Women take to utes

Michelle Moore made a joint decision with her husband on their Holden SV6 ute based on looks, comfort and practicality.

Once the domain of males, the iconic Australian ute is fast becoming a "sexy" option for women.

A recent national survey has found four out of five people thought perceptions of women driving utes had completely changed. Just one in five still view the ute as a man's car.

Claire Tynan, boss of Mahindra Automotive Australia which conducted the survey, says people view the ute as an all-purpose family vehicle rather than just a workhorse. "In fact, some took their opinions further with 21.9 per cent saying women driving utes looked quite independent and sexy," he says. "Only a tiny 3.1 per cent thought negatively, saying they didn't think it was becoming."

When asked what women thought of having a ute as a family car, the survey found almost half would consider it, while one in five said they had one already.

Brisbane schoolteacher Michelle Moore said she and husband, Jeromy, made a joint decision on their Holden SV6 ute. "It was my main choice out of all the Holden cars," she says. "I think it was because it looks good and it's quite comfortable and also its practical - we can do trips to the dump, move furniture and also carry bikes in the back and with a plastic tray we don't have to worry too much about it being damaged as this can be replaced. Females these days are becoming more involved in handy man stuff around the house and find the need for a practical vehicle. Of course, though, it had to be black. My husband looks much more attractive in a black ute."

Wanda Lyon, of Tiaro, in Queensland, uses her Mahindra Pik-Up as part of her lifestyle. "I'm in a country area and there are more women driving utes in the country and some have them quite personalised," she says. "Most of it is a lifestyle choice, but even when we lived in Brisbane we had utes. I've got dogs and they can easily go in the back so you don't end up with hair in the car. You get a nice clean cabin and the dogs can go in the back. If you go camping you can sleep in the back because its so much easier."

Julie Hodgkinson, of Cloncurry, in Queensland, also uses her ute for her dogs and finds it easy to sleep in the back when she is attending weekend rodeos. "I started going to a lot of rodeos when I was younger and everyone had them," she says. "But I'm not real girly. I was always one of the blokes."

But don't tell beekeeper Kathryn Niklaus, of Beechworth, Victoria, that utes aren't for women. "Get real. That is the dark ages. Come on," she says. "The 4WD utes may be a little bit high for the average women, but they still are good for cargo space." She also reckons utes are "cool" as well as practical.

Colleen Rennie, of The Rock, NSW, says utes are not made only for men. "I've never had anyone challenge me on the male ute thing," she says. "Women should be able to drive anything they want. Utes don't just cater for men. I prefer them because I do a lot of travelling and I get everything I need in it."

Ms Tynan says their dealers are witnessing more women being involved in the purchasing process. "We have many female Pik-Up drivers who do a range of jobs, anything from farming to bird breeding, where space and durability is the key," she says. "Many of our male buyers also see their purchase very much as a joint decision, taking into account what their partners will appreciate."

Holden spokeswoman Emma Watts said they did not have any specific evidence showing whether women were buying utes in greater numbers. "Anecdotally, we understand that, over the past 10 years, there has been a marginal increase in the number of female ute purchasers," she said.

  • My fiance purchased a black VE SS Holden Ute in December. By January it was my daily drive. I love driving utes. I'll only go back to driving 'cars' when I have to put a baby seat in the back!

  • As long as you stop your stupid comments, I will leave you alone. All cars have their good and bad points, it's just you only focus on the bad, and if you need help go back and read all your comments. By the way fleet and government don't buy that many VE utes, that was the question. Maybe you should read the comments twice before you comment, that way when you respond to anyone you may then get it right. You made the comment about chicks driving utes are bogans, if you worked for HOLDEN then you would want everyone to drive one, then you said that you didn't like the drive, regardless of whether you like the car or not, it's not the right thing to do? Publicly bite the hand that feeds you! So that's why I don't think your telling the truth. Don't worry Wazza, I'll send him a box of Kleenex.

  • I take it that you (holden mad and shaun) don't like each others comments. Let's go and have a drink at the local... lol!

  • I never bagged out Holden, all i said is the Cruze engine is having problems, and like I said before, I don't know what the problem is, I've just seen it. I never bagged out Ferrari, I said they are an awesome car, I just dont see why we need so much power on our roads when all we can legally do is 100k/h. I wouldn't say I stick up for the Chinese cars, I just think we need to see what they can produce before we bag them out. I really don't care if you think I work for Holden or not... I have nothing to prove. If you take out the government/fleet orders for the VE then it won't be number 1 either. Really, who cares about gov/fleet orders? It just proves that that particular car suits the needs of many and that is why it's purchased. I will also appreciate if you no longer direct any comments to me, I'm not interested in anything else you have to say on any matter.

  • Well Shaun you should be sacked, bagging Holden the way you do. You still haven't answered the important question, WHAT was this so called problem. You have duck shoved around the issue without answering it. From the lack of answering the questions, you clearly don't know what it was otherwise you would have answered it by now. After reading your other blogs, you bag Holden and stick up for Chinese cars, you protect Toyota, you crap on the best cars ie Ferrari. You knew nothing of the Australian design team all over the world in GM plants. The only way you could of seen these engines pulled apart is at a dealership, so in saying you work for Holden you have once again proven to be full of crap. P.S. Take out the government orders and the VE ute is number 1. By the way, the Hilux isn't in the same category. BY the way it's 5 STAR, unlike the Hilux, so blind spots have to be there. The car must hold 5 x its weight on its roof to have 5 stars, for roll over protection (Lexus haha). You say the drive you didn't like, thank god you don't work for Wheels mag, they compared it to the BMW.

  • HM, I never mentioned Toyota, but why not mention Toyota... After all, they do make the #1 selling ute in Oz..... As a matter of fact, I have driven a VE sedan and ute. I was going to get a new SIDI SV6 but I didn't like the drive. It had too many blind spots and I wasn't too impressed with it (even though I'm able to get a hefty discount), and it's almost impossible to see out the rear window in a VE ute with a hard lid. It's amazing, you can sit there and have a go at me for thinking girls who drive utes are bogan (like I said, that's just my opinion... I certainly wouldn't not date a girl because of the car she drives) but take a look at yourself. If someone says something you disagree on straight away you label them an idiot, and act all high and mighty. It's funny you asked about my childhood, cause I was just thinking if you were repeatedly dropped on your head as a child. Oh and FYI... I noticed when you mention Holden you say 'we' so I gather you work for them. Guess what..... you're not the only one who works for Holden wink... How do you think i know about the Cruze engine failures?

  • Once again idiot, this is a ute argument not a Toyota one. We invented it, and I take it don't watch top gear. That comment was getting Wazza going. Do you need glasses, read the article before you open your mouth. You still didn't answer my argument about the bogan thing? I take it from your response that once again you have been put back in your box. You haven't even driven a SIDI or V8 VE ute have you? I do every day, along with other models. Let's base your comments on fact not crap. Once again you keep calling me your mate, bogans talk like that. MMAAATTEE mate mmaatee mate. Have I finally hit the nail on the head, and you have the balls to sit here and have a crack at girls for driving utes???????? Is it me or are you the most contradictive person on the planet. You sound like one of those guy's that drives a 1999 Camry, that reads articles and then you think you know everything. Then come in to a dealership purely to waste the time of the salesman, and have a crack at the cars. Every site you start something, where you not hugged as a child and this is the only way you get a feeling of self worth? Or do you still live with you mother? HOLDEN V FORD not crapota

Holden mad of Brighton Vic Posted on 21 April 2010 4:05pm
  • Reserved for Holden Vs Ford? sorry i missed that memo. Mate this is a car site...... cars are from all over the world... if you cant accept that then maybe you need to find your self a new place to lurk. And best ute in the planet well thats your opinion... I just realised if you have that mind set of this site being for Ford v Holden only then your obviously a prepubescent teen.... grow up. There are many other cars in the world, that are just good or even better than a Holden/Ford.

    shaun Posted on 21 April 2010 1:53pm
  • Whats wrong with a hot girl driving the best ute on the planet (thats for you wazza). Shaun stick to your chines cars and get out of this site, this site is reserved for holden V ford only. Not idiots like you. you say girl in ute = bogan, then you use the word chick, now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the word a bogan would use??????????? Nothing wrong with it girls, drive what ever you like.

Holden mad of Brighton Vic Posted on 21 April 2010 11:16am
  • Girls in utes = bogan for me. I've always liked chicks who can drive manual.

    shaun Posted on 21 April 2010 9:31am
  • Kaygas, who cares what car they are driving, as long as she good looker, there should'nt be a problem. By the way i think she'd look even hotter in a black falcon ute...haha

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 20 April 2010 8:21pm
  • I agree. A hot girl in a new black V8 holden ute is the pinnacle of hotness. Girls in front wheel Corollas and Hyundais etc, you would not even bother looking at them. And I for one would never date a girl that owned those types of cars since they have little respect for what they drive.
