VW ute may top sales here

image VW's Amarok ute will reach Australia during the second half of 2010.

An Argentine-built one-tonne pickup could take the point next year as Volkswagen continues its sales drive into Australia.

The all-new Amarok has the potential to out-sell the Golf down under as the German brand decides to get serious about ending the global domination of Japanese utes led by the Toyota HiLux.

Volkswagen's first ute has been designed in Europe but was always planned for a worldwide sales push with production set for a low-cost base outside Buenos Aires in Argentina.

"How important is the Amarok? It's very important," says Karl Gehling, spokesman for Volkswagen Group Australia.

"The size of the pickup market in Australia is very big and it's a great opportunity to expand into a new segment."

The Amarok - its name means wolf in the Inuit language used in Canada and Greenland - will reach Australia in the second half of next year as left-hand drive production begins around March 2010 with right- drive utes to follow later.

"We will be one of the first to get it. The roll-out starts with South American, then Russia and Europe, then Africa and Australia," says Gehling.

"There will be a double-cab and a single-cab version. The single cab will be a cab-chassis and it won't have an integrated tray."

The Amarok will have two turbodiesel engines, the lower-powered being a 90kW/340Nm 2.0-litre and the higher a 120kW/400Nm common-rail injected 2.0-litre.

Volkswagen is confident the Amarok will sell well in Australia and has the potential to trump the Golf in showrooms.

"It certainly does. But it's all about potential. It will be a mainstream model for us," Gehling says.

"What makes it very interesting is that it is the first European pickup to compete in that market and it will bring Volkswagen's strengths to the market. Watch out."

  • I think they are from VW motorsport and they are an option however, they are not listed in the Amarok brochere.

  • A nice vehicle but at a ripoff price, like all Australian models. A simple check with USA products, some slightly different, but essentially the same show a price difference of approx $10,000 and factor in the exchange rate........... The importers will make all sorts of BS statements as to why the difference. The reality is Australia is a cash cow to be milked.Roll on mega profits.

  • I too am keen to wait to see how the Amarok performs on the road (don't care so much about how many they sell). I have heard they are quiet inside and this is one of the things I love about my transporter. I am sick to death of mechanics telling me to buy a toyota simply because that's one of few makes they have tools to work on. Their logic is shrouded in making their life easier on the three occasions a year they work on my vehicle but they care nothing about the other 362 days i need to run hard and spend hours on the phone while driving. i have to live through sydney's blasted traffic but i don't want to hear it. Here's hoping the germans can put the disasters of the T5 behind them and inflate some long needed confidence and prestigiousness back into the VW brand and reputation. Here's to a better year for VW ... can't believe it's already march !! Best Regards, Steve K Builder.

  • I have an LT35 van and have been looking for a ute but I think the towing capabilities will let it down but it is a good looking vehicle ,we will certainly have a test drive but still there is no mention of price on any website !!!

  • I like this ute very much as I was about to search for others but once discovered it's coming to Australia I am willing to wait and hoping price wise that it will not be too expensive, already owed 2 vw caddy's in the past.
