VW Golf gets new style

Ask just about anyone what the most popular Volkswagen is...

...and the answer will probably be the original Beetle, closely followed by the Golf.

Both cars have a long history and while the Beetle’s stretches back to World War II, some people might be surprised to hear that the Golf has been around for 35 years.

Since its launch, more than 26 million have been sold and the sixth-generation Golf will be introduced this year.

VW is showing off three Golf models. The popular hatch follows an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary design theme. However, the design is fresh and the interior quality improved.

The Robust ute, fresh from the Hanover Commercial Vehicle Show in Germany, is also making its local debut.

The Robust on display sports chunky tyres for off-road work, a winch, emergency search and rescue lights and a purpose-built load bay that has rescue recovery gear.

The four-door Robust is clearly designed for the North American market but VW believes it will be just as popular here.
