Israel slams Holden’s SS badge

  • image

The SS badge on the Holden Commodore Chevrolet version has sparked a Nazi memory in Israel.

The SS (Super Sport) name for the Holden Commodore rebadged as a Chevrolet has been condemned by a Hebrew newspaper as having a Nazi reference -- and threatened with being banned from entry.

A report in The Times of Israel quotes Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth slamming the badging because of association with the notorious Nazi SS unit led by Heinrich Himmler under Adolf Hitler’s reign of terror across Europe.

According to the report, the name was critised by Barach Shuv -- a manager of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and chairman of the Organization of Partisans, Underground Fighters and Ghetto Rebels.

“The use of this name is very inappropriate,” Shuv is cited as saying in the Yedioth story. “It is not a name that will bring them pride or success.”

Chevrolet has previously used the full name Super Sport, and this is the first time the abbreviation has been used as a Chev badge – although it’s been seen on Holdens for decades. There have been no instances of official Jewish criticism in Australia of the Holden name during that time.

However it’s not the first car name with an unintended wartime association. The Toyota Avalon was planned to be called the Centaur until it was pointed out that was the name of an Aussie hospital ship sunk by the Japanese during World War II.

And few people would criticise the Volkswagen badge, despite the name coming from the ‘folks wagon’ vehicle born as part of Hitler’s Nazi policy.

  • Where was this bloke back In the sixties that's how long the SS badge has been around.Taking political correctness to a new level of stupidity.

  • There is a strong Zionist political wing in Israel,America,Australia,Britain and pretty much were ever a Jewish person lives who are responsible for reminding the world about how the Jews were killed and by who. You don't see the Russian's complaining about the SS symbol even though 20 million or more died at the hands of the Nazi's. No but Israel's improtant, their view is that no one is allowed to forget. If I were an Israeli I would'nt want to get into the press about little things like this because if there is any nation that should be put under the microscope, it's Israel. The war crimes that Israel commits against the original inhabitants of Palestine on a day to day basis constitutes a war crime in it's self. On top of that, the amount of women and children that the Zionist government of Israel have bombed over the last 10 years is a disgrace. If Holden changes their SS symbol then Israel should give back Palestine to the Palestinians.

  • Its unbelievable that we now live in a world where people are trying so hard to find something to complain about that they see the letters “SS” on a sports car made in 2013, built in Australia for enjoyment and relate it to the Nazi regime, I mean for crying out loud GM is an American company, their country lost 100s of thousands of lives fighting the Nazis, and freed the Jews… If the statement wasn’t made by a Jew and the topic wasn’t religious war crimes, the man would be called an idiot for comparing two things that are so different!!

  • The Chevy Camaro SS, Chevelle SS, Impala SS, Commadore SS. Lot of cars bearing the SS badge over a lot of years. These buggers need a hobby.

  • These are the same people who turn a blind eye when it comes to bulldozing peoples homes with US money who cant fight back cause they sanction their government funds for trying to join the UN. Oh wait the holo...wha? But their fighting for a car name to be changed?

    overthem Posted on 23 February 2013 8:13pm
  • Actually, the SS badge has appeared on several Chevrolets in recent times. Between 1994 and 1996, Chevrolet produced a model called the "Impala SS" which was based on the Caprice. From 2000 to 2007, on the Monte Carlo SS coupe, and from 2004 to 2008, on the Impala SS sedan.

David Zyk of Melbourne, Australia Posted on 23 February 2013 6:05pm
  • what about the camaro SS, Impala SS, chevelle SS. The SS badge/name have been on Chevy cars since the 60's. i thnk they have sold pretty well and that a name as iconic as it is wont change because of the minority of people the disagree with it

Adam Burhop of QLD Posted on 23 February 2013 12:11pm
  • Over the top sensitivity. "SS" has proven to be popularly recognised in Australia for years and will do so in the USA.

Pile Iton of Richmond Posted on 23 February 2013 11:02am
  • Maybe he should be more concerned about illegal settlements on the West Bank and the systemic geonocide of Palestinians in thier own country instead of what badge adorns a car

fastcraig of Darwin Posted on 23 February 2013 10:36am
  • What utter nonsense. Jewish/Australians don't seem to have the hyper sensitivity of some in Israel thankfully. In truth I bet the writer in question is a nut job anyway who in no way reflects general opinion

bob of Southport Posted on 23 February 2013 8:37am
  • So they have had no complaints for the 25 odd years that the model name has been around...I am all for Holocaust sensitivities, but they missed the boat on being outraged on this one, methinks.

  • re last post: I meant to say SS means "Super Sport'. Sorry, it's late!

Miles Marriott of Australia Posted on 22 February 2013 11:54pm
  • The 'SS' badge stands for Sports Special and has graced GM cars both in Australia and the US since the mid sixties. The complaint is around 50 years too late.

Miles of Australia Posted on 22 February 2013 11:41pm
  • The badge goes right back to the 1971 HQ Monaro Holden in Australia, which in turn, aped the SS badges (Sports Special) from the hundreds of thousands of (owner) US GM cars sold from the Impala to El Camino. I assume this was a semi-newsworthy grab from a small-town newspaper and does not represent the views of any Israeli (or German, or Australian) with even a vague knowledge of muscle car history.

Miles of Australia Posted on 22 February 2013 11:35pm
  • this is a disgrace, i'm disgusted at this attempt to further degrade jews. holden should make a public apology

tony eaton Posted on 22 February 2013 10:33pm
  • Holden has used the "SS"badge for over 40 years so why now has this minority group come out of the shadows, is it because of the USA connection, news for them Chev has been using it long before Holden ever used did, have a look at the Camaro SS. These people should not forget their past but they do need to get back in their box sometimes and let ours live as well.

  • Talk about too sensitive and just stirring for the sake of a headline with a Jewish reference..

Maz of Earth Posted on 22 February 2013 7:49pm
  • So now the two letters SS are now off limits? Really it's time to get over yourselves Israel. We all know the Nazis did horrible things and we shouldn't forget it. Question...how many Jews drive Mercedes' and BMW'?

    0bserv3r of Australia Posted on 22 February 2013 6:38pm
  • Being a keen student of military history and actually having visited Yad Vashem myself, I understand the horrible history associated with the SS initials for the Jewish people, but this seems like just having a whinge. Does he want to complain about the guy in my street named Adolph too? Why does he only have a problem with the SS label now that it's in use the USA? Sorry Mr Shuv, you are making it offensive to yourself. It's an automobile, not a Nazi figurehead. You can't label something offensive because of such a small link - otherwise our Yankee friends would no longer use 911 as their emergency number.

Taylor of QLD Posted on 22 February 2013 5:59pm
  • my initials are ss - does that mean i'm a nazi too?

sandra stanley Posted on 22 February 2013 5:35pm
  • Aw, c'mon people! Cant we all just get on with our lives without having to point out that two simple letters means that a vehicle manufacturer from Australia is somehow linked the actions of a deranged German psychopath from 80 years ago? Now, if Holden named their car the " Holden Super Swastika Golden Eagle Adolf Cruiser Mk 3" i would show some concern. But its not, SS in this context means Super Sport, so get over it!

Phil of Somewhere. Posted on 22 February 2013 5:31pm

phill of brisbane Posted on 22 February 2013 5:24pm
  • The Commodore is far from being the 1st or even only car badged with SS, Chevy has been doing the Camaro for years with an SS on it, Jaguar was originally SS If Israel did its research properly they would know this, and no I am not a Commodore driver nor am I a fan of it but they are being picked on unfairly.

HMMMM of Australia Posted on 22 February 2013 5:22pm
  • What happens if you're initials are SS ? Is this offensive also. To be honest Israel offends me, so where can I complain. Grow up Jews.

Michael of Adelaide Posted on 22 February 2013 4:16pm
  • Please check your facts instead of making things up; "Chevrolet has previously used the full name Super Sport, and this is the first time the abbreviation has been used as a Chev badge" is totally and absolutely wrong, a quick Google search will show you how many Chev "SS" badges there have been. Don't reporters do research any more? Maybe you should go write for the Womens' Weekly!

Annoyed of Motoring Enthusiast Posted on 22 February 2013 4:11pm
  • The Chevrolet Impala SS was released in 1961, that’s 52 years ago by my reckoning. Since then, the SS badge has been used on Chevrolet’s Camaro, Caprice, Cobalt, HHR, Impala, Lumina, Malibu, Chevelle, El Camino, Nova and Monte Carlo, as well as a range of “trucks” like the Silverado, S10 and TrailBlazer. Holden first used the badge on a Monaro in 1974 and have used it on Monaros, Toranas and many many Commodores ever since. And now it is offensive? Give me a break! Any connection between GM/Chevrolet/Holden and the Nazis is a very long bow to draw.

Rod Collins of Holden SS Country Posted on 22 February 2013 4:04pm
  • If it was a military vehicle he may have a point, but a sports car, using an abbreviation? He is drawing a long bow there. Sorry, am I allowed to say long bow? As it was a weapon used against lessor equiped people. Oh no, I said weapon. And, that may offend someone who has had one used against them. When will this madness end?

Leo of Priest Gully Posted on 22 February 2013 3:52pm
  • These sort of people need to move on with their lives! Until they do, how will they find happiness? Its a car badge that many in another country looks at with pride and longing to own. How about we look on it as that ??? Instead of dredging up old wounds and giving them airtime. Can I have my 5 minutes back that I wasted on such a stupid topic...........

Dillon of Australia Posted on 22 February 2013 3:44pm
  • Just they wait till the Holden Holocaust is released! Morons. Seems Hitler had it wrong, the jews are not an insidious ILTELLIGENT pest after all!

You Mustbejoking of The real world Posted on 22 February 2013 3:22pm
  • Morons! The "Super Sport" badge has been used by MANY car and motorcycle manufactures (including Holden, Chevrolet, Bugatti, Ferrari, Ducati, and more), all over the word, for DECADES! No one with half a brain would have ever associated it with Nazi Germany, until now of course! This is as stupid as when Atlanta renamed the 'yellow line' used on train platforms to keep people a safe distance back because a 'concerned citizens group' decided it was racist! If you stare at clouds long enough, you will eventually see whatever you mind wants you to see... the same is true of people who go out of their way, looking for things to be offended by!

James of Sydney Posted on 22 February 2013 3:15pm
  • Maybe if they had done it as lightning bolts then it would add credibility to the condemnation.

Paul of Australia Posted on 22 February 2013 3:07pm

  • it annoys me that there are actually people in the world that are that stupid and narrow minded that they will see an assosiation like that... are you serious? your going to to see the abreviated "ss" badge refering to a "Super Sport" on the back of a sports vehicle which is designed for fun, then assosiate it with the Nazi "SS" unit... I wonder what the world is coming to, if this wasnt a racial war crime issue this man would be called an idiot. this comment has nothing to do with what happened in WW2, just my feelings on how people these days will find anything to complain about, even if its that far fetched.

Ryan of perth Posted on 22 February 2013 12:16pm
