Smooth operator: the Subaru STi Impreza has new levels of comfort.

Go-fast is out and a more subdued and sophisticated look is in for Subaru's latest hot hatch, the STi Impreza.

This is despite new STi's ability to sprint to 100km/h in about 5.0 seconds, a little quicker than its predecessor.

The new model, unveiled in Launceston today, is priced at $59,990 for the WRX STi and $64,990 for the WRX STi spec. R.

Output from the 2.5-litre, single-scroll, turbocharged engine has increased from 205kW to 221kW and from 392Nm of torque to 407Nm.

Styling is more savvy, subtle and cleaner looking.

The body is taller, wider and sits on a longer wheelbase and a more refined suspension.

The trademark bonnet scoop is now integrated into the bonnet and the over-sized rear wing has been trimmed to a neat roof-lip spoiler.

It has fatter wheel arches covering wider wheels and a 55mm increase in track.

Stability control is standard and it sits on 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and Bridgestone tyres.

The spec. R adds 18-spoke BBS wheels and leather Recaro front seats.

The brakes remain Brembo, with four-pot calipers at the front and two-pot calipers at the rear.

Weight is up just 10kg to 1480kg.

Subaru's managing director, Nick Senior, said the STi had retained its exceptional performance credentials yet gained a new level of comfort and refinement.

“No longer will drivers have to sacrifice comfort for the sake of performance,” he said.
