Ford's midsize, mid-range Mondeo Zetec hatch with a new, smaller capacity, high efficiency, turbo petrol engine called Ecoboost.

Peter Barnwell road tests and reviews the Ford Mondeo Ecoboost and answers the big questions.

WE turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars as we ask the questions to which you want the answers. But there's only one question that really needs answering -- would you buy one?

What is it?

This is Ford's midsize, mid-range Mondeo Zetec hatch with a new, smaller capacity, high efficiency, turbo petrol engine called Ecoboost. It's used in a few other vehicles including the Volvo XC60 T5 and S60T5 and Range Rover's new Evoque. Falcon is allegedly getting this engine sometime soon but we aren't sure any more.

How much?

Retails for $37,790 plus on roads.

What are competitors?

Many including the Mazda6, Honda Accords, Peugeot 508, Hyundai i45, Kia Optima, Toyota Camry and others.

What's under the bonnet?

It's a 2.0-litre petrol four cylinder with direct fuel injection and variable cam timing on the inlet and exhaust sides. The turbocharger is integrated into a sheet metal housing located near the exhaust manifold for efficiency gains and to reduce turbo "lag." Good for 149kW/320Nm output with torque max' starting at a low 1750rpm.

How does it go?

Like a train, definitely doesn't feel like a 2.0-litre. Spanish-made engine is a cracker and makes light work of propelling this 1500kg-plus hatch.

Is it economical?

Claimed combined consumption is 8.0-litres/100km.

Is it green?

Scores 3.5 stars from the Green Vehicle Guide. Passes Euro 5 emissions regulations.

Is it safe?

Five stars.

Is it comfortable?

Very, big car for the class with plenty of room inside and Zetec model generously equipped with luxuries like dual zone climate control, Human Machine Interface (HMI) offering voice control to many functions, Sony premium audio, Bluetooth phone, auto wipers and headlights, hill start assist and a serviceable cloth upholstery.

What's it like to drive?

Good, plenty of get-go right off idle and through to maximum engine speed. You'd better watch it on the freeway or get a ticket. Engine is impressive - smooth, quiet and can be fuel-efficient. Zetec has a sport edge to its handling and ride, but not too much. Good turning circle, slick six-speed Powershift twin clutch manumatic "makes" the vehicle.

Is it value for money?

Good against the competition and considering the generous standard equipment.

Would we buy one?

Maybe... we'd look at the diesel first, but the Ecoboost car costs less and runs smoother and quicker. Mondeo is a good looker and possibly the biggest car in its class, so there's another incentive.

  • The Mondeo is clearly a very good motor car.  If some motorists are so stuck in a rut to think you cannot buy a Falcon because it is a taxi, (stupid), maybe if Ford branded the car with a more Aussie names, they would sell more?

  • The Mondeos are well designed and the engine out here is excellent. Well done to ford for the advances they have made with their cars in recent times.

  • In Germany, Mercedes Benz are taxis, would you buy one?

  • Auto of QLD - I beg to differ, people would only rubbish it’s as if it would have Falcon on it and to most people a Falcon is a taxi. Who wants to buy a taxi no matter how good it is?

  • I drove one with diesel motor 7,500 mile around Britain a year ago and it was very good it surprised me. The economy rivalled a Barina and the power that of a six in a large wagon with 3 adults and, our luggage. It is a pity that car companies steal every bit of savings you would ever get from the motor in the sale price of a diesel powered car!

  • Those star ratings are nonsense, they don’t even line up with the comments in the “review”. “Claimed”, “possibly”, all useful terms for an unbiased report ... At least the typos make it feel like it was written by a person.

  • I also differ from Phuong. I think the Mondeo and Kia Optima are the best looking in this class followed by the Mazda and the Hyundai. Sister company Kia seeks to produce better looking cars than Hyundai.

  • I beg to differ Phuong take a look at the Mondeo Titanium wagon and tell me it’s bland. it’s a strikingly good looking wagon.

  • Mondeo is the least convincing “good” looker in class. Bland, slab sided and bulgy. Somehow the Kinetic got stationary in this translation. Mazda6 still look good for the same age. i40 is way better still.

  • Read carsales review of the Ecoboost Falcon, it seems to be a ripper of a car. I’m not sure if CarsGuide reviewed it or not, I can’t seem to find it.

  • This car should have the Falcon badge on it.
