Shane Warne to co-host Top Gear

Australia's spin king Shane Warne will be revving up our TV screens as the host of a new series of Top Gear.

Warne, whose stable of luxury cars includes a head-turning black Lamborghini Superleggera, is set to front a new series with Jeremy Clarkson. He is believed to be hosting six episodes of the popular motoring show, the Herald Sun reports.

In a TV coup Channel Nine is believed to have snared the rights to the motoring franchise from SBS.

Nine and SBS were both believed to have been in discussions with BBC Worldwide, which owns the rights to the motoring show fronted by Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. First-run episodes of Top Gear regularly top one million viewers on SBS.

Nine has confirmed that it has held discussions with Warne to host Top Gear Australia. No formal agreement has yet been signed, but he is their pick to host the series. A Nine source says an agreement is likely to be completed within days.

Channel Nine would not confirm any plans for Top Gear. No deal has been signed, however a Nine source said an agreement was likely to be completed within days. Nine CEO David Gyngell has been chasing the rights to Top Gear for eight months and recently spent time in London to lock down a deal.

The role would mark the first TV presenting gig for Warne - who has previously worked in cricket commentating roles. Warne would be well suited to the hosting gig with his passion for luxury cars well documented. Warne's collection of luxury cars started in 1996 when he bought a Ferrari 355 Spider. He has since bought another Ferrari - a 360 Spider in titanium - two Mercedes four-wheel-drives, two BMWs, and a Holden VK Commodore. and last year's Lamborghini purchase.

But it hasn't all been smooth sailing for Warne, who made headlines last year when he crashed his Mercedes into a tram.

The Aussie version has had two seasons on SBS, fronted by Steve Pizzati, Warren Brown and this year joined by James Morrison.

  • Why can we manage to put up the worst of Australian culture up on the screen and reward them with high paying gigs for their bad behaviour, attitudes and their incesant need to be a tool. The guy can not drive. Just because you have a stable of high end cars does not mean you can drive them case in point the Bugatti Veyron that ended up in a man made golf course lake in the United States. The guy openly and publicly admitted that reading was a waste of time. I am surprised he can read the scripts let alone the texts he gets. I would like to congratuate the producers of the program for putting another illeterate BOGAN on TV.

  • BBC and SBS were capable of being independent. I love top gear but I won't even bother once nine hacks it down to a 32 minute show, with 28 mins of Toyota trying to associate itself with enjoyable motoring via paid advertising. Commercial networks can only cater to people unable to think or read. There is "Drive it" from Germany on TVS Sydney, it is an independent show that is more informative than top gear was but it is completely serious with none of the top gear humour. Go Warnie! you must be doing something right to cause so many sour grapes. Thanks Top Gear it was fun.

  • SBS finally got it right last season, and now Ch 9 wnt to turn it into a turd! Owning a vk commode should disqualify anyone from co/hosting a motoring show!! Why not have Skaifey? This guy knows how to drive, and he knows how to get the message across so that even the dumbest person can understand what's going on. Warne? he'd be too busy texting.....

  • Shane Warne great as a Cricketer and commentator on that game. PLEASE will the decision makers realise any Aussie take on the UK Top Gear Package should have always had a knowledgeable Motoring Personality as the anchor man (my choice Wil Hagon), Interviewers of Motorsport Stars (has to be John Smailes), and what would be so wrong having the likes of Skaifey, Crompo etc as guest Drivers and Evaluators of vehicles and accessory items, these guys know how to drive and explain technical issues to a Television audience. I do agree with bringing in J Clarkson esq. to add clout in the early episodes, this was always necessary to link the programs. I simply do not understand the logic of handing the reigns to Sports Personalities totally unrelated to Motoring, its history in this country and with respect an unknown in the Motoring and Motorsports arena.

  • Not a clever idea

  • I don't really care. All of the Topgear shows are insult to all car fans. There should be something better for can fans

  • Nothing can beat the UK Top Gear, the Australian version is a badly ripped of attempted. Doesn't matter who you get to host the Australian top gear the UK one will always out shine it.

  • Keep Top Gear as it is. It's those guys who make it what it is. As stated by John, leave warne out warnie. Trying to copy a winning formula never works.

  • warne on top gear.a great way to lose viewers.i did enjoy the show too.you have lost me now.warne is trailer trash

  • Glad to see Mr Warne now has a job that may keep him busy enough to leave the SMSs alone. I on the other hand now have 1 less program to watch as I cant stand the jabbering monkey!

  • Shane Warne will be a lot better than those guys from Sydney, what a disaster that was, Shane has talent, and is a good cricket commentator, I might get back to watching the next series, so long as Channel 9. dont kill it with too many Ads.

samm of Melbourne Posted on 25 October 2009 8:58am
  • please we are Warne out with Warnei, do everyone a favour and leave top gear alone

    john Posted on 24 October 2009 9:39pm
  • Clarkson will be working all year then I guess! It takes almost all year for the UK show to produce their current series and add to that the travel time, and production time in Australia + show time... I dont see how it will work.

Tatyana Levido of Sydney Posted on 23 October 2009 9:43am
  • Methinks they're messing with it too much. Pizza box, Wazza and Jim were just starting to get into the groove of things and it was getting better. Another host change will break it.

  • Wow !!! Yet another reason NOT to watch this show !

    Michael Posted on 22 October 2009 2:01pm
  • warney can teach me to drive and i'll teach him how to bowl

    Administrator Posted on 22 October 2009 10:55am
  • Im sorry... this is just another reason for the program to fail. If you limit TopGear Australia to yobbo's/former Cricket stars, your going to limit your Inteligent watchers, and generally the ones who can afford the cars you are showing. Warney!! Please, what a joke, you may as well have Fatty Vautin hosting it.

  • Warne?!. What a stupid choice. Anyway, if Nein have the show, it will be driven by the sponsors. We'll never hear any criticism of the cars.

JB of Melbourne Posted on 21 October 2009 3:31pm
  • Oh no ...

Sue Rage Posted on 21 October 2009 2:58pm
  • Warne may have a few fancy cars up his sleeve but aren't we forgetting Top Gear isn't just about fancy cars but cars for those that aren't in the 6 figure bracket i think Warne would just ruin the show, Clarkson, Hammond and May are the real reasons I watch Top Gear and the cars too i guess its because they have good chemistry together there not like any other trio on tv. Aussie Top Gear was good but I don't think it could ever be as great as British Top Gear but it isn't a bad show either but that's just my opinion. (p.s hammonds awesome!)
