VW Amarok rugged and tough

The VW Amarok?s advanced TDI engines will set new standards for fuel economy and emissions.

Amarok will go on sale here in the first half of next year, boasting exceptional fuel efficiency and rugged looks.

The Amarok’s advanced TDI engines will set new standards for fuel economy and emissions. Its safety systems and convenience features either meet of exceed those of passenger cars. Many of these technologies are being implemented for the first time in the mid-size ute segment.

They include twin turbochargers for the range-topping 120kW TDI engine and an optional permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive system with Torsen differential. For space, load area width and height, cargo loading ability and payload capacity, the new Amarok is best in class.

The Amarok kicks off as a dual cab with impressive space for five adults. Exceptional interior dimensions make it the most spacious ute in its class. Easy entry, a generous seating layout and lots of headroom characterise the interior. When only two people are aboard, the fold-up rear seat and folding backrest increase interior cargo space.

The load area of the Amarok dual cab serves up the largest dimensions in its class. At 1555mm long by 1620mm wide, it yields an impressive load area of 2.52m2. Also best in class is the ute’s maximum load width of 1222mm between wheel wells. For the first time on a mid-size ute it is possible to load Euro pallets (measuring 1.2 x 0.8m) sideways, saving space. It is easy to transport recreational equipment including quad bikes, or bulky machinery. Payload capacity? A hefty 1.0 metric tonne. Four lashing eyes at the corners of the load area help to secure cargo during the drive.

The Amarok’s safety package is comprehensive, including driver and front passenger airbags, plus head and thorax airbags – still rare in this segment. Also included are height-adjustable head restraints and three-point safety belts at all seating positions.

A high level of active safety is also on offer. ESP is standard. On all ‘trailer-ready’ versions the ESP functionality includes a trailer stabilisation system. Another feature contributing to safety is “Off-Road Mode” – activated by the press of a button – which is enabled up to a vehicle speed of 100km/h. Here, the ESP system plus the Electronic Differential Lock, Anti-Slip Regulation system and ABS are all re-tuned for challenging off-road conditions.
