The dual-cab is about to match an eight-speed automatic with the new 132kW/420Nm turbodiesel.

A workmate body and two new engines are expanding the Volkswagen Amarok’s base model.

The dual-cab range will be joined by a $29,990 cab-chassis option, which Volkswagen says will give more scope to adapt the Amarok in specialised use for fleets and farms.

The entry-level two-wheel drive takes the fuel miser level down to 7.4L/100 with the TDI340, a 2.0-litre turbodiesel developing 103kW of power at 3750rpm and 340Nm of torque between 1750-2250rpm.

The petrol addition is the 2.0-litre TSI300 - $30,590 in dual-cab version - which develops 118kW of power at 3750rpm and 300 Nm of torque from a low 1600rpm, with fuel economy claimed at 9.6L/100 km on the combined cycle.

Both engines are mated only to a six-speed manual transmission. But there’s good news for auto fans further up the range. The dual-cab is about to match an eight-speed automatic with the new 132kW/420Nm turbodiesel with 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system.

Inside the cabin, the feature list has grown to include daytime running lights standard across the range, a multifunction steering wheel as an option on base model and Trendline and standard on Highline and Ultimate models – with the latter also getting heated seats.

  • I'm guessing Greg of Makay has never driven an Amarok???? The thought of a 2 L engine may sound terrible but at least it is responsive, ecconomical, has two turbo's and thrashes the Hilux. To Ron N of Perth how many problems do you know of with the Amarok??????? It's been in Europe for close to 3 years and the hard fact is they were rated there as the most relliable ute last year!!!! A lot to think about.

  • So long as its a pissy little 2.0L I'm not interested, , a twin turbo 3.0L however, know theres a happy little motor, should easily get that wonderful 500+nm of torque, yes please.....

  • I'll believe that these things are a work vehicles when I see them appearing on farms and mines in serious numbers. Meantimes, they just look like a suburban shopping trolley to me. A mate has a Golf and summed VW's up nicely - "They're just not built to last". I wonder who's going to buy a 6 or 8 yr old Amorok with 180,000 k's on the clock, with all its attendant increasing technical problems, hideously expensive parts, and the need to take them to specialist service centres?

  • James, the V8 fuel guzzlers, such as the XR8 and GT make 500+ Nm of torque (the GT makes 570Nm). Still 420 from a smaller capacity diesel is impressive, but try sticking to facts.

  • with a 132 Kw 430Nm diesel makes one wonder what sane person could want a petrol engine, even a v8 fuel guzzler is not in that torque league. Still I suppose thewre are some strange people out there.

  • Lawman, curtain airbags do not make a vehicle safer body stucture and impact dispersion do, the most common injuries from a side impact are from the B-Pillar, the Amarok has side airbags to assist in occupant protection, those side airbags are standard on all Amaroks, unlike Hilux , Ranger , BT-50 where they are options on all but the upper specced vehicles, Amarok has a 5 Star ANCAP safety raing accross the whole range, while every other manufacturer has 2-4 star, with the Ranger/BT-50 only having it on selected models. Amarok is safer and has a higher rating than a Hilux or Navara with curtain airbags.

  • Hoping the 132kW/420Nm motor gets into the passenger car range! I also wish 4Motion would appear in the lesser specs as well,as it does in many overseas markets, though I doubt it will happen.

  • Why are there no curtain airbags (including rear seat)? Worksafe requires one to provide a safe working environment for employees and I would not buy one and put my family in one until available.

  • Slowly getting the variety, but not the one I would like. That's a petrol auto but not DSG, 2 door style side plus canopy. Just the cheapest, most baisic model. It would make a nice delivery van. These VWs look good, will be interesting to see if we get more versions.
