Holden VE Commodore ute recall

Holden says that until the fix can be made to each vehicle, customers are encouraged to secure loose items in the cargo tray.

A Carsguide investigation has led to a major safety recall for the Holden VE Commodore ute.

The utes are subject to the recall over a latching problem with their tailgate first flagged by a Carsguide reader. A total of 34,379 vehicles are involved and will have their vehicle's tailgate latches replaced, a job which Holden says should take less than 30 minutes.

Carsguide was alerted to the drama by Brendan Wilson, the owner of a VE ute, who reported tailgate on his car and the identical vehicle of his business partner were coming unlatched. Even a loan vehicle from his Holden dealership had the same problem. He first noticed the problem after loading a ute with his tools, when the tailgate sprung open. But there was no help from his dealership, "just excuses", he says.

"The best  excuse of all was if I was going to load the ute up I should put a rope around the tailgate," Wilson says. He was also concerned that Holden was not aware of the problem or the potential danger of an unlatched tailgate.

"Obviously Holden Australia are unaware of the problem as I believe, given the nature and possible dangers, they would have done a recall."

Carsguide reported his experience to Holden, which began an investigation and now admits a shortcoming in the VE ute.

"The results of our investigation tell us that the likelihood of a tailgate becoming unlatched is low, but we will always err on the side of caution and administer a recall to ensure customer satisfaction and safety," says Holden's director of warranty engineer, customer satisfaction and quality, Craig Porritt. He says the unlatching can occur because of pressure against the tailgate and Holden advises owners to be careful when loading their utes. Holden says that using one of its tonneau covers, either hard or soft, prevents the 'condition' from occuring on the ute.

"If a vehicle does not have a tonneau cover, we reccommend owners do not load items against the tailgate until the fix has been made," Porritt says. "Until the fix can be made to each vehicle, we ask our customers to continue to secure loose items in the cargo tray as recommended in the owner's manual and use a Holden tonneau cover where possible."

The ute recall is the latest in a number of successes by the Carsguide investigative team, stretching back to engine problems with Holden's Gen III V8. The engines used excessive amounts of oil, leading to failures, and Holden was forced to repair or replace many V8s fitted to VT Commodores.

  • Jason, your comments are all untruths so please just shut up because Fords outclass any Holden.

  • To all the guys here saying *my mate* that’s your mate, not you. Don’t post input on a car unless YOU have owned it. Your input is not valid and is not wanted. Tell *your mate* to come post his opinion on the car because your focusing on the bad. Just a slight case of ‘Chinese Whispers’. Also I have a 2007 VE SV6 ute - no tailgate issues but then again mines got a hard top (also got a soft top) but I have never had any brake/electrical issues as well. Oh and PS. to the guy whose mate can’t get a bike in the back. TRY AGAIN, cause I seem to be able to fit my mates road bike in mine rather easily ... NOW let’s wait for the hate comments :D

  • Just bough the 2010 SS VE ute and have never had one before. Ilike it and if I am going to have a premature death, this is where it is going to happen ha ha! No, seriously it gets great economy unless you have a lead foot - then it can chew the juice, drives quite good and has a kick ass stereo and it looks great!

  • Has anybody received a recall notice yet? I got a letter a few months back telling me of the problem, but still no recall letter? I've got 120,000k's on my SS V ute with no problems ever. Best ute I've ever owned.

  • Has any one had problems with indicators either jamming on or just not working as I have with my VE ute at the moment only 57,000 kms.

  • I have VE SS Sportswagon. Nice to drive, plenty of power, but brakes never good from Day 1. Bought upgrade package for $1800 off Ebay, fitted by local garage, end of problem. Some minor electricals fixed by dealer, bought this car because there is no alternative. Reasonably economical considering engine size and weight. Great cruiser.

  • The worst car I have ever owned... VE Ute. Holden don't know how to make a vehicle (ie. utility) that can actually be used for work without things breaking or falling off. Electrical issues from day 1, engine misfire (20k), crap brakes, cheap suspension. Don't drive on dirt or haul roads, it will self destruct!

  • I have no idea why any 'tradie' would even buy a Commodore ute, they are what we call a 'pretty boy ute'. Coil spings and a single piece body = unable carry a decent weight. I had a friend who bought an SS ute, tried to put his moto in the back only to discover that it just wasn't gonna happen, he now owns an FG XR6.... which carries his moto drama free. It makes no sense at all to buy a Commodore ute, when it can't even be used as a ute.

  • Most intelligent post there Conor. You clearly know what your talking about. The whole grunting fords sucks no holden sucks show's great maturity. F6 is good but V8 muscle is best and HSV has the muscle. tell him to hold off for coyotye and stay with proper muscle

  • I have seen that many utes and have spoken to quite alot of customers, none of them have had or seen anything of this nature. It sounds to me that this guy is using load on his story about rope around the tailgate or the dealer suggested this until they get tech support involved. The dealers hands are tied when it comes to things like this, (ALL) of them can't do anything until they are sure they will get paid for the work they do. I'm looking at one right now and have pulled and pulled on the tail gate and nothing???????? Oh year I have been on holidays

Holden Mad of Brighton Posted on 16 July 2010 10:54am
  • big call wazza not one i agree with though. I have a lot of experience with VE's and have found them to be of quite good quality. Sounds like your mate got a lemon going to Ford won't fix that problem they got there share of lemons too as well as their share of trouble free cars.

jason of melb Posted on 15 July 2010 10:09am
  • The VE is a lemon....my mates got an SS and he's had nothing but problems with the thing......He is a bit of a Holden boy and think'in about switchin camps...."mate" i said to him "go for it" you wont be sorry that you did!!!!!!

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 15 July 2010 9:46am
  • Just imagine if it was just something trivial like engine accelerator or brakes playing up we would hardly even hear about it.

jason of melb Posted on 14 July 2010 9:54am
  • I could say so many things here but I won't. Every car manufacturer has recalls. Just a shame that owners can't safely use their car for what it was designed for...

    shaun Posted on 14 July 2010 9:13am
  • My partner has this ute. We put rubber mats down so the stuff in the back wouldn't move around.
