January's showroom blitz point to a Mazda3 victory and a flying start to its 2012 battle.

The reigning Australian showroom champion looks to have done it again.

Early returns from January's showroom blitz point to a Mazda3 victory and a flying start to its 2012 battle with the Holden Commodore and Toyota Corolla.

Official VFacts numbers will not be public until Friday, when the scale of the Mazda's win will be revealed, but industry insiders hint that there will be no surprise when the numbers come.

The Mazda3 ended 15 years of Commodore rule at number one in December and has also led the small-car charge on local roads for more than 18 months.

But Toyota traditionally starts the year relatively slowly, because there are no major fleet sales in January, and Holden is also likely to hit back in coming months for the same reason.

  • Dave S, I think its cool to own they best vehicle to suit my needs, and if it isn't built here, that's fine! I need a small city car, a hatch suits my needs and there was none built here when I bought it. The Mazda 3 is selling because its a good car at a competitive price.

  • Who ever says Mazda doesn't do fleets is crazy . . . I have seen heaps of Mazda 3s with Wizard Home written on them!

  • Previously I would have said a small car at #1 is good regardless of the fact it is an import... but it does show that Holden has a huge opportunity with the Cruze hatch adding to the sedan and its unfortunate they have not made more ground. It may be that dealers are still trying to flog the Commodore rather than embracing the Cruze. I like the Cruze but the Mazda3 has a great reputation and proven resale.

  • Any time an import is number 1. It is bad news. Something is wrong. Sorry, Australian workers some people think it is cool to own an import.

  • Glad the Mazda3 is ontop cos it represent the non-fleet inflatted figure of the Commodore and the least deserving Corolla. So in a way its the true numbers of sale of private buyers who spend their hard own cash not just tick a box dictate by what fleet like.
