...former racer and James Bond stunt driver Ben Collins.

The true identity of the character was revealed at the weekend after The Telegraph of London broke with convention and outed Collins.

"We never comment on speculation as to who or what the Stig is,” a Top Gear spokesman told the paper.

The mystery began to unravel after a report that The Stig had revealed his identity to printers who were working on promotional photographs for him.

Photographer Simon Whitehead told The Bristol Evening Post was shocked when the customer made the revelation.

"I was absolutely amazed when he said he was The Stig, it was quite a big thing in a weird way," he said.

"I suppose he had to tell us because he was planning to work with us in the future and had to get it out of the way."

Despite Mr Whitehead refusing to name him it gave the British press enough information to confirm Collins as The Stig.

An accident report into presenter Richard Hammond's crash in September 2006 recorded that Collins had "worked closely with Top Gear as a high performance driver and consultant".

The Stig had also been heard speaking in a Bristol accent and Collins has the driving credentials to qualify for the job.

He began his motor sport career in 1994 and has raced at Le Mans and in NASCAR, Formula Three and in GT.

He has also worked as Daniel Craig's stunt driver in Quantum of Solace and he was in the army for four years.

Earlier this month, News of the World reported The Stig lived in a $650,000 home with his wife and once had a shot as a Formula 1 driver.

And what may shock fans of the British car show most is that this star doesn’t get around in a Ferrari or Maserati. He drives a reasonably priced, $32,000 car.

  • This is NOT good reporting. This is total stupidity. As always, you have provided too much unimportant information. We all loved the Mystique behind The Stig. These guys have such a great show, you are probably jealous of their success, including the Stigs. You should NOW crawl back into your hole and stay there.

  • I would have rathered not know who he is, its part of who The Stig is.

    Brenden Posted on 29 January 2009 9:14pm
  • I believethat who ever blew The Stig's cover should be 'hung drawn and quartered' not because of any national secrets issue but brcause it has destroyed the mystique of having "The Stig" on the show and removed some of the show's enjoyment for me at least!

  • The Stig.....We Colonials will still watch with bated breath at this guy....it could have been Lord Lucan as far as we are concerned...the guy can drive! The whole Pommy team should come to Aus to lift our own boys up a gear...great concept of show..we all love our cars..but have a guest series of two or three shows here in Aus...Baz Luhrman stuffed up ...you guys would not...in fact a Ute expose' would give the world an insight into how some of us live in the bush...and how hard some of our home grown vehicles can go. What is that phrase ..as much fun as can be had with your pants on..... Best Regards to the Stig!

  • What a low act. Why can't people just leave some things alone. Who gives a damn who the stig is? Just enjoy the antics and the driving.

  • Garry, you have no sense of fun do you? Does it matter what car he drives, he does what he wants, and he obviously likes his job, or he'd have quit. id like to see YOU up on any TV show driving fast cars.

TOP GEAR zomg Posted on 26 January 2009 6:46pm
  • Put this on top of your "who gives a shite list". The Stig is a failed pommy race car driver. If he was any good he would be racing for a living and not being a sad prat on TV.

Garry Fitzgerald Posted on 23 January 2009 12:38am
  • This is wonderful, We can finally know now he IS A HUMAN!

Lex Luthor of Sydney Posted on 22 January 2009 7:48pm
  • All of you are perthetic. You don't treat all the Topgears fairly, I do. What he did in the last 2 Bond film was his job, that what he was paid for. I reckon the offically topgear should be taken off SBS. See in DVD or PayTV in BBCWORLD. I writing this to teach you all a lesson.

  • I agree with you Tony The Stig/Ben Collins should stand up and take a bow for all the fantastic driving he has done.

Tim of South Australia Posted on 22 January 2009 4:52pm
  • Good driver for all the hype. However I am with Evan Williams. Wouldn't know him from another bar of soap. Does it really matter?

Stewart Beveridge of Alex Hills Oz Posted on 22 January 2009 3:14pm
  • Regardless - The Stig is a legend, and although this has stopped "the myth" of The Stig, I think Ben can now stand up and take a bow for all the excellent driving he's done over the last few series.

Tony of Sydney Posted on 21 January 2009 11:13pm
  • Come on Ella... you can admit it now he was your fantasy man, wasn't he? He was your white knight in shining leather (and helmet) hehe. I do think the headline should have given you a clue 'Top Gear Stig unmasked' mmm. I have to say on a serious note the UK Top Gear is brilliant, the Aussie one sucked big time... I watched the first one... (thought maybe it because its the first one), watched the third one... NO not good. I think their problem was they tried to copy the UK one as closely as possible, never a good idea.

Robert of Brisbane Posted on 21 January 2009 9:46pm
  • Realy who cares if you know who the Stig is. It is probably one of a very few shows worth watching. And David the video works for me. Better still buy a ticket, jump on a plane and see it live, we have a heap of people meeting from all over Aussie.

Chris of Ocean Grove Posted on 21 January 2009 7:30pm
  • Ella - didn't the headline give you a clue - 'Top Gear Stig unmasked'. Why did you read it if you did not want to know who he is???

    Tone Posted on 21 January 2009 4:48pm
  • I am shocked that the STIG has been unmasked I always thought that Collins was the STIG as per Richard Hammonds crash report

Ian Johnston of Darwin Posted on 21 January 2009 4:02pm
  • Personally I am a fan of the UK Top Gear Show, OK already stop laughing. No, really, Jeremy and the crew do a good job. But, now there's no more mystery, no more intrigue, the world will never be the same again................. I didn't even bother typing any remarks about the Aussie TG effort, yuk, poo, horrible. Hang on I just did, lol

Deejay51 of Gold Coast Posted on 21 January 2009 3:27pm
  • But wasn't The Stig booked for speeding in a race to Scotland in a Caterham or something similar quite a while ago. So "out there" are people not associated with TG who know.

David Wryell of Australia Posted on 21 January 2009 2:33pm
  • until The Stig takes the helmet off, i don't know what to believe. if the TG producers wanted attention off The Stig, this is the best way. considering the first was supposedly Colin McRae, and Alistair was rumored to take Colin's spot.

Anthony blyth of Merrylands, NSW Posted on 21 January 2009 2:21pm
  • hello I have just been reading the article on top gear "the stig revealed" and tryed to click on the "Watch Top Gear Live free online" link and it came up with an error or something simelar any chance that this could be fixed? David

David Pywell of geelong Posted on 21 January 2009 1:32pm
  • I wouldn't know who Ben Collins is if I fell over him, so I'm none the wiser. Probably a zillion or so others who'll agree with me. Apart from being a short-arse and the fact he has superb control of motor-cars in most situations, I wouldn't know him from a bar-of-soap.. How about a photo?

Evan Williams of Sunshine Coast, QLD Posted on 21 January 2009 1:17pm
  • I wonder how they'll kill him off on the show.

    Darren Posted on 21 January 2009 12:59pm
  • It makes you wonder if they'll kill off the White Stig now also. Lets hope its as spectacular as the Black Stigs "death" if they do so.

Nathan of Newcastle, Australia Posted on 21 January 2009 12:21pm
  • Maybe he wanted out, or TG wanted some more sensationalism and a new driver! Will we ever know the truth?

Chris Moore of Sydney Posted on 21 January 2009 11:59am
  • Wow, its great to finally be able to put a name to that helmet. LoL. Sounds like a cool guy. Being a car racer and tv show celebrity, you don't need to be driving a ferrari or any of the exotic car.

    Jason Posted on 21 January 2009 11:47am
  • Some say he is Ben Collins others say he is Nigel Mansell Some even Boast "They are He" .........All we know is....He's called "The Stig"

Paul of Merimbula Posted on 21 January 2009 11:39am
  • And just what is his reasonably priced, $32,000 car?

Matt of Newcastle Posted on 21 January 2009 11:18am
  • Now I'm devistated, I didn't want to know who he was in real life..... this has article has dispelled the myth that was "The Stig". It was fun not to know. Why is it that we can't have our Unnamed Masked heroes? Someone always has to spoil the mystique.

Ella McGinnis Posted on 21 January 2009 11:05am
  • I am the STIG

jon loughron of melbourne Posted on 21 January 2009 11:00am
  • So what you're saying is that Ben Collins is actually a superhuman and possibly part cyborg creature that drinks used oil straight from the sump of high performance vehicles. No wonder he didn't get a drive in F1. The other mortal drivers would've complained that his superhuman/cyborg abilities gave him an unfair advantage. raspberry

Dan Bamford of Canberra, Australia Posted on 21 January 2009 10:46am
  • If it is found that he revealed himself to someone then as part of his contract he will be fired like the last Stig Perry McCarthy.

    MisterTwo Posted on 21 January 2009 10:42am
  • I could had known. How dare he wreck those Aston Martin DBS in the last 2 Bond movies.

    Carlover Posted on 20 January 2009 6:37pm
  • I have no problem that Ben is the Stig. Much respect to a guy who has gone through a hell of a lot on the show in full race gear much to our entertainment! And he is a great drive to boot!
