Hyundai Genesis Coupe unleashed

A sort of phosphorus avocado green flash screeches out of the dark hanger at Hunter Valley Airport.

It’s a car that’s not supposed to be in this country.

Yet only days after its sibling appeared at the Melbourne Motor Show, here’s another Hyundai Genesis, with a guttural 231kW/361Nm 3.8-litre V6 aboard. This one isn’t pristine and stationary on a podium.

No, this one’s laying a gust of burning rubber. A black-clad, impenetrably visored driver Hyundai are cheekily calling ”The Stag” peels what is by leagues of magnitude the most exciting car to emerge from Korea through a course of orange cones set up on the runway’s apron.

We lucky hacks get a passenger’s insight into the agility and chuckability of this instantly desirable rear-wheel-drive coupe.

With production underway in left-hand-drive only the Genesis is available in cack-hand territories. In the US - where’s it’s very much a competitor for the Infiniti G37 coupe that Nissan Australia will not bring here (it’s a grey import favourite) - the Hyundai is winning raves and awards.

So it seems an act of unusual cruelty to torture poor fellows with a tantalising taste of a toy we won’t have the chance to play with it.

Or will we?

“One thing I’ve learned in four-and-a-half years at Hyundai is never say never,” senior communications manager Ben Hershman told Carsguide.

“This is why we bought them here. They’re our cars. We’re going to do a series of promotions like this to gauge reaction.”

As to Australia’s realistic expectations of getting the Genesis, Hershman says: “We weren’t going to get the i20 (city car) either and now we’re launching it here later this year.”

Frankly, we must have this car. Not only does it look and sound stirring to a disturbing degree, no-one’s bringing anything quite like it to our part of the world.

And if Hyundai could price it at WRX or Ralliart money, or even not to the distant north of that, they would surely sell each and every one they could source.

  • Bring them now, with the turbo-four option please, though i will settle for the torquey V6. Rhys Millen is currently running a genesis V6 in the Formula Drift championship in America, still naturally aspirated and only mildly stroked to get 600hp from this engine. bring. it. now.

  • If Hyundai is serious about selling cars in Australia then Hyundai must build right hand Genesis Coups for us to buy, I want a 380 GT with Brown leather interior. Regards from Paul.

  • Looks like something sat on the bonnet. Every other angle looks pretty good though. Will reserve judgment till we've got more than pics and the spec sheet to go on.

  • At the moment I have a Civic Type R which is a great little car, but going on what I've googled so far on the Genisis, it does sound and look impressive, I'd consider trade up.

  • I've been watching these cars on the internet for the last 12 months. Before they even went into production they had a cult following. Google Genisis Coupe HKS to see it in a Hyundai approved aftermarket body kit that look stunning. Forget the turbo4 version, V6 with over 300hp, RWD... I'll have a red one thanks Hyundai.

    I want one Posted on 15 March 2009 4:23pm
  • Hooray!! Where have I heard all of this before? Oh that's right, Hyundai S Coupe, Coupe and Tiburon. Each of these were touted by the media as the next Celica,Z Car etc. What does this car do that the Nissan 350/370 Z doesn't do? Nothing I'll bet. In this market segment good credentials are everything and good credentials aren't built or bought, they are EARNT. This new Hyundai may be good and hopefully it will be substantially less than a 370Z ,but it needs to earn it's stripes before you media guys go into raptures over it.

  • In the bible ‘Genesis’ is the beginning – hence the name, hence this is the start of something new for Hyundai to move away from the old image it has. Looks great – well done Hyundai

  • More importantly it goes to distance Hyundai from the late 1980's/early 1990's Excels. It changes people's opinions of Hyundai, as now Hyundai have been producing very good cars for a few years... unfortunately public opinion has still lagged behind in Australia. The i30 is an example of this, hailed as a very good car, yet, still many fewer of them on the road as Corolla/ Mazda 3 etc.
