And can they draw it for a global children’s competition?

Toyota’s Dream Car Art Contest offers kids around the world the opportunity to explore their imagination and design the car of their dreams.

Children aged up to 15 can submit a drawing of their dream car for competition, with three finalists from each country going on to the global competition.

Last year’s world winners included a Reticule Car that folded up to handbag size, which was drawn by seven-year-old Szonja Kata Szollosi from Hungary.

“This practical small car is actually a handy bag, which will become any time a normal size car by a remote control. Always with his owner, no need to find parking place, should not be afraid to lose and even possible to sleep with it,” Szonja said.

Then there was the clever Automatic Noodle Truck with a conveyer belt that brings the noodles to your table, sketched by 11-year-old Porndanai Wattanapraditchai of Thailand.

“My family has a small noodle shop and all family members are a part of this family business. There was one day when my grandpa got really sick and sales that day wasn’t good. So, I figured it would be good to have a car that can help facilitate selling noodle and my grandpa could rest,” Porndanai said.

Also from Thailand, 13-year-old Pipat Tunkrathok drew the World Saver Car which chews up dirty air and then cleans it.

“The power source of this car is any kind of pollution. The car transforms the pollution into clean air that help nourish the trees to make a wonderful green world,” Pipat said.

It’s a great way to keep your kids occupied over the holidays, and their entries can be in any kind of artistic materials: paint, coloured markers, crayons, chalk and more.

The competition closes on February 29-2012, and runs in two stages: The Australian competition will choose five winners from each of three age categories, and each of the 15 will win a $200 Dick Smith voucher.

In the global competition, all 15 Australian winners will have their artwork submitted into the “World Contest” for their chance to win a trip to the awards ceremony in Japan in August 2012

  • Speaking of Kids, here's their take on our two cars, a Volvo XC90 and a Kia Grand Carnival EX. To them the KIA is the luxury car as it has the comfortable cloth seats (vs hot and cold leather in the Volvo), it has walk through convenience between rows 2 and 3 with the 2nd row middle seat removed (Volvo is via folding 2nd row which is inconvenient as we have fixed boosters in both of those), it has sliding side doors (yep the kids think they're superior to the swing-out doors), it has opening windows in the 3rd row (the Volvo like most other SUV's has fixed 3rd row side windows), and finally it fits bikes and kayaks conveniently inside the vehicle when we go to the park or river (err no chance of fitting this stuff inside an SUV). So there it is, luxury from a kids perspective. Everytime I mention selling the KIA, they protest and demand we sell the Volvo. In all seriousness, I reckon this Kia will live long in this family, even if it becomes a 3rd car for us. Right now luxury car manufacturers will be glad that kids don't make the purchase decisions.
