The latest line-up have improved over previous Grand Cherokees.

THE much-anticipated diesel Grand Cherokee has joined the Jeep ranks in Australia.

Running a three litre engine producing 177kW and 550Nm of torque, the oil-burning Grands for 2011 start at $50,000 for a Laredo, running up to $69,500 for the top-of-the-tree Overland.

Built by VM Motori and developed together with Fiat, the V6 is mated to a five-speed auto, claimed to be more fuel efficient (combined cycle 8.3 l/100km) than its predecessor and will tow up to 3500kg.

"It's the icing on the cake of the all-new Grand Cherokee range," says Chrysler Australia's marketing and communications manager Dean Bonthorne.

Some customers have been waiting up to six months for the arrival of this diesel version to join the 3.6 litre V6 petrol and 5.7 litre V8 petrol versions in a range of Jeeps attracting consumer and critical attention.

Pricing, build quality and refinement on this latest line-up have improved over previous Grand Cherokees, thanks to new drive from Detroit and Chrysler Australia to capture more of the healthy local SUV market.

The new diesel version could become the star of the Grand Cherokee wagons; a recent run over sand trails and beaches showed up a very flexible and willing engine and transmission in a capable and comfortable machine sitting on air suspension.

But still to come is the gravel-crushing SRT8 version; due here mid-2012 with 364kW of Hemi V8 up front).

  • These will outdo any 4x4 on the market at the moment.

  • The three year resale is 61% on the petrol, I expect the diesel to be higher. Pretty good for an SUV.

  • What will the resale be for the Grand Cherokee? In the past they have not done too well, I am considering buying one based on all the reviews but dont want to lose out when time to sell in 3 years?

  • After watching a mates Jeep Commander fall apart (LITERALLY every plastic external fitting has come off including the rear bumper) after 45,000 km I doubt there is any reliability in the latest models either, especially when you consider the Commander was supposed to be the cream of their vehicles when it was offered for sale. By the way, the vehicle I am talking of was and still has never been off-road in its life, it was purchased for its towing capacity which it does very well, just a pity the rest of the vehicle can't handle our roads in QLD.

  • But what about the notorious Jeep name for poor quality, plus extremely expensive, and non-existent parts? This new model would have to be a quantum leap over previous Jeep models with cheap plastic everywhere, poor fit, agricultural finish, and problems such as brakes (pads & rotors) totally worn out in 60,000 kms. Jeep spent years bragging about being the cheapest car builder in the U.S., and it certainly showed in all their models. The only thing that is helping Jeep sales is the bottom falling out of the U.S. dollar, not any major leap in build quality, finish, or advanced engineering. You can guarantee this new engine has every cent possible, shaved off its construction costs. That means an engine that isn't durable for the long run. I'll buy a Jeep when I see one that's been flogged for 400,000 over outback roads and still runs well, like many working Toyota LandCruisers show. I'll buy a Jeep when I see one on a mine site or construction site, not being used all its life as Mothers Toorak Taxi, for shopping.

  • This thing is awesome, makes Territory look underdone.
