Petrol prices tipped to drop

Australian petrol prices fluctuate according to the world price of oil and are currently soaring over $1.50 a litre.

The price of petrol could be set to drop later this year.

Shell has predicted that oil prices could fall to about $70 a barrel from current levels above $110, citing high volatility in the economy and energy markets.

Australian petrol prices fluctuate according to the world price of oil and are currently soaring over $1.50 a litre.

Royal Dutch Shell boss Peter Voser revealed that 2011 profits rose 54 per cent last year to $28.6bn, but said they estimated oil prices would slip "inside a $50-$90 range'' this year.

He blamed "unprecedented geopolitical events" such as the Japanese earthquake, eurozone crisis and the Arab spring for a slide in oil demand and a subsequent drop in prices last year.

"The global economy and energy markets are likely to see continued high volatility," he said.

Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) boss Richard Dudley says world oil prices will "always have a considerable beating on the price of fuel here".

"However, what we are more concerned about is the discounting war by the two supermarket giants," he says.

Dudley says discounting over the holiday period had blown out to up to 25c a litre, but had since increased to 35c if motorists also buy alcohol.

"These are just temporary discounting activities but what we are looking at a future where the independents are forced out and motorists will be at the mercy of a duopoly dictating market prices. We have lost thousands of index retailers over last decade and about 2500 have left the industry in Victoria alone. Genuine competition in the market is what we want."

  • Ok, so petrol is at near record highs, yet barrel prices arent and our exchange rate is good, so where is our hard earned going now? And can someone tell me why LPG is up to 90c a litre now? This is ridiculous! we produce LPG here and the excise only went up 2.5 cents this year, yet the pump price of gas shot up 30c that's a third more! It was only 60c/ litre a month ago! Why? I think we need some answers! If the Price of petrol went up by a third there would be war...

  • Unbelievable, you people think every motorist is an idiot, when oil was $150 a barrel we were paying about $1.50per litre, and the exchange rate was about 75cents in the dollar why are we paying $1.50per litre when a barrel of oil is $98 and the exchange rate is $1.07......I know, it's because SHELL needs to bleed every motorist dry. Why doesn't carsguide and the autoclubs tell us the truth, OR HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN THREATENED BY THE OIL COMPANY"S TO KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF you people are a disgrace to the motoring public!

  • Profits up 54%. So why are they waiting to drop petrol prices? In reality they are waiting to see if the world economy can improve so that they can maintain high prices! (It is also known as major "BS")

  • It is important that we trade with Australian businesses and not multinational owned forign corporations, who are out to destroy all Australian businesses. Once they have acheived this then the prices will soar as there will be no competition left. Does anyone seriously think supermarket fuel vouchers truly reduce costs? The supermarkets allow for that when setting the prices on the items they sell. They are forcing their competision out of business which creates redundancies and more people on welfare benefits, many having no prospects of employment in the near future. How many people have been made redundent so far this year? We are only in the 2nd month of 2012. We must support the independant fuel stations and businesses, if we don't we will all suffer later when there are no independants left

  • How is it that their PROFITS increased 54 % ....? Isn't that enough to SHOW that they are RIPPING the customers off on so called "RAISED MARKET AND MANUFACTURING?" And all they are doing is just blatant RIP OFFS at the pump anyhow by the 2 mega Giants ...Unfair of them and letting the public stress unnecessary for the prices they are doing... NOW if they are making that profit above their usual who is ripping who off!

  • All the people that go and buy petrol from Coles and Woolworths are just making it worse. I'm on petrol but what was with this week's 59c > 79c jump in the gas (in NSW anyway)>

MattW of Newcastle Posted on 08 February 2012 6:25pm
  • Omg you do gooders believe this? But did they factor in co2 tax which will no likely keep prices high regardless and when the barrel price returns to $100 we will get sludged for it like always...

  • I don't know if you guys have noticed but there is going to be a war in the middle east between Israel , the Usa and Iran. It will happen folks, probaly mid year. Israel can't afford to let Iran get to nuclear weapon stage, so what ya reckon that'll do to fuel prices, I think we'll be seein $2 a litre or more by years end. I wish these people would look at the world big picture before making these statements.

  • With strong australia dollar petrol price is a rip off.

kifi of perth Posted on 08 February 2012 5:40pm
  • The goverment wont allow the price to drop as they get too much GST from the higher prices . It's all political with the pricing.

rogkin of Hunter Valley Posted on 08 February 2012 5:36pm
  • I thought the Oil companies down here & ACCC said that the price of petrol was relative to the Singapore market and not the US Barrel? Or is that the excuse when the US barrel comes down? Either way, we're getting rorted - what's new !

Big Fumes Posted on 08 February 2012 5:24pm
  • We need to boycott the major two players and support the independents. I 4c saving for most people would be $2 a week, which is spent on coffee, liquor, cakes, ciggs etc . get the picture!
