4500 for the SLX. Unless you have owned the i30 like any other car do not knock it because you have no idea what it is like. This by far the best Hyundai that has been made so far. Knockers my only suggestions is that you get a life or buy yourself a three wheel bike which would be much better suited to your mentality or stop talking pure rubbish. Thanks gospel I agree with you.

  • I have been a diesel man from way back, since when I had a Plymouth Wagon with a Perkins P6 'transplant' and hence have been on the lookout for an 'oiler' with Auto at a reasonable price. Too many, even from Japan, are geared to the European market and are thus not offered as automatics. I believe that at the price Hyundai's i30 may very well hit the 'jackpot.' A recent review suggested that the only thing that spoiled it, was the maker's name. 'Cherie's' comments would seem to suggest that things are a changing, and I wish the company every success. • I choose i30 as my daily car last week, and I'm really satisfied with this. It's simply lovely and gives me brilliant driving.. I also had a perception about Hyundai car but now totally changed!
I know people still have perception but this one is anyway different.  i30 is truely amazing car. Love it.

  • It's amazing - all the twaddle that gets posted here. It is only a car, for heavens sake! Price (value for money), reliability, economy and performance are what matters. Appearance and styling (copied or not) is really irrelevant in this class of vehicle. Grow up kids!

  • Whats all this argument reguarding its resemblance to a beamer or a mazda 3 or whatever. So what if hyundai were inspired by other makes. The fact is the i 30 looks great. Not only that, it is consierable cheaper than its Jap and euro counterparts and ofers a 5 year unlimited kilometer waranty….bmw dont offer that. Any one questioning the reliability and build quality should consult the U.S JD powell report for faults per 100 cars which has Hyundai at 3 behind only Porshe and lexus while bmw and Vw are down among the bottom half dozen manafacturers.Anybody who is prepared to put brand perception aside and look at this car with a open mind will come to the same opinion i did. This is a briliant car, the best to ever wear the hyundai badge.

  • People who say Hyundai's are crap has never owned one so until you do keep ya pie hole shut. A friend of mine at work has a Hynudai Accent he purchased brand new and has over 340,000kms on the clock with nothing but your reglular and major services. Those saying it's a copy of the BMW 130 (which is one ugly car) and Volvo C30 (not as ugly, but still ugly) need to have a good think. They have all been designed in Europe by Europeans so of course they are going to have similarities. But if you want to point one car out they all copied from it's got to be the Mazda 3 which was out before all of them and is till the best looking hatch on the market.

Jeremy Starr Posted on 16 October 2007 5:00pm
  • The Hyundai i30 failed to score a maximum five-star rating for adult occupancy in Euro NCAP testing, in what will be seen as a blow to the Korean marques attempts to emulate European hatches.

Although the i30 scored enough points overall for a five-star rating, it did not achieve the minimum points required.

The driver would risk injuries to right femur and the tibia in a collision, while structures in the dashboard could injure occupants´ knees and femurs said NCAP.

The i30 received three out of five stars for child protection, while two from four star were awarded for pedestrian protection.

  • hyundai = crap
    bmw = god

  • 5 years and to the dump, you euro car snob.My wifes Getz is 4 years old,it still has a year remaining of its 5 yr warranty, although we have never had to use it.The Getz cost $15000 drive away,it is still worth 10k,my BA Falcon SR cost $33000 it is now worth about 17k. Do the math. These cars are made so that average people can afford to drive reasonbly priced, reliable vehicles, not for people who get off on wearing their keyrings outside of their pockets for the world to see.

darryl visser Posted on 16 October 2007 9:53am
  • I agree with craig, i cant believe BMW have allowed the design (not sure what they could do though) - the rear and side profile is a complete rip-off of the 1 series….. But i guess thats where the similarities stop. Rob is right in the fact that you buy cheap you get rubbish. Havent yet been able to work out what the "30" stands for, probably a rip-off of the bmw 130i model numbering…...

stephan senkins Posted on 15 October 2007 2:43pm
  • Like all Asian cars they are copies of copies -It doesn't remove the fact that you get what you pay for, Buy cheap get rubbish - These are throw away cars 5 years and to the dump, They will never match the Europeans in design and safety - Look at the New Renault Clio - best selling car in Europe 5 star safety rating by NCAP, Mazda have already copied it - It;s called a Mazda 2. Yes the Hump-di is a copy of a beemer 130 i. I only wish they would get the numbers in order I 30 what does the 30 stand for?

rob caris Posted on 15 October 2007 9:51am
  • I think the i30 is great ive test driven alot of different cars and found the i30 drives much better than some of the bigger names and as for value for money well i will say no more. Also as far as it goes for all those who are mocking the i30 saying it resembles a shape of another car well you all need to re- educate your selves as i can write a list as to how many of these companys have designed cars similar to eachother over and over again.  I dont understand as in the end when buying a new car we all want value for money at a low price . so why are people so synical?.

    danniela Posted on 15 October 2007 9:44am
  • the i30 front reminds me of the the proton Gen2.  anyone remembers that car? side profile has shades of the beemer 1 series.

    Pete Posted on 10 October 2007 9:49am
  • It doesn't matter whether they indeed copy somebody else design or not.  When I look at the car, something is not right especially from behind.  Even the latest Toyota Corolla hatch looks much better!

    Colin Posted on 09 October 2007 5:03pm
  • Let's not forget, from side-on the styling is an almost-exact copy of the Mazda3 and the new Subaru Impreza ... I've never been more confused trying to identify a car from a distance! grin

    Buddha Posted on 09 October 2007 3:49pm
  • I agree with Craig - The design seems to be a copy of BMW 1 series and the Volvo C30.  Then of course the name has the '30' of the Volvo, and the 'i' of the BMW!
imitation is the nicest form of flattery!

    John M Posted on 09 October 2007 2:22pm
  • i am suprised that BMW have allowed this design as there is an incredible likeness to the 1series models.Even the styling of the badges.
