The halo car of the E2 line at Holden Special Vehicles has become a bit of a devil.

The hotrod GTS is a waiting-list proposition despite an $82,990 starting price, with demand creating a delay in production. "If you want a GTS with red leather and big-piston brakes our waiting list is out to April next year. We can't keep pace with demand," says Phil Harding. "We haloed that car and it's doing well as a halo. A lot of customers who are picking the car up are pleased with the differential now with the ClubSport and R8. And GTS is now almost running at 100 per cent with the big-piston brakes.

Harding says the reaction to the in-your-face styling of the E2 models has been entirely positive, despite some early attacks on a front-end that borrowed heavily from the American Pontiac G8. "We have had no negative feedback whatever. It's distinctive on the road. We're not having any problems at all with the styling," he says.

  • My girlfriend went from a BMW to a commodore, and while her and I liked the BMW, the commodore is a far better car for the money. M3's are very good but the rest of the BMW's are pretty plain and boring.

  • Well I sold my VY series 2 V8 Calais, bought a SAAB because it seemed responsible what with the fuel crisis and all. On the road home I thought "what I have I done". Drove an E2 GTS and wow, great shebang etc. Sure the interior is a bit commodore-ish, but it does have some gauges extra. I agree it should have GPS or satnav standard. The seats are great though. If it cost me a drop to 55% in 3 years (Red Book) that's a lot less dollars than BMW AUDI and JAG and MERC which have pretty much the same drops in percentage over the three years. What I do not ghet is all the comments about the manual gearbox. Drives like a dream, changes are pretty slick, maybe a bit too close though. Can be punted along around 35-45 in 4th in traffic. Whatta yawant?

  • Looks great, some colours work better than others. I can see you there is such a waiting list. PS, The 2nd hand BWW would not keep up with the GTS in so many ways. Love the scoops - everyone loves the ones on the Monaro - it was time the tough VE had some too

  • $83,000 + for a Holden. I will pass on that You can pick up a 2nd hand BMW 335i with about 20,000kms on the clock for the same price.

  • No negative comments from those actually ordering the car... what a surprise. I don't totally dislike the E2, but after seeing it in the flesh, will keep my E1 for a while yet. As for the waiting list, how is it then, that I had a choice of 4 GTS' from just 3 dealers?? All with immediate delivery.

  • As ugly as this car is, atleast Holden and HSV have stopped using the bonnet scoops they stole from the Plymouth Cuda.

  • Hey guys, the GTS starts at $80,990 for a manual with the auto being a $2,000 option. The public reaction to the car has been brilliant. Please build more of them so I can make people happy.

  • The "American" Pontiac G8, which this story says the E2's borrowed its styling from, is actually made here in Australia by Holden, so they're borrowing their own design? With the GM-woes and collapse of the Holdens-exported-as-Pontiacs deal, they will likely have a stockpile of G8-style parts.

  • A waiting list. Waiting to lose a fortune. I just sold my '06 model and found out what the resale value is, or should I say isn't.
