The big guns of offroading are set for a major showdown.

Following in the footsteps of the new V8-powered, independent suspension in the Toyota LandCruiser, Nissan has revealed its seventh-generation Patrol in the Mid-East.

Drivetrain and equipment

The new Patrol is powered by a V8 – which will be the first in a Patrol for the Australian market -- a 5.6-litre direct-injection engine has 400 horsepower and 550Nm of torque while the new Patrol also features fully independent suspension rather than a live rear axle.

The Mid-East launch in Abu Dhabi presented a more luxurious and softer looking Patrol with more leather, polished aluminium and wood grain trim, a cool box in the centre console, multi-screen DVD entertainment system, seven-speed automatic transmission, more interior space especially in the second and third rows, a claimed quieter ride and a curtain of cold air over the windows to prevent heat from penetrating the cabin.

The new Patrol also has newly developed All Mode four-wheel drive which allows the driver to electronically switch between sand, on-road, snow and rock modes.  It has Hill Start Assist to prevent the vehicle rolling back and Hill Descent Control that uses the brakes to maintain a constant downhill speed of 7km/h in 4H mode and 4km/h in 4L mode.

Patrol also features a Hydraulic Body Motion Control System to keeps it flatter with less body roll when cornering.  Nissan has revised its tyre pressure monitor system with a tyre inflation indicator that beeps the horn softly when the suitable pressure has been reached.   Patrol also gets a new hydraulic brake booster and four-piston opposed front calliper with larger 358mm front discs.

Patrol for Australia

Nissan Australia senior corporate communications manager Jeffrey Fisher points out that the Mid-East unveiling at the weekend was not a world launch and different configurations could be available here.

"They launched it with a V8 petrol engine because they are only interested in big petrol engines in the Mid-East, he says.  "However, we will take it (the V8), because we see a role for it. It’s more frugal than previous versions.”  He says Australia will likely continue with the option of a four-cylinder diesel engine.

Nissan has declared its intention to move toward small electric cars such as the Leaf, rather than hybrids. Fisher says Nissan has not mentioned anything about a hybrid version of the Patrol.  "But never say never. The way the world is moving we should keep an open mind,” he says.

Fisher says the move to independent suspension would not reduce the hardcore off-road ability of the vehicle, however it is difficult to see its rock crawling abilities matching the current GU series.  "Popular theory says that things with a live axle are better for rock hopping, but where were heading with this (independent suspension) is that we think it is a good blend with the ladder suspension, he says.

"The expectation is that it is every bit as good and will match the current Patrol in off-road ability, however we don’t have the ramp-over angles and details yet, so we can’t tell.  Nissan claims only about 15 per cent of Patrol owners worldwide take their vehicle off road.

"Anecdotal evidence is that it is higher in Australia, but probably not much," says Fisher.  The new Patrol is not expected to arrive in Australia this year.  "Its still some ways off. Not this year,” says Fisher.

"We are into a launch countdown but it won't be this year. We are still awaiting right-hand-drive production dates and spec advice.   "GU is the current model designation, but we’re not sure what the next model designation will be. They are calling it P61G, but that may change.”

Large SUV sales last year were down by almost a third, but Fisher says there is still room for large and capable off-road vehicles in Australia.
"Patrol is iconic and we would argue that it is one of the vehicles that has created a reputation for Nissan here, he says.

Patrol was the first vehicle to successfully cross the gruelling Simpson Desert in Australia in 1962."When a lot of Australians think of a Nissan, they think of Patrol.  "It is a backbone in Australia for large 4WD wagons. Definitely something we want to continue.

"Sales have retracted a bit. In its heyday in the early 90s we were looking at 800 a month and we are about half of that now.  But (Land)Cruiser 200 is back on the scene and doing well reviving their fortunes and we think that when new Patrol comes along we will help grow the whole sector.

  • In 2002 I bought a new 4.8 Patrol and I love it. A year ago KRudd said we should all buy new toys so I bought a 200 Diesel Cruiser. One year old and the Cruiser has done about 10K and the Patrol (same time) has done about 50K, I love it, but it has to go. Rego for the Patrol is about $600/yr and the Cruiser about $900/yr. I'll miss the Patrol, but the Cruisers good. Glad I didn't wait for the new Nissan.

  • Nissan is just better off road. Which is why i bought one, I hate getting ripped off . Toyota is good but really for the soccer mums..

  • Yeah it looks ok I guess... (really)? It looks like a Landcruiser 200. I own a Landcruiser for the fact that it's a proven performer on and off-road. I only hope this new Patrol can match it.

  • Good grief!! A TD42 under the bonnet. You MUST be kidding!! That's 30yr old technology with a turbo bolted onto it. It's VERY thirsty and has asthmatic performance. Surely Nissan has evolved in the last 30 yrs with engine technology.

  • "It is a backbone in Australia for large 4WD wagons" Really? i've always known it as the 'poor mans landcruiser'..... No offence to any patrol owners out there.

  • So what we would really like is this new shape(if we must), the bullet proof gu drive train including live axles for those of us who do venture off the black stuff and toyotas' v8 diesel. I'll take one!

  • I had my fingers crossed but to no avail! I was told from a Nissan Dealer that we could expect a Renault 6 cyl or even a Merc!! I really don't care who makes the engine as long as it is a "6cyl 4.2 TD42. That was and will always be the winner in the Patrol series. And why did they not ask us Patrol owners what we wanted rather than use the ideas of people in the R&D department that don;t even own one? If I wanted a Land Cruiser I would have bought the genuine article- not a wanna be look a like. You have let us down again Nissan. You could have been a contender.

  • it looks like you have lost your way nissan, you should have left the "patrol" name to die with the last of the real 4WD's. Keep the live axles and bread a new TD42 then call it a patrol.

  • all well and said, but no nissan diesel motor 4 pot or more has as much of a statement as the TD42, toyota have out matched that twice now, with the 12ht and now the current twin turbo V8, why would i hold out for a new 4 cylinder patrol when i can buy a very good toyota today?

Tom Carlisle of gold coast Posted on 24 February 2010 12:48am
  • I'm sure it'll make a very nice Toorak Tourer. Why not finish it off by removing that extra diff up front, since it'll never be used anyway.

Beefer of Airlie Beach Posted on 23 February 2010 11:56pm
  • its almost a copy of the 200 series landcruiser from the front and internals dash is identical to the vx / Sahara same as seats and door pannels the rear is almost identical to the Lexus 570 lights etc :( buy the cruiser and get the real thing not just a copy with a four banger diesel and get the Twin Turbo v8

    Richard Posted on 23 February 2010 10:04pm
  • Very nice looking machine, Nissan better offer this with a decent capacity/power engine or they will have made a serious mistake. Its Landcruiser sales you got to get Nissan, do what it takes and you will do very well

Tim of Mackay Posted on 23 February 2010 7:38pm
  • Now that the toyotas have gone down the toilet the nissans might make some ground.

tucson of perth Posted on 23 February 2010 4:55pm
  • 4 cylinder engine in something that big?? Will it move at all?

DW of Brisbane Posted on 23 February 2010 4:06pm
  • why go 4 cyl diesel how can that compete with the 200 series twin turbo inter cooled v8...hmmm

Osh of Melbourne Posted on 23 February 2010 3:25pm
  • What a great looking 4x 4,love the interior, real family wagon, not just a work horse, I have a Nissan Patrol ute for my farm work and what a wonderful vehicle that is. I'm looking from a female point of view.I just love looking at new models. Sadly I can't afford one, raising my 2 grandsons takes all my money, but I can still see a winner when one comes a long, go Nissan. KS

Karen Sinclair Posted on 23 February 2010 2:48pm
  • Nissans blown another chance - I do not want a dress 4x4, I want a work horse. I am now rebuilding the 4.2 litre motor in my 1991 GQ / Maverick and going to work in old faithful.

Kevin Rockemer of Central Australia Posted on 23 February 2010 2:31pm
  • Dont like the look in general... Some interesting new technology bits, but would not change my GU for it (even if they pay me the difference). By the way my GU is LPG/ULD and yes has been off road (more than once) all the way across the top on the Savanah way and up to Cooktown throught the Bloomfield....

    frenchy138 Posted on 23 February 2010 2:16pm
  • V8 gas guzzler, soft roader suspension, the end of an era, and 400 horse power? Where are the green bits? maybe the extra cylinders shut down when not needed? but what about the size of the Patrol? what for? to take the kids to school or go to the supermarket. I thought we were changing our consumer habits. Maybe we have with sales way down, could just be the recession.

Bob of TERRIGAL Posted on 23 February 2010 1:27pm
  • if it goes as good as it looks, it'll be a winner. but as Howard pointed out "4 cyl diesel" get off the drugs Nissan !

Shtirrer of Australia Posted on 23 February 2010 12:21pm
  • any footage of the arabs 2 wheeling these yet?

gallopingant of au Posted on 23 February 2010 12:21pm
  • Isn't there enough SOFT looking 4WD's on the market? I'll be keeping my current GU thanks! I didn't buy it for the leather trim, DVD players and wood grain finish... I bought it because of it's capable off road ability, toughness and because it wasn't a pretend 4X4 that sits in traffic on the way to and from work.

  • why go 4 cyl diesel how can that compete with the 200 series twin turbo inter cooled v8...hmmm

Osh of Melbourne Posted on 23 February 2010 12:10pm
  • Still persisting with the 'Hand Grenade' 4cyl. Hopefully it is only temporary

Greg of WA Posted on 23 February 2010 12:09pm
  • Nissan needs to wake up! If they intend to release another imploding 4 cylinder diesel onto the Australian Market then they should withdraw immediately. At least be equal to the 200 series Cruiser and offer a real diesel option.

Phil McLean of Brisbane Posted on 23 February 2010 12:08pm

Osh of Melbourne Posted on 23 February 2010 12:05pm
  • I think that the Nissan Patrol looks identical to the 150 series Prado mixed with the 200 series Landcruiser

adam of Newcastle Posted on 23 February 2010 12:01pm
  • Two years too late, looks ugly not a lot of information on the diesel option. And lets not forget no definitive Australian launch date.

    Alex Posted on 23 February 2010 11:59am
  • Sure is an ugly looking creature, and in appearance not unlike the 200. I bet it's tough as boots, but is this where the market still is??

    ricko Posted on 23 February 2010 11:43am
  • A four cylinder diesel. It is the 21st century Nissan, hello.
