A dazzling blue Monaro was rushed to Victoria to star at the 2009 Melbourne Motor Show.

The hand-built supercar is the latest extreme machine to join the show lineup, which also includes wicked Sucker Punch Sallys motorcycles from the USA.

But the Monaro is a car with a difference, right down to its name - The Monaro from HAL.

Every panel on the car has been tweaked and it is fitted with a 427 Corvette engine and a full custom interior. And there is the one-off blue paintwork.

The car is a joint venture between one-time supercar hero Paul Halstead, who was the Australia importer for DeTomaso cars and created the locally-built Giacattolo, and Autotek chief Bob Roman.

Between them they have more than 50 years experience in engineering and fast cars which is reflected in their super-special Monaro.

"It's a one-off. We took a brand-new Monaro and did something very special," Roman says.

"It has been totally stripped and then re-sculpted to Paul Halstead's vision."

The car was built in Castlemaine and finished this week in time for a first public appearance at the motor show. It will also be the key to a reader contest in next week's edition of the Carsguide.

But, even more, it reflects the depth of Australian motoring expertise and that is something Halstead and Roman will be pushing with a new joint venture between Autotek and ADAPS to provide automotive engineers and project managers to the industry.

It's a new contract plan which is in its infancy but which can be used for cars like the Monaro, and more.

"Concept cars are the traffic magnets and the heart-and-soul of every motor show," Roman says.

"We think creating a car like the Monaro from HAL is a great way to get people thinking about the talent that is available to the Australian motor industry. We are moving to the next level of services to the industry.

"We want to occupy our own place. Show we're at the cutting edge."

The result is a car with wild flared guards, a deep jutting nose and an aero diffuser under the rear bumper. It also has a full custom interior and an upgraded Corvette-style mechanical package.

"It's street legal but race ready," Roman says.

"And it's all steel. There is no plastic or fibreglass, the car is completely real."

Roman says the car cost around $250,000 to build but it is a cheap investment in the future of a new company.

"The vehicle itself is basically to show the skills of both companies, on a special project. We could do the same thing on a concept car, or skilled labour in any level of the automotive business."

The Monaro from HAL is actually the latest in a string of wild one-off cars created by Roman, from a Hillier Falcon coupe to the gullwing Raptor ute and a Commodore ute known simply as `The Beast'.

But there is more to come from the Autotek-ADAPS, in time for the next Melbourne Motor Show in 2011.

"We're working on something even more radical. It is a rear-mid engined supercar. But that's something for the future," Roman says.

The Melbourne Motor Show opens at 5pm on Friday, February 27 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

It runs from 10am-10pm each day until Sunday, March 8.

The final day of the show is Monday, March 9 when it is open from 10am-6pm.

  • Nice effort, but clearly ripped off body kit from the Pontiac GTO Ram Air 6 2004 Concept built in the US, so about five years out of date?

  • Looks pretty good to me. I didn't know Commodore was spelt Commador. Probably a Ford driver. I still prefer the look of the Monaros in the late 60s/early 70s.

  • Great looking car. It just goes to show what a great job they did with the Monaro. The shape looks as good today as it did back then. Great work with the HAL Monaro, look forward to seeing what they can come up with next. True Aussie muscle car for 2009. looks great from every angle. Lets leave the electric cars at Tandy, in the toy section, where they belong.

  • All I can say it very sad. Because it was axed, there never going to be another like this Monaro.

  • You can see many of the dreary mongers looking down on some beautiful works done on a Monaro.Basically boils thier broth cause they can't have such a piece of art. Maybe they need to go and trade in all thier FORD loving ,diesel stinking POS to a charity for shelters for the homeless..BMW's just dig a nice big hole n bury them ...out of sight out of mind... OK back to what really counts,GREAT paint awesome colour ,body is very stylish (AUSSIE STYLE) !!! Flared body i like very much . Great to know its non production alike some of these who commented earlier...poor reading on their behalf..tsk tsk... Nice job 427 HAL !!!

  • What a magnificant piece of work. I am lost for words. Well done guys. I want one.

Tammy Zeplin of Perth Posted on 03 March 2009 2:40pm
  • Well when the show finishes, can I have it?

The Sword of Panania Posted on 03 March 2009 2:23pm
  • I hope it's a bad photo because it looks a bit bloated, + a Ford Mustang touch at the front. And PLEASE get rid of the bonnet scoops-they are SO '60's American! (Can you read Subaru design people?) Should go alright though.

  • O---M---G !! This thing has the fattest rear end I've ever seen. (And that's a good thing) raspberry

  • That's Art!

  • Just took a gorgeous car and made it somewhat more sleeker and modern considering the age of the last product monaro. I still believe the Coupe 60 has a market - now that's a FANTASTIC looking vehicle!

  • Yes, yes, yes we need greener cars but really, what we WANT is escapist fantasy dream machines like this! C'mon, you're not really watching Top Gear hoping that Clarkson will one day give the thumbs-up to a Prius, are you? You're missing the point: HAL427 is pure eye candy, the stuff you sketched as a kid at the back of your maths class, the reason you bought a PS3 with Gran Turismo. Lighten up, all you tall poppy snippers! This is about two blokes who came up with a really cool showcase for their combined talents, and having fun with it. Fun - remember fun? Oh, it's no use - I'll let you get back to calculating the improved fuel consumption of your hybrid when you push the radio aerial all the way in...

  • Its abit of fun, but also showcases our skills we have here, to all the greenies no-one drives a v8 bmw, benz, lexus, rolls, bentley.and a few mad italian makes. Hey its not for production just a one off to highlight what australian guys can AND will in the future on budgets that others companies spend on a make over of a bumber bar. Be proud of what we can do...in some areas the best in the world.....go for it......I'll be going to the show just to see it, mite not have gone otherwise.

Harry Laurenceson of FRANKSTON Posted on 02 March 2009 6:07pm
  • It looks like a ford

    paul Posted on 02 March 2009 5:50pm
  • Seriously ugly car. OMFG, how hideous is it? A concept at sucking perhaps. I understand a lot of work and skill has gone into executing this monstrosity... but perhaps someone should have thought about the design before starting. Urgh, it is so bad wink Does it come with fuzzy dice and a mullet?

NacaYoda of Melbourne Posted on 02 March 2009 5:43pm
  • It took Ford twenty years to understand a modern Mustang had to resemble the original Mustang. Calling this a two door a Monaro, does a Monaro not make. It looks like what it is, a two door Commador. Its got the stance of queer eye for the gay guy. All bent over ready for a rear ending, weak and apollogising for it self for even being on four wheels.

Tamplin of brisbane Posted on 02 March 2009 5:28pm
  • I use to love the 327 Monaro my cousin had in 1968 - but things have changed and I wouldn't buy one - I currently have a diesel Astra and love that.

Stephen Annett of Melbourne Posted on 02 March 2009 5:17pm
  • Glad I bought my VZ Monaro 4 years ago & kept it. Why bother trading it in for something newer? It still goes hard, has depreciated by only half, servicing is cheap, & the best bit of all, if you squint your eyes & look it appears nearly the same as the HAL Monaro! Nevertheless the HAL Monaro has beautiful workmanship & great specifications, but how about something new from scratch guys, not just neo-retro.

Robert of Turrella Posted on 02 March 2009 5:10pm
  • I love it. Rarely can you not enhance a car. The curves, the grunt the interior works well. Enviromental as we may be going, there's always a place for muscle and the alternative fuels to run them. Keep up the good LOCAL work.

Adam of Melbourne Posted on 02 March 2009 5:02pm
  • Can you people not read? It is a one off car made to showcase the designers talent. It will not be going into production. It does not cost 250k to buy, thats how much it cost to build BTW I think it looks awesome

    Chris Posted on 02 March 2009 4:42pm
  • Beautiful car by anyone's standards.Love the look of it.Great color too.Monaros are just the best.

Harry Leek of Melbourne Posted on 02 March 2009 4:13pm
  • The only thing this car is good for is to drive it to the nearest police station, smoke 'em up so the police confiscate it and send it to be crushed. This is not a real Monaro.

    B rad Stevens Posted on 02 March 2009 3:28pm
  • I'm sure it goes hard, but this vehicle has no class whatsoever.

Dave Mitchell of Sydney Posted on 02 March 2009 3:02pm
  • I don't care what anyone says...this car is damn gorgeous! Shame Holden phased the Monaro out. Yes there's a need for greener cars but these beauties still have their place. Two BIG thumbs up from me!

Mark E of Sydney Posted on 02 March 2009 3:00pm
  • You guys need to go and suck on your Prius exhaust fumes, how many will they sell? 10, 20? at best, ok, maybe 2 at that price, but will they be driven every day causing some catastrophic localised global warming? Of course not. Think a little more logical before you get all environmental, the very same 427 in the Corvette is rated for 15.6L/100 city, 10L/100 highway. Compare that to the 500,000+ Toyota, Nissan, Wange Wover 4WD's consuming well over 20L/100 dropping the kiddies off to school every day.

Ross M of Melbourne Posted on 02 March 2009 3:00pm
  • Looks ugly to me. Again just a fuel guzzling piece of of someone who is bored. Get smart and build something people are interested in, that is fuel smart cars that perform. Like the BMW 335i.

Richard B of Gold Coast Posted on 02 March 2009 2:57pm
  • I wouldn't put it into production, the cost of tires alone would put a bankers ransom to shame. I'd never spend that kind of money on a trumped up commodore.

Micahel of Sunshine Coast Posted on 02 March 2009 2:46pm
  • I cannot believe this Yank Wannabe. Wake the hell up Holden.

  • I cannot believe this Yank Wannabe. Wake the hell up Holden.

Steve T of Adelaide Posted on 02 March 2009 2:41pm
  • The HYUNDAI TIBURON from 2005 onward is an excellent vehicle and stands long side this in terms of good looks scoff if you like..... but its popularity is huge internationally yet to be seen with this car in any form even the yanks disliked the original Monaro sent a few years back

Brian Mason of Melbourne Posted on 02 March 2009 10:53am
  • Great, we can showcase the fact that we use second hand American parts. Steel designs from the mustang, rehash idea's from the Monaro and HSV.... Not to mention the blind ignorance toward environmental issues. This article is misleading and ignorant.

James Vickers of Melbourne Posted on 01 March 2009 11:18pm
  • It a shame that Holden won't be reviving the Monero at all. But Tarona has the green light to revive.

    Carlover Posted on 01 March 2009 6:17pm
  • Yep, a tarted up version of the two door Commodore, with an American pushrod engine and none of that new fangled carbon fibre stuff or even fibreglass. Certainly cutting edge and a technological breakthrough.

Daryl Saal of Toowoomba Posted on 28 February 2009 2:26pm
  • It's still just a Commodore!

    Phil Posted on 28 February 2009 11:30am
  • Looks like poop. It's as if some bogan teen has been given the car, 50 grand and tried to make it look 'cool'. Whilst I can appreciate the effort and I'm sure it has a high quality of finish but the styling still leaves a lot to be desired. Sorry, fail

Coookie of Milton Posted on 27 February 2009 5:27pm
  • Hillier Falcon coupe, Raptor Ute, Commodore Ute and `The Beast' - These designs all represent an era far removed from modern times. We need concept cars that are greener, leaner and more 'bang for your buck'. Not petrol guzzling beast so impractical that there will never be a full production line. Wake up and listen.

Belly of Sydney East Posted on 27 February 2009 3:45pm
  • A 427 Corvette big block, what the hell is wrong with you? With the current catch cry 'Green' why the hell are you still playing with dinosaur bones. Idiots! As America moves to alternative and greener motoring, you're stuck with your heads still in the 80's. Once again Australian car manufacturers have proven that they are not listening. Morons.
