Hyundai's halo hero, the Genesis Coupe, has been officially launched in South Korea.

But it may be some time before it reaches Australia.

“At the moment it is only being produced in left-hand drive,” Hyundai Australia's Ben Hershman says. “We're anxious to convince head office the the Coupe is important to us here.

“It is the car that will show just how far Hyundai has come and how exciting the brand is.”

The replacement for the ageing Tiburon Coupe takes Hyundai into new territory with its rear-wheel-drive architecture and sports performance.

Powering the top end Coupe is an all-aluminium 231kW 3.8-litre DOHC V6, while at the entry level the engine is a 166kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four.

The V6 features dual continuously variable valve timing and with 361Nm of torque on tap the car will set behind a 0-100km/h sprint 6.3 seconds.

The V6 is mated to a six-speed ZF automatic. A six-speed manual is also available and features a short-stroke shifter, optimised gear ratios and triple cone synchronisers.

The optimised chassis makes for dynamic handling and more accurate steering. Dual MacPherson struts control the front and the rear has a five-link set-up. High strength steel give a stiffer, lighter body structure.

Safety fare is likely to include anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, six airbags and active headrests.

  • This car has potential. Good looking car for a Hyundai. Can just imagine it with some nice deep dish wheels and lowered. Would looks damn good. Will definitely give the 350Z with better value. What's best is it's rear wheel drive = Driftable :D

  • This would have to be the poorest of the poor mans sports cars. What a joke!

  • If you want to see what this car should look like google Genesis coupe HKS. You can see pics of the car with after-market HKS kit fitted. A fantastic little car and one for my garage when they eventually do come to Aus. Over 300hp of RWD fun!

  • I just read that the sedan in America will have Lexicon sound as an option! That's intense. It looks like they're gearing to be on parity with Lexus and Infiniti over there.

  • I agree that correctly priced the Genesis could sell very well. Looks good inside and out and performance seems pretty good. Can't wait to see further specs. and costing. Barry Canberra

  • Don't get to exited, it is only a Hyundai.

  • Correctly priced that coupe could sell very well. Since the demise of the 200sx, there's been a real lack of an affordable rear wheel drive coupe in Australia.

  • V36 Skyline anybody? It looks and sounds very similar to the 370GT or the G37. I've read there's a V8 version out there in the States too.

  • I'm impressed with Hyundai - this looks like a ripper. And 231kW from a 3.8L, very nice.
