Korean car sales boom

Australians are falling in love with Korean cars.

An accelerating Korean auto industry is now within a car's length of equalling sales of our home-grown models.  According to the official car sales figures for October released last week Korean vehicle sales in Australia were up 80 per cent compared to October 2008 and up 23 per cent for the year so far compared to the same period in 2008.

Sales of Korean-made cars (12,324) nearly equalled the total sales of all Australian manufacturers (12,822) for the month.  Nearly 20,000 more Korean-made cars have been sold in Australia this year than in the same time last year.  By comparison, locally-built cars are down by 24,594 units, a drop of 17 per cent.

Hyundai is leading the way, recording its best-ever October result in Australia, up by 106 per cent over October 2008, and is our fourth biggest-selling carmaker behind Toyota, Holden and Ford.  It's not only Hyundai and Kia that are raising the profile of Korea.

The Holden-badged models of Captiva, Cruze, Barina, Viva and Epica are made by GM-Daewoo in Korea. The Renault Koleos is made by Samsung in Korea and Ssangyong SUVs are from a Korean plant.  About 39 per cent of light cars sold in Australia, 27 per cent of small cars and 26 per cent of medium-sized SUVs - including Australia's most popular SUV, the Holden Captiva - are built in Korea.

A Hyundai spokesman said: "We are now on the shopping list. There was a time when we weren't but we have won awards - such as the Carsguide Car of the Year in 2007 - which has made people really notice us.  We didn't take our foot off the accelerator when the recession started late last year.  We didn't reduce production and we didn't spend less on marketing. That worked in our favour because people saw us as being constant."

Overall car sales in Australia were up in October for the first time in 16 months.  Improvements were across the board covering private, business and rental buyers.  Sales of vans and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) were particularly strong.

And the situation is set to improve when import tariffs drop 5 per cent from January 1.  Some importers, including Mazda and Subaru, have already passed on savings.

  • Korean cars are great like Hyundai, they are well built like my 2005 Hyundai Sonata has 230,000kms and hasn't missed a beat. I recommend Korean cars, although I do not like Daewoo they are also not very popular in Korea. Korea also has LG, SAMSUNG Korea has come along way over the years its taking over Japan's technology.

  • cheap white good crap. Had a Hyundai for six years and it started to rust. Holden needs to get rid of the Korean crap. Soon people will be loving Chinese rubbish.

  • Gotta laugh at comments such as "I would not own a Korean made piece of crap, they are throw away items made to wear out." The same thing was said about Jap cars years ago. Meanwhile I ran up 420,000 trouble free kilometres in my Jap built Holden Barina.

  • I bought my Granduar over 2 years ago, it is a 01 car and although it was 6 years old it had only 63,000 Klms on the clock. What amazed me was the level of equipment it had for a new price of $40,000 plus suberb panel fit and no filmsy interior fittings. I love driving this car it has never let me down, better than the Falcon I had.

  • I would not own a Korean made piece of crap, they are throw away items made to wear out.I used to be a Holden man until 1980 then they lost me.I simply settle on Toyota now days, reliable and hold their value.

  • It just goes to show that people are gullible when they will buy a car based on price - not quality.

  • I got my first hyundai in 92 and havent owned any other marque since. No other car seller had a 3 year warranty then. I was going to keep it for the length of the waaranty but I kept it for 7 years because it was troublefree. I bought the next one when they offered the five year warranty. My 99 hyundai got rolled in 2000 by an old idiot who crashed into me and I got out and walked away. Needless to say say I replaced it with another hyundai. reliable and extremely good value for money.

  • Holden have proved they made the right decision going Korean, the Captiva is now the biggest selling SUV in Australia and Holden is about to launch another 5-seater Captiva model at $27,990 drive-away which is going to blitz the market, and the Cruze small car is now rivalling the Mazda3 in sales and will soon catch the Corolla in sales when the hatch arrives in the middle of next year. Go Holden !

  • As a proud i30 owner and a first time Hyundai owner, it's no wonder why Hyundai's becoming more popular around the world. My next purchase will definitely be a Hyundai.
