It’s our last day in America before we flee across the Atlantic to start Leg 2 in Ireland. What a culture shock that will be. To the remote Irish countryside from the once notorious streets of America’s music and style capital.
We’ve brought the Fiestas to the Bronx because this is Funkmaster Flex’s ‘hood. For 20 years Flex has been New York’s top DJ on Hot 97. Two million people a week listen to him. He is also the guy the rap and R n B world turn to when it comes to cars. His friends include P Diddy and 50 Cent. Flex really does pimp the stars’ rides. He also has touring car shows featuring cars belonging to the likes of Wyclef Jean and Missy Elliott.
His garage in the Bronx is crammed full with lovingly restored American muscle cars. Mustangs, GTOs…you name it. Detroit’s biggest iron is in there.
Flex has a show on MTV in the US. And as a prize he agreed to pimp a new Ford Fiesta. Almost a quarter of a million people entered. And the winner was a lady from the New York neighbourhood of Brooklyn.
“I’m not sure if I want to hand it over now,” says Flex who specced a hot yellow with a white stripe, white rally wheels, leather seats with white piping and a tweaked sound system (“nothing to wake the neighbours but good enough to make anyone inside have a good time”).
Flex was bowled over that we were taking the Fiesta global. “Man, a road trip is a cool thing. But you need some advice on some tunes. For a classic I’d say some Run DMC. And for something new, some Nikki Manij. In fact she’d love this car. She likes bright things…
“Boy I’d like to have been in Vegas with you guys. That’s a place to drive and play some good music.”
