Honda's psychedelic commercial has been judged the world's best car ad.

These have been judged the best car ads of the past 25 years.

The auto industry spends billions of dollars each year on TV ads, but few are worth remembering. In fact, there are many we'd rather forget.

Thankfully, at least one organization is keeping tabs on all those commercials, and during this year's Detroit Auto Show, it revealed its list of the ten best auto ads of the past 25 years.

The organization in question is called The One Club. According to its website, The One Club's mission is "to champion and promote excellence in advertising and design in all its forms.

It is the world's foremost non-profit organization devoted to elevating creative work in the industry. It seeks to celebrate the legacy of creative advertising and to use that legacy to inspire future generations. The One Club is the 'keeper of the flame' for advertising creatives."

To select its top ten ads, The One Club enlisted the aid of more than 70 ad executives and journalists. Among that number were very heavy-hitters from firms like Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, Leo Burnett Worldwide, and The Martin Agency.

When all the votes had been counted, Honda walked away with top honours for its psychedelic "Grrr" ad, touting Honda's i-CTDi diesel engine. (Fun fact: the ad is narrated by Garrison Keillor.) Honda also nabbed the #2 spot for its Rube-Goldberg-inspired ad promoting the Honda Accord (also voiced by Keillor).

Further down the list, Volkswagen scored three spots, Chrysler landed two (one for the Chrysler brand, one for Jeep), and BMW, Nissan, and Saturn each received one:

1. "Grrr" - Wieden+Kennedy/London and Honda - 2004
2. "Cog" - Wieden+Kennedy/London and Honda - 2003
3. "The Force" - Deutsch/Los Angeles and Volkswagen - 2011
4. "The Hire" - Fallon/Minneapolis and BMW - 2001*
5. "Sheet Metal" - Goodby, Silverstein & Partners/San Francisco and Saturn - 2002
6. "Born of Fire" - Wieden+Kennedy/Portland and Chrysler - 2011
7. "Toys" - TBWAChiatDay/Los Angeles and Nissan - 1997
8. "Lamp Post" - BMP DDB/London and Volkswagen - 1998
9. "Milky Way" - Arnold Worldwide/Boston and Volkswagen -1999
10. "Snow Covered" - Bozell Worldwide/Southfield and Chrysler/Jeep - 1994

Did voters overlook one of your favourites? We would have liked to see the Porsche 'Racing, not posing' ad on the list, and the Toyota 'Bugger' one. Did the list include one that you hated (we've never liked 'Grrr' -- which won). Feel free to sound off in the comments below.

  • No mention of the 1970's Leyland Australia mini "circus" TV ad? Had minis jumping through hoops to a catchy tune "mini, mini mini,"

  • No mention of the 1970's Leyland Australia "circus theme" mini TV advert? Still remember the catchy tune "mini, mini , mini"

  • RUBBISH! Best car ad ever was the Peugeot 206 commercial from India

  • I liked the ad for the BA Falcon. I think the music "Slow Jam" by New Order, and the editing of the clip really complemented each other. And you could see the guy who was driving the car was really having fun. That's when I fell in love with Falcon.

  • Cog 100% is the best car ad of all time by a long way. That Grrr ad was overproduced rubbish with annoying music - terrible. I prefer the Impossible Dream Honda advert over Grrr. As soon as I saw the title "top 10 car ads", I thought of that Cog ad immediately. In fact, it was so successful I bought a Euro...

  • What a yawn! Certainly wouldn't have me rushing out to buy a Honda or even look at them.

  • This is my most memorable one, where old mate is having a bbq with his friends and has a really girly voice and his friend rocks up in a ford courier and greets them with a really deep voice. Really surprised that is not on there! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLsRHvHSBBc&playnext=1&list=PL1EE72FD5916E485A&feature=results_video

  • Well, It sure as hell isn't the Hyundai "best effort" that preceded every video...

  • Toyota Country Border Patrol. It's not number 1, but it was 100% better than "Grrr"

  • I think the problem with bugger is that it's too catered to Australian and New Zealand tastes. The rest of the world wouldn't get it.

Michael of St Kilda Posted on 21 January 2013 5:42pm
  • "Honda - The Impossilbe Dream" has to be up there.

  • I have to say "The Cog" craps all over "Grr". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have to say we agree with you. Completely. - Ed

  • There was that excellent Rav4 ad where the couple was trying get rid of the other so they could have the car. And that great series of Golf GTI ads with Peter Stormare squashing tastless modified cars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ah yes. The RAV4 'Imagine Me and You (killing each other for the keys)'. good choice, and so is the GTI. - Ed.

Ollygt of Brisbane Posted on 18 January 2013 9:50pm
  • What, no MENTION of the "It's just like a Golf" advert? Boo

Paul of Wollongong Posted on 18 January 2013 6:24pm
  • I certainly couldn't watch that #1 a second time. Only watched it in its entirety the first time because I thought it had to get better - sadly, no.
