New Land Rover Defender DC100 concept

The new look CD100 is much softer and organic than the slab-sided Defender original.

It's a Land Rover Defender, Jim, but not as we know it.

This is a new Land Rover Defender, but not like anything that has won the badge in the past.

Land Rover is reinventing and refining its down-and-dirty workhorse for the 21st century and the result goes public next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show - wearing a DC100 tag. It's officially just a concept car, but the real reason for the creation of DC100is to test the reaction from Land Rover tragics who would prefer the Defender stays as it is - forever.

It's a similar approach to the Range Rover Evoque, which pioneered a new path into a city-first Land Rover for Mini-type buyers and was also previewed on the motor show stage to ensure buyers were happy to come along for the ride. The new look in DC100is much softer and organic than the slab-sided Defender original, which still looks as if it drove - alongside the first Jeep - away from the celebrations at the end of World War II.

The DC100 promises to be just as tough and just as capable in off-road conditions, which is why Land Rover took it onto a muddy track at Eastnor Castle - its traditional off-road proving ground in Britain - for some pictures. The shots reveal a short-wheelbase, three-door body with a very boxy outline that is softened by a smooth nose and big flared guards covering the oversized alloy wheels.

The nose and tail are both tucked in tight to minimise overhangs and there are style-driven mirrors mounted on stalks and tow hooks in the front end to give a tougher look. There is no news yet on powerplants for DC100, but it is likely to be a hybrid drive for motor show displays despite the overwhelming preference for basic diesels and manual gearboxes in the Defender. Land Rover admits it intends to break the mould on Defender in 2015 and, based on the look of the DC100, it is going for revolution over evolution.

  • What a stupid idea. Wasn’t it possible to improve ergonomics without creating this mini monstrosity. A defender was instantly recognizable. The DC100 would be lost among the lookalikes

  • Dear oh Dear thought it was a Toyota!! Why do so called wise men of design think they know what we the consumer would prefer? Sorry old boy keep the original shape please, lets be honest, style and gallantry never go out of style - J G Douglas Perth w.a. ,

  • I want the new defender to look modern and not a poor retro take on the old side profile good, rear view OK if a little bling and plasticky in concept form, but the front end just looks clumsy at the moment, headlights look like they have been out in the rain and it's mascara has run all down the front wing, old defender was never a beauty but was never ugly either, and the winch looks like it's bottom lip is sticking out, it looks a miserable and unhappy car from the front, 100 sport face is much better, not overly convinced with all the badge and drilled out plastic plastered everywhere either, agreed low profile tyres won't work off road, but this is only a concept and never a reality, 17" wheels should be a more reasonable offering by 2015, and there will be plenty of aftermarket gear to beef up the underside protection, I for one like the fact they are going away from live axles, they only work off road whereas the disco3/4 IFS works both on and off, its the future although some die hard won't agree. Give it a more utilitarian and less Tonka toy look, fix the grumpy face and where do i sign?

  • Plus, I think there's too much plastic and not enough clearance, and it looks soft. Oh, but it's a concept version, and that will change. Silly me.

  • Don't mind the looks ... what's under the window dressing though?

  • @bill, why are simpletons like you allowed to purchase PCs?

  • It's a concept car bonehead, that will change with the production version.

  • Can't see how those wheels would add to the proven offroad ability.
