Is Holden's VE Commodore a World Car?
Bullet
Holden will always produce poor clunky piles of metal that Australia loves to put up with just for the sake of being "better" than a ford... Bring on the European and Japanese class!
Grant
Is this article a joke? To me it doesn't even beat its direct competition locally. Yes it has its good points, but world class? Hmm, I don't think so!
Rod
The VE deserves to win! I hired a VE Commodore before I knew anything about it,. It was just such fun to drive, they have beaten the Europeans at their own game, the precise steering & ESP implementation is near perfect as is the driving position - the high price of the Audi & BMW sedans cannot be justified by a large margin.
Robert Jefferies
You have got to be kidding. This is a joke right. The VE a world car.In the minds of the spin doctors that reside in the Holden marketing department it may be,but int he real world it is no where near it (two recalls in two months proves that). Also why does everyone keep calling this an Australian car,yes it was designed here but it is made up a hodge podge of components
the world wide GM parts bin like the transmissons and engines.GM is American as apple pie just like Ford with their headquarters in Detroit Michagin.Does not sound very Australian, does it!.
Jason
For a car thats entirely designed in Aus with the Zeta architecture designed not just for VE but other cars built in the GM world, with the royalties going to Aust, makes the VE far more superior than any car produced in Aus today alone. not bad
Aus engineers. I think its about time people realise and drive a car thats the best car produced in the this country.
Geoff
Yeah what I have read the VE should be considered a world car. I have not driven one yet but hopefully this nomination might change people's perseption of Aussie built cars including the Camry Falcon and 380. Congratulations Holden on being in the final 28 cars globally
Nick
Hmmm, it met the criteria, therefore it probably is a "world car".
Whether it's good enough to win or do well is really the test.
I hope it does do well, mainly to shut up the critics of Australian cars.
I was glad to be driving my Australian car this morning as I watched 2 suits try and push their broken down new BMW up Williams Road this morning. Looked like hard work.
mark
it could be if they put a better auto in across the range and fixed up the quality issues. considering the money holden gets to spend compared wiyh over seas companies the commodore is a good car

The wrong car at the wrong time.
While the sheet metal is fresh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It will be interesting to see if the car still looks good in a few years time, since cars with real style keep their appeal for longer than normal a-z whitegoods on wheels.
And with petrol prices the way they are, a big car like this is really poorly timed. I appreciate the decision was taken some time ago.
Still, to be a world car, it must be better than similar cars
around the world. My question is, how can it be a world car, if its lineball with taxi pack Falcons in its home country?
Sorry, but it has a LONG way to go before rivalling Audi, BMW, or Mercedes Benz.
Stephen
Holden have done a monumental job in designing and building the VE Commodore. It deserves to win the award!
Peter Watts
No its not a world car for me. I reckon the Humber will knock it off.
I'm with John Howard and George Bush, bring on the gusslers.
The global warming myth is just left wing propaganda.
shaun
your joking right. maybe in 3rd world countries where holden export to
Patrick
For the VE Commodore to even be nominated for "World Car of the Year" is a huge achievement in itself. It says alot about how highly regarding the Commodore is on the world stage now and every Australian should be proud of this.
The fact we even have a local car industry left, we should all do our part to save it and buy Australian made cars or we will end up the dumping ground for cheap imports, AND beige Toyota's !
Garth
Hey Jimbo, I’d ask you to get a grip, but it looks like you already have. As for travelling the world and driving the 100’s of cars out there…er, that’s all we do. Keep it real, bro.

Jimbo
Clearly if you listen to Josh Dowling's raging propoganda, the only world car is anything with a Toyota badge.
VE Commodore represents tens of thousands of man hours of work over 6 years and all you blokes want to do is jump on every possible negative.
When was the last time you ran a front page story on another manufacturer's recall hey? Never!
You guy's form part of the reason why Aussie car's get their bad wrap.
Stop comparing a 35K car to hand made Euro' sof 10 times the price.
Try building a car in Australia with our wage levels and Unions and on costs and then being asked to compete with Asian manufacturers who pay in peanuts.
Clearly the people who actually judge these cars think it's worthy of the War Car Nomination.
How many in your office has travelled the world and driven the 100's of other models out there? I'm betting none.
Keep it real you blokes. Dont go the tall poppy angle like everyone else.

Yes I do believe it is worthy as it is popular in all markets its sold in. The car should not be judged on early production versions as all carmakers have minor issues to deal with. The car stills ticks all the boxes that most drivers need.
bob
Lots of car for the money but really it is a big muther - as a family /sporty sedan I thought my VR Commodore was about the right size. And that monster v8 NO WAY should ordinary punters be able to get their paws on one; they are weapons grade material
PK
Whether the VE is or isn't WCOTY doesn't really matter - the fact that it was nominated shows that it is up there with the best
Eddy
of course it is.
JOHNNY
STILL AT FIRST BASE IN BECOMING A WORLD CAR. IN NO WAY IS IT UP TO GERMAN ENGINEERING
rentakeyboard
With my Holden bias Id have to say of course it is. But as an Aussie i am proud of the fact that it is even part of this award. Whether it wins or not TOP JOB Holden
steve
no its a POS!
sam
this car is really nice can u place pimp my ride place
Sandeep Patel
Give the VE a chance to get out there first!! After 2 recalls I'd hate to think if any more are coming! VE hasnt been out that long and its getting praise. Give it 6months at least!
DAVID
World Car, Big Deal the 3 Series BMW won it last year and it is a shocker.
W. Challinor
The VE is so overrated, too many problems have arised since i'ts inception, Holden spent all that money on development but forgot about the most important part, quality and reassurance of a good product so VE dosen't deserve to be nominated, sorry.
Drew
well, i believe it is, it is a bit of an audi come bmw come a few other euro lines. It is well made, clever new design and i believe it can compete. Hell if hyundai and kia are world cars, then a coke can can be classed as a world car. Its a good car.
Geoff
No way. It's infinitely worse than most of the others on the list. It lacks style, is far too big and uneconomical, and has no innovative new features.
Other models on the list such as the Honda Civic boast groundbreaking new style as well as innovative interior packaging, and ergonomics.
Simply put the VE Commodore is not a world car, but it is still better than the Falcon.
