Michelle Ainsworth of the Herald Sun has reported jobs may be at risk as Holden looks to scale down Commodore production.

HUNDREDS of workers at Holden's Melbourne operations could be out of work ...

after the company told senior staff it would stop making the iconic Commodore.

Job losses could start early next year with up to 350 staff losing their jobs by mid-2013.

Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers chief Chris Walton said senior Holden staff were told the 2014 Commodore could be the last made in Australia.

Mr Walton said the union, which represents engineers who design the Commodore, was told of the possible changes while negotiating a new pay deal.

  • I find this news VERY annoying, first I wanted a VE Sv6 sport wagon with a manual box and stupidly Holden doesn't make one, so I had to make one using a sedan manual box. Now they don't want to make the whole car! how irritating is that! There are plenty of small cars with small engines with Holdens name on them out there! Why drop the car? I think Holden droped the ball realy! It's the perfect family car and I can tow the boat with it. seems ridiculous. Who cares what ford do why does every one need to worry about what every body else is doing? If this continues, we will all end up driving FWD boring cars. Long live the Commodore.

  • It's not true. 2014 the Commodore will be the last commodore made in Australia. Why?

  • Jimbo - there is most definitely a large stockpile of Falcons at Broadmedows. This was stated by Ford themselves in response to cutting back production line shifts and has been seen by anyone who ventures out there. The Falcon cannot live on into a new generation the FG Series will be the last real Falcon before it’s a Taurus based car and the Commodore will most likely follow to a global platform in 2018 ish.

  • David of Gold Coast I think you are suffering from sun stroke. Find me a stockpile of Falcons at Broadmeadows. Ford dropped the Falcon wagon in favour of the Territory and Mondeo wagon. Ford is actually making a PROFIT every time they sell a car. Who's throwing stones at glass windows now?

  • Really sad. Great cars. We need them to continue manufacturing in Aus. Keep the skills here.

  • @ Phil C of Newcastle. I'd hate to burst your bubble, but Ford Australia are in far greater trouble then Holden. The Ford Falcons are stockpiled in the Broadmeadows plant by the thousands. Ford no longer have a falcon wagon nor do they have a long wheelbase LTD or Fairlane. Ford Australia don't even have an XR8 in their fleet anymore, nor any V8 powered Falcon for that matter. If you want a ford V8 you have to buy an FPV. Falcon is getting replaced by the front wheel drive Taurus. GM Holden Australia is in far less trouble than Ford Australia. It's simply a name change on it's way because Commodore name is getting old. They went from Kingswood to Commodore, it's just a new name on it's way. Holden will continue to build large rear wheel drive cars in Australia. Don't throw stones at glass houses.

  • agree with Phil C.. Buy Fords. They are better cars and have more local input than the Commodore... even Toyota Camry has more local input than the Commodore....

  • Unfortunately you might not be able to buy a new Falcon soon as well Phil dude.

  • Better option would be to sack the so called senior staff if that's their call.

  • Nooooo! Very bad news

  • Buy a Falcon or Territory. The best Australian cars anyway. Ford making Aussie cars since 1925. Would be sad to see manufacturing in Australia continue to dry up. All we'll end up being is consumers, miners and farmers. We NEED manufacturing.
