Micro-size digital cameras have become a nightmare for car companies.

Hastily taken, grainy snaps of future models tend to pop up everywhere, as Nissan found out last week.

A quick-thinking person at a dealer convention in the Middle East fired off a few shots of the next-generation Patrol off-roader, which is not due out until next year.

As the photo shows, the big wagon borrows cues from the Terranaut concept show wagon with its upswept rear window and less boxy look.

The Murano-like front is sleek and the Patrol pays a passing complement to the Land Rover Sport with its mudguard air vents.

The Patrol is expected to carry over its body-on-frame construction with new more powerful engines and transmissions.

There is likely to be arange-topping 5.6-litre V8 with a seven-speed gearbox, as well as a V6 petrol and a 3.0-litre V6 dCi turbo-diesel powerplant shared with Renault, Nissan's partner.

  • Is this new model Nissan V8 coming out in the utes? I hope so. I'm not going to buy the new 4 cylinder peace of sh*t.

  • What happened Nissan? I WAS looking foward to seeing this car. All I can say is the ute better look a hell of a lot better.

  • As the years go on the shape gets more modern like everything else but just the thought of the 5.6 V8 gets me excited. Can't wait to throw a locker in, dump pipe, muddies and lift and see what it can do

  • This model doesn't even look like serious 4X4 its supposed to be! It looks like many of those pussy city cars which makes people think they look good in it, ha! 4WD = Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series.

  • Good bye (REAL)four weeldrive ... thank God Toyota a least gives us the option of the 70 Series

  • Nissan have had some terrible engines, except the 4.2 diesel. Add a turbo and they get going! ZD30 diesel, and the 2.8, what a joke, every motor has come out of the spare parts bin. Europe has had the best in engines while we get what other countries don't want, we have been the dumping ground for engines. eg V6 petrol in most 4x4's. I don't think nissan will give us anything much this time. If they do, I would like to see the V8 turbo diesel installed.

  • looks ok hope the engines are better than the problem prone zd30s cant wait to see

  • I've got a Toyota 2007 GXL V8 petrol and will "Seriously consider for the first time, a V8 Patrol".It sounds like it will have great power and providing they put a decent size fuel tank in it for Australian outback travel i think they will have a winner.

  • its about time they made a new model because i need to up date my patrol .i know a lot of guys who have been holding off so they can trade their patrol for the new model. why would any one go out and buy the same ute with a couple of little updates.if the new patrol didnt come out soon i was thinking of trading for the all new landcruser.

  • Were they aiming for 'ugly' when they drew the first picture of the new patrol? What the hell are you doing Nissan! I wonder what Nissan's corporate buzz word is for their new design 'direction' - Hideous? I at least hope Australian Patrols look a little more rugged and less chintzy. I had better buy a patrol now, while they are still tough looking, ruggedly designed and functional.

  • well the 5.6 v8 is meant to be more economical than the current woeful 6 that dates from a bed ford truck and i read its fuel economy is 25l/100 city 18l/100 highway i think ir is like 8mpg city and 12 mpg highway. The Armada is 16mpg city 22mpg highway i think in the patrol the 5.6 would be like 18mpg city and 25mpg highway which is like 18l/100 city and 12/100 highway so much better than the old 4.8il6 my father said that engine dates from a 1940s bedford or a 1960s bedford truck so it is ready to be put to death and much better engines are now coming out The new 3.0V6 diesel is a high reving engine and will be hell of alot better than the 4 cylinder engine which is an old Navarra engine just with a common rail unit on it. sooner this patrol is put to death the better Nissan should do a new ute too. i did read may be a 4.0V6 in the patrol if Nissan had any sense ide design a 4.0V8 diesel with 700nm and 220 KW power and Nissan has a hightech V8 5.0V8 used in some Infinity in USA and has 380bhp this is the engine we need for the patrol a dealer said to me is that the old body will still stay and they might put a new engine in it and may be a new 6 speed manual but this is not gospel and the new body will only be in T.I model

michael jenkinson Posted on 31 January 2009 10:27pm
  • The appeal of the Patrol has always been its very strong driveline and live axle front, but its great weakness has been the grandfathers axe 4.2 diesel and the useless 3.0 four. This new one seems a bit too 'plasticy', the 3.0 V6 diesel won't cut it, and I fear they will also have an independent front. We'll see.

Russell Fisch of Melbourne Posted on 15 January 2009 12:25pm
  • Looks too much like the old Patrol to me, but then what else can a big 4WD wagon look like? They are all ugly lumps.

Jason Scott of Sydney Posted on 11 January 2009 7:59pm
  • Is there a 2 Door version ? What is the Engine size? Will it have Tiptronic gears? Thanks Ranjit

Ranjit Chaudhuri of Dubai Posted on 11 January 2009 5:18am
  • it is like LC200. looks should be more aggressive, but its cool. hope this time nissan will bring some more power to their engines as its competitor is land cruiser. do something nissan.

    Haris Posted on 10 January 2009 9:51am
  • Looks good! About time Nissan came out with a new motor and auto transmission! The curvy look is contemporary and it should not age too badly. The only thing that looks crook are the chromed air vents on the front fenders. Bring it on, I say!!

Lawrance Lee of Melbourne, VIC Posted on 07 January 2009 11:17am
  • 200s with Nissan badge, more plastic to be left on the cape roads, if u dare take it there, never quality from nissan

Simon V of Cairns Posted on 05 January 2009 10:31pm
  • The 5.6 V8 is already being used in the US. It's a petrol ~ 240kW/520Nm. Def looks like the 200 Cruiser

    maya Posted on 02 January 2009 12:46am
  • Another typically bland example of Japanese engineering... Looks like an over inflated X-Trail, Ugly profiling on D pillar and nose. Swept front means extensive use of plastic and will look "odd" with a Bullbar. Yet another 4wd maker pandering to the Soccer Mums and making an Icon go soft!!!!

    Tombie Posted on 01 January 2009 9:05pm
  • Why cant we be patient and wait for an official and confirmed launch from Nissan Auatralia. Its all great to see what might come out and until its confirmed by Nissan Australia all it is is a potential or possibility?

TC of WA Posted on 30 December 2008 11:15am
  • I think its a fresh new look ,about time Nissan updated the shape of the patrol to keep up with Landcruiser I give it full marks

Robert Geeves Posted on 29 December 2008 1:41am
  • Is the "5.6 litre V8" petrol or diesel? If it's petrol it'll be a terrible gas-guzzler and therefore no use off-road; but if it's diesel then bring it on because the 3.0 V6 won't have nearly enough low-rpm torque. And does the new model retain the GU's all-live-axle suspension? If it's IFS and/or IRS, then RIP Patrol as an off-roader.

  • Well i love it sooner the better it si released then i can buy one. it is now finally a threat to the current landcruiser. the current patrol has old woeful engines. the 4.8il6 block came from an old bedford truck and this little gutless wonder 4 cylinder diesel. Good this is the last year of the current patrol. i love what i see and i hope it can give land cruiser and disco 3 some good competition

stephen boyce of queensland Posted on 27 December 2008 6:25pm
  • Looks like a landcruiser and a rav 4 have been messing around grin

    shane W Posted on 23 December 2008 11:00pm
  • it going the way of the cruiser lossing the tough look and going soft

    davo Posted on 23 December 2008 1:07pm
  • I offer the following comments; Hooked D pillar bad. V6 diesel engine good. And no Cars Guide the front is not Murano like, thank god.
