Malibu will save Commodore

Artist's impression of the Holden Malibu, based on the Chevrolet unveiled this week in New York.

THE future of the Holden Commodore is about to be made safer thanks to the Chevrolet Malibu.

The all-new, global mid-sized car is seen in public for the first time at the New York Motor Show and Chevrolet boss Mark Reuss says it will be a boost - not a threat - to the Commodore.

GM Holden has already confirmed the Malibu as a Holden and Reuss, the former top man at Fishermans Bend, believes the two-car strategy will work well in Australia.

"I think it actually, in some strange ways, secures some of the rear- wheel drive production that we have there because it's so different. The cars are so different," Reuss tells Carsguide. "And I think we're going to be able to demonstrate that at Holden. That's very important."

Reuss cannot resist a slight swipe at Ford over ongoing speculation about the Falcon, and the potential to eventually twin it beyond 2015 with the Taurus from the USA instead of leaving it as a uniquely local vehicle.

"Where you see some makers converging on one type of vehicle, we're going to have two different vehicles. I think it's important because there are a lot of different tastes we'll be able to satisfy."

Reuss set the Holden product plan before he was called back to the top job at Chevrolet in the USA and knows what is expected from the Malibu as it joins the compact Cruze and the Commodore. "I was there when it was signed off. I think it's going to be very good in Australia. I think it's very relevant," he says of the Malibu.

Reuss also believes there is a place for cars which drive from opposite ends, with the Malibu able to compete with rivals including the Toyota Camry while the Commodore continues to line up against the Falcon. "I think front-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are very different. The package will be very different."

Without going into detail, Reuss says the Malibu line-up is likely to be extended with other body types, perhaps including a coupe and a station wagon. The car is built on what GM calls its 'Epsilon platform' and that can be capped with a variety of body styles, as well as being adaptable for production in the USA, China and Korea, which will supply the Malibu for Australia.

"I think there are a lot of variants that are Epsilon based that we are looking at. The turnaround time would be very short. "Anything is a possibility on that. The wagons may become a relevant point that we want to leverage," he says.

Reuss refuses - again - to comment on persistent speculation about a major new export deal based on the Commodore, perhaps with the Aussie ute joining Chevrolet's pickup range to provide a more fuel-efficient contender than some of its current line-up.

  • GM should have included a hatchback and/or a wagon from day one! The Opel Insignia sedan and hatchback share the same bodyshell, so it wouldn't be too hard to have a Malibu hatchback as well.

  • How can you say "better than......" or "worse than......." when we haven't even seen it yet.......other than in pics.

  • meh...the current customer quality problems with Holden will sink them anyway. Few customers accept returning to the dealer every month for 3 years anymore.

  • Malibu is a poor name. That alone would stop me ever buying one... What are they thinking?

I've got an opinion on everything of Richmond VIC Posted on 01 May 2011 4:40pm
  • Casey of Melbourne the car is not a Korean rebadge at all, maybe get your facts sorted. The car will be made there along with many other places but it is American designed and not a Daewoo. Personally i think the thing that will ruin Holden will be the selling of the Opel range of cars here, taking valuable Cruze and Malibu sales away without being able to prop up Commodore! Ford Mondeo what? How many of those do they sell? If you were any real motoring enthusiast you would brag about the soon to arrive Focus.

  • I was very impressed with the Malibu during a recent visit to the US. I drive a Commodore here and I think this is a forward-thinking idea.

  • New Commodore - we saw the same in '79/'80 when the VB Commodore was to supplement the Torana and Kingswood - and almost immediately took over. It's GM foisting their global version on Australia. Which may be a good thing - Falcon and Commodore aren't doing very well, really.

  • I cannot get excited about this car. From what i have seen of the interior, in my opinion it is already so dated and old hat. Still i suppose one has to reserve some judgment until one drives it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ford has the Falcon and the Mondeo, so what is guy going on about GM going to have two large cars.

  • I'm sure this Camry clone will be built as well as the first Camiras, have just as many inherent problems, and sell about as well as the Camira. The name "Malibu" is supposed to bring on a rush of excitement, is it? All I can think of, is that the name reminds me of an America that no longer exists. The Holden Bankrupt would be a better name. I guess those car designers still live in Dreamland.

  • This may be the replacement for the Commodore by stealth?

Ron R of ACT Posted on 29 April 2011 12:18pm
  • Yes, but who will save Malibu??

The Realist Posted on 28 April 2011 5:04pm
  • Are you serious? Its a Deawoo Tosca, rebadged as a Holden Epica. The Epica failed so they are (re)introducing the Deawoo Tosca (Holden Epica) with a Chev body kit and calling it a Holden Malibu. But the bogan Holden idiots will buy it even though its still a Deawoo/Holden Epica with a new name and new front end...The new euro Mondeo wipes the floor with this Korean POS!

  • Anton, Whilst its true that a lot of commodores are fleet sales, dont neglect the fact that many people choose their own fleet vehicles based on preference. Personally, I would not accept a company or lease vehicle into my possession which wasn't RWD or AWD. Ive met Mark Reuss and he understands this fact which is why he is 100% behind Zeta platformed vehicles

  • Cant wait to see all the Holden bogans put Chev badges on these too!

    DJB Posted on 28 April 2011 12:58pm
  • wagon version?

kaygas of nintendo Posted on 27 April 2011 6:56pm
  • I would be very surprised if the Malibu would stack up in any measure against the Mondeo. It will be cheap though, and cheap sells even if it is rubbish. I would love to see a comparison once both have done 50,000 kms.

  • Another Korean cheapy for Holden to add to their Korean lineup of subpar vehicles

Bollywood Shak Posted on 27 April 2011 2:14pm
  • Still wouldn't buy a Holden no matter how good it apparently is. Holden dealerships have sworn me off them, got bitten twice, never again. After owning 2 Holden?s, I've bought two Nissans, 1 Mazda, 1 Toyota and 1 Ford. Have had much better treatment and service with the Nissan, Toyota, Mazda and Ford dealerships. So Mr Reuss, it?s not just the product. By the way, I'd buy a Kia or a Hyundai if I ever felt like driving a Korean car, as much as I doubt that I'll drive/own a Korean car in the near future. Some Kia's looks really great, unlike these re-badged DAEWOO cars.

BT Dandenong South Posted on 25 April 2011 10:03pm
  • Fantastic! Bring it on, cant wait until it hits our showrooms.

Nick Moulas of Melbourne Posted on 25 April 2011 6:44pm
  • Anton, how does Holden have too many models. They have many less models than Toyota and many other marques out there? They are really only bringing in a true competitor in the mid sized class to battle it out with the Camry.

Shak of New South Wales Posted on 25 April 2011 12:17pm
  • At least it is better than an Epica but still not as good as the Mondeo.

Rocket of Brisbane Posted on 25 April 2011 11:53am
  • The Holden is a nice looking car, this appears unbalanced, specifically, too heavy at the front end.

Tony Tanner Posted on 24 April 2011 10:47am
  • I think there is a fair bit of anti U.S.sentiment here because of their global antics...."Malibu" isn't a good choice of name

steveo of innerwest Posted on 24 April 2011 9:19am
  • Hmmm..................Too many models? Doesn't seem to cause too many problems with Toyota. Lots of models to plug every niche. Results in lots of sales. Toyota is #1 in Australia with a very comprehensive line-up of models. Holden is #2 in sales & needs a better car in the mid-sized market. It isn't an extra model. It simply replaces the Epica. History will show the Epica to be a stop-gap model until GM rolled out the localised version of the Epsilon II Platform (think Opel Insignia). The Ellison II platform (which the Malibu is based on) was developed by Opel in Germany as GM?s mid-sized platform. Some reports even have an enlarged version as the basis of the next generation Commodore. Time will tell & this is still some years away. Still have to wait for the VF to come out in late 2013.

  • Two things here about appearances: 1. Most manufacturers will have various styling features carrying from one model to another. Think BMW & the Kidney Grille. Same goes for Audi?s & their grille. Nothing wrong with a bit of family resemblance. Perhaps the Malibu does look a little bit like a Calais (or a Cruze for that matter). All part of the grand plan. 2. Appearances in photographs can be very deceiving. When the VE Commodore came out, everyone said from the photos that it looked like the BA Falcon. Of course, in the flesh, it did not look the same. Same goes for the BA & FG Falcon. Everyone said they look the same. This is not the case. Final judgement on appearances of the Malibu should be reserved until it hits the street.

  • In the latest Wheels magazine, there is an article on the new Volkswagen Bulli. Named after a beach in NSW? Not quite. It is just one of many nicknames for the Volkswagen Type 2. You may know of it as the Kombi. The Type 1 was of course the Beetle.

Wild Man of Cyberspace Posted on 23 April 2011 7:34pm
  • Will they sell the Hybrid Malibu in Oz?

  • Introducing, the new Holden Camira!

Mr Seen of London, UK Posted on 22 April 2011 5:58pm
  • Since when was it the Australian way to consistently criticise? I believe Holden have the right mix to move forward; FWD for those who don't care about the driving dynamics and RWD for those who do. Anton, I'm a dad and I never have and never will own a FWD car. People, we need to get behind our local car industry, before we follow the path of the UK and the vehicle manufacturing sector dies completely. Support your fellow Australians and applaude the mother company support instead of attacking every decision it makes. Gordon, why does the name need to be Australian for a car that won't be built here? Actually, I can't think of a car that is built here with a uniquely Australian name!

MH of Adelaide Posted on 22 April 2011 5:28pm
  • It's a pity it looks so bland, especially compared to the Opel Insignia we should have gotten instead.

Jim C of Sydney Posted on 22 April 2011 12:54pm
  • They could have sold a S%#T load of these to members of the Perestroika political movement. But its not the 80's any more.

Alan Watson of Sydney Posted on 22 April 2011 11:33am
  • Car companies with extensive ranges appeal to more people. Greater appeal equals greater sales and profits. Anton from Northcote clearly hasn't looked at the Toyota range. They are number one, because they sell, Light Commercials, SUVs, Small, Medium and large cards and 4x4. GM Holden is doing the same in 2012. Barina, Cruze, Malibu, Commodore, Captiva, Colorado. Opel - Corsa, Astra, Insignia and maybe, Zafira and New Calibre. GM wants to be number 1 in Asia Pacific. GM Korea and China will allow Holden to offer the best range that they have had in decades. Bring it on.

Caulfield of Caulfield Posted on 22 April 2011 11:31am
  • What do you expect a car to look like JR? A no style jap crap? The rear of the malibu is Camaro inspired. And yes they have sold some police car caprices. To go with commodore exports to Brazil, the Gulf states and South Africa.

Linus L of Aus Posted on 22 April 2011 3:11am
  • Why is everybody carrying on about Holden adding Malibu to its rang. It relpaces Epica and will line up against Mondeo and Camry. .

    rentakeyboard Posted on 21 April 2011 6:38pm
  • Don't say too much JR you'll Bang Kok. OUCH

    Jake p Posted on 21 April 2011 6:24pm
  • Well I hope it great better then Camiera & Vectra. I glad this instead of the Europeans Insignia.

Bean Cartright Posted on 21 April 2011 6:03pm
  • Why call it the Malibu? This refers to a beach at Los Angeles! Surely if we have to have this car, we can have a more Australian name?

Gordon of Ayers Rock Posted on 21 April 2011 2:40pm
  • It looks like a Calais!!!! Is this the best that they can come up with.

JR of Bangkok Posted on 21 April 2011 2:28pm
  • Oh please! Holden is heading down the Hanenberger path again - too many models and too few sales. Also, Mr Reuss, Commodore and Falcons are mostly bought by fleets; the heartland may crow about 'rear-wheel drive' but the reality is that it is less and less of a concern to Mums and Dads. Economy is the key word today. With the dollar at $1.07 I'd say Reuss won't comment on export deals because there are none!!! Has Holden actually signed any orders for police cars for example? Ford may have problems but the reality is, Holden isn't too far behind.
