Early returns from January's showroom blitz point to a Mazda 3 victory and a flying start to its 2012 battle with the Holden Commodore and Toyota Corolla.

Official VFacts numbers will not be public until Friday, when the scale of the Mazda's win will be revealed, but industry insiders hint that there will be no surprise when the numbers come.

The Mazda3 ended 15 years of Commodore rule at number one in December and has also led the small-car charge on local roads for more than 18 months.

But Toyota traditionally starts the year relatively slowly, because there are no major fleet sales in January, and Holden is also likely to hit back in coming months for the same reason.
