Designed by an Italian based in California, built in Korea and very specifically adapted for Australian conditions...

... that’s Kia’s third generation Sportage soft roader, which goes on sale this week.

Priced from $25,990 for the entry-level Si front-wheel-drive manual with a 2.0-litre petrol engine up to $38,990 for the range-topping Platinum AWD diesel, the Sportage is longer, wider, lower and an altogether slicker package than the model it replaces, one that was so mundane as to be considered a weapon of those who advocate public transport.

The new one is up against a formidable and growing array of “C-segment” SUVs including Volkswagen’s Tiguan, Nissan’s Dualis, Hyundai’s ix35, Holden’s Korean-made Captiva, Mitsubishi’s new ASX and the stalwart Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V.

Derived from the Kue concept, the visually striking Sportage is designed Massimo Frascella, it features the corporate grille and accents that have become increasingly familiar under the direction charted by chief designer Peter Schreyer. But as Kia Australia marketing boss Steve Watt said of the locally-released range, the “focus is on ride quality to match the design”.

Unprecedentedly, the Australian version of the Sportage receives a unique suspension and steering set-up adapted from the British version and refined over 1700km of testing by a team including former Toyota dynamics guru Graeme Gambold. The mid and top spec versions also receive a new AWD system from Magna Dynamax that uses electro-hydraulic sensors to activate a coupling, multi-clutch drive to feed power to the wheels with the most traction at any given time.

Watt said this dynamic package was the primary difference between the Sportage and Hyundai’s closely-related ix35. And Kia Motors Australia CEO MK Kim said forthcoming Kia’s would receive the same treatement: “Sportage is the first of our new generation cars to benefit from the determination to deliver Australian flavour. It will not be the last.”

The value equation is compelling. The front-wheel-drive Si manual with its 122kW/197Nm 2.0-litre starts at $25,990 for the five speed manual ($1000 under the Ix35). The six speed auto adds $2,000. It’s no stripper, with equipment including 17-inch alloys, front fog lamps, and the full safety package including six airbags.

The mid–spec SLi runs a 130kW/227Nm 2.4-litre petrol engine ($31,990) or a 2.0-litre turbo diesel ($34,990) through a six speed auto. Its gains on the Si include chrome accents, leather trim, rear view camera and roof rails. The Platinum uses the same drivetrains (petrol $35,990; diesel $38,990) and adds full leather, daytime running lights, smart key and ventilated driver’s seat.

  • Specs say the Sportage comes with cruise control, so Lorry Rotten of NSW, who apparently just bought one and can't find it, keep looking. But by the looks of your post (things keep falling off, yeah right) you're a disgruntled Lada owner.

  • Not happy with my Sportage, I thought all cars came with cruise control and central locking but a Kia doesnt. Cosmetically things keep falling off and out, the radio sounds awful its so tinny and most of the time you cant adjust the volume, I find it very heavy on petrol

  • Small car dude and a small brain to go with it it seems... I wonder what else is small with you? Typical badge snob! I just took delivery of my Diesel Platinum, best car yet for me ever and best value I have ever got for my $$. And that is above the Audi I also own!

  • Yay that look cool. So glad to recommend Hyundai and Kia to friends and family without getting abused. Such a fundamental improvement. I rather recommend these over any bland Toyota. I would not have even look at them several years back.

  • Small car dude did you say crappy quality? You're a clown if you believe that. This company and its parent company Hyundai have come ahead in leaps and bounds while you've been at kindy. Hyundai have just topped the Germans in their own country for customer satisfaction and have done the same thing here in Australia. You need to get with the times instead of putting up ignorant tripe kiddo.

  • Small-car-dude. Thats seems to be the typical attitude for most of us in Australia "it must be a shocking drive and crap quality because it is a Hyundai/Kia"; in the mean time thousands of "high quality" Holden Commodores find willing buyers every month. Being in the auto trade I get the opportunity to drive many brands and the latest Korean vehicles are every bit as good as the Japanese ones while being cheaper and better specced...

  • Yet another decent-looking kia... pity that i know already that its gonna be a shocking drive and crappy quality... it is still a Kia. And Greg, I reckon that the current range of Audis look fantastic. They're all well proportioned, stylish, modern and sleek. Sure, they're a little conservative, but they arent targetting the same people as Kia, remember... And as for this article... well i think whoever writes these columns needs to brush up on their car knowledge - surely you can't think that the CR-V and Rav-4 are in the same category as cars like the Mitsu ASX????? otherwise that would mean that Mitsubishi would be rivalling their own car - the Outlander, which is roughly the same size and price as the RAV4 and CRV... no, the ASX (along with ix35, dualis and tiguan) is MUCH smaller than a CR-V or Rav-4!

  • Great looking car from Kia. I like the way they are using the talents from around the world to make a desirable package. It surprises me that its designed by an Italian but whats happened to Audi because they look boring and Dasilva is in charge there which proves that not all exciting design comes from Italians. Anyway, great job Kia your actually tempting me.
