The upcoming Falcon GT has been cleared for take-off after an 8215- kilometre clearance check by the top man at Ford Performance Vehicles.

Rod Barrett led the driving crew on a deep dip into the heart of Australia with a pair of FPV test cars fitted with the upcoming Coyote V8 engine.  He is not talking detail on the new GT, which comes to showrooms in the final quarter of this year, even though the test cars are obviously fitted with the four-pipe exhaust system coming on the updated and upgraded FPV flagship.

Barrett put 10 days of driving into two cars, taking a loop run up to Darwin and back from FPV headquarters in Melbourne before a final sign- off on the new car.  "One was a new GT mule and the other one was our, let's just call it our 'new V8'," Barrett laughs.

"The run was for mileage accumulation. We need to put at least 30,000 kilometres on one car and a significant amount more on the other car with the 'new V8'.  "I was going to Darwin anyway for the V8 Supercar round. So we mapped a course north. The engineers flew up and did some hot tests and then we came back through Mount Isa."

Barrett says the long drive was a major education on the engineering work that goes into a new FPV model. The only unplanned stoppage was to change a tyre.  "It's good for me. There is a five-page form for me to fill out every night," he says.

"I drive it not like an engineer, but like a punter. So it was good.  "It was like a working holiday. I had 10 days behind the wheel and up to 980 kilometres in a day."

Not surprisingly, Barrett describes the coming Coyote-powered FPV as ‘a phenomenal car’, without going into any details on performance or the vital emissions changes to meet legal changes in Australia.  He says the Coyote change is the biggest in at least seven years, since FPV first put its current 5.4-litre V8 into the Falcon.

"The whole car changes because of that powerplant. There are lots of new things, like the next exhaust," Barrett says.  "I'm now looking forward to the release. For all the cars with the 'new V8' we're aiming for the motor show in Sydney and Bathurst, that sort of timing."

  • New SV6 looks nice, but I sure tell ya that I'd be pretty upset if I'd forked out the money for an SS ... As far as I can tell, the only exterior difference are the badges and the 4 exhausts ... At least there's more model difference between an XR6 & 8 ... I personally think that an extra 15 thousand or so dollars should get you more than 2 stick on badges and some tin pipe.

  • Well said Brian DH... couldn't agree more...

  • With very much respect to 'Cupid Stunt' - re his comment, he knows not of what he speaks. Taxi owners flock to auctions of Falcons a few years old as they know they will get hundreds of thousands more k's from them with little issue. Don't shoot from the hip so blindly 'Cupid Stunt' - your ignorance on the subject kills your crediblity! By all objective metrics, Falcon has been the true survivor for 50 years because of its durability and value. It is in better shape now than many 50 year olds I know!! Cheers.

  • Ford only offer a "taxi" pack so they can boost their sales. No other manufacturer would trash their reputation by constantly exposing the buying public to run down vehicles that show how bad they really are as a long term ownership proposition.

Cupid Stunt Posted on 09 August 2010 1:50pm
  • So true Jason of Melb and Peter..........

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 06 August 2010 9:29pm
  • The Falcon is large robust and cheap and will do many many miles it is an ideal taxi in our country and it is a factory supported taxi pack it is the people that use them that ruin them and some driver and operators not the car.

jason of melb Posted on 05 August 2010 12:40pm
  • Cupid stunt......like i said your name says it all!!!!!!!!

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 05 August 2010 12:04pm
  • Hey Klaus - We aussies may stink because of the heat but you Germans can't fight wars

    Peter Posted on 05 August 2010 11:38am
  • Nein - def a Falcon taxi smells more then das German taxi. We dont have stink drivers in Deutschland. They are kuput same as Falcon taxi - KUPUT.

Klaus Klappa of Deutschland Posted on 04 August 2010 9:13pm
  • Wazza - my name is sarcastic unlike yourself which it is a description of!!!

Cupid Stunt of Melbourne Posted on 04 August 2010 9:09pm
  • Cupid, "you idiot".....has it ever occured to you its the driver of the taxi, not the car or is it you that stinks which more than likely it is "hahaha"......why do you think taxi companies use the Falcon, cause they are reliable and tough......your name says it all and you've got ya nose to close to ya bum!!!!!

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 04 August 2010 3:16pm
  • To Cupid Stunt - JUST TRY to say something remotely intelligent, but with the IQ of a mosquito it must be difficult for you

    Peter Posted on 04 August 2010 2:26pm
  • What aspects are of poor design? The engine was relatively basic and bulletproof. The auto is in the same boat. The irs diff is not a huge fan of a flogging but is a good unit. Interior and switch gear basic but reliable. ABS bosch unit so no problems there

jason of melb Posted on 04 August 2010 10:53am
  • Jason of Melb - Even with routine maintenance, the poor Holden design and build quality will always let you down.

Darryl Knighton of The Shire Posted on 04 August 2010 9:11am
  • Hey Peter, have you sat in a Falcon taxi recently, they stink!! I bet an Audi taxi doesn't stink!! How many Falcon taxis do you see with bits hanging off. Audi's seem to last forever.

Cupid Stunt of Melbourne Posted on 03 August 2010 10:18pm
  • cupid you must feel so much better having showen everyone how daft you are what a mindlessly stupid comment

jason of melb Posted on 03 August 2010 3:07pm
  • Kaygas, you and ya missus must be the lucky ones......Or is she texting you, to come and pick her up because her Commodore broke down again.......

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 03 August 2010 1:05pm
  • To Klaus of Germany - your Audi taxi would fall apart way before doing more than a million kilometres mate - which is what our Falcon taxis do during their lifecycle. On their original engine. On our crook roads. The family on my wife's side have insisted on Euro cars in days gone by, but after endless repairs, not to mention the cost of servicing, their opinion of them have changed. Most of them have Aussie cars now and haven't looked back at the Euro trash.

    Peter Posted on 03 August 2010 12:22pm
  • Luck has nothing to do with it its called routine maintenance. every car needs it. and it is very cheep on the commodore especially if you can do the labour your self. a maintained Commy is going to be a reliable and trusty old girl and it has been when i got my work car i passed it on and it is still going strong. so natrualy when it came time to buy a family car i went and drove the VE and from that ordered one and am loving it ever since. rupert you narrow minded halfwit GM own the Korean company and are now making global GM cars not the otherway round. the commodore will not become Korean it is the new platform and the only one of its type in GM. seriously stop before everyone see you clearly know nothing about what you are talking about and get back in your eurobox daze and if bogan is the only word you can come up with consult a dictionary

jason of melb Posted on 03 August 2010 9:58am
  • Audi taxis would not survive in Australia. No chance. Realize that Australia needs cars designed for Australia. The Australian taxi would be better than the Audi! Come and see if you don't believe, Klaus!

Tom Krutsky of Perth, Western Australia Posted on 03 August 2010 12:35am
  • Darryl, you are a fool to think that the Commodore is unreliable. My Vt commodore has 503,000kms with original engine and transmission and i drive it harder than anyone drives their car. I have been waiting for it to die so i can get a new commodore but but hey, the grim reaper must be a Commodore fan. My partner was a BMW owner, but she became sick and tired something always going wrong and way too expensive servicing, she became jealous of commodore reliability and she bought a commodore. There isnt a day where she doesnt tell me or text me just how awesome commodores are. I love other cars too, like the falcon, and others, it's just annoying that snobs underestimate how good Australia's own car is.

kaygas of melbourne Posted on 02 August 2010 7:40pm
  • Peter Posted on 30 July 2010 12:29pm Yes der Audi das ist taxi here but how can you compare an australien taxi against a german taxi?? The Audi is a zillion time better auto

Klaus Klappa of Deutschland Posted on 02 August 2010 5:25pm
  • Its only a matter of time before the Commodore is discontinued and replaced by a Korean offering. Holden has form on this, think Epica,Viva,Barina, etc. Then what will Bogans like Jason be driving.

Ruppert Theobald III of Silver Spoon Posted on 02 August 2010 3:58pm
  • Jason, I would be embarrassed to admit to owning two Commodores, especially with that mileage. Judging by how many broken down Commodores I pass on the roads and how many are getting about in poor condition, you must be the luckiest man alive!!!

Darryl Knighton of The Shire Posted on 02 August 2010 3:52pm
  • Sorry JC didn't read properly as quoted doh although i agree most American cars are garbage and if the falcon becomes a taurus based car that would be the end of it. the commodore will never become American as there is nothing to replace it with it may however be consigned to the history pages but not any time soon. Garryl i have autrocious spelling and grammar my spell check has a nightmare of a time in outlook and even that struggles to decipher my attempt at spelling. good thing I'm not an English teacher then huh! And i did mean to call you arrogant don't know if that was my mistype or in the editing room. i do however suspect you have not had the pleasure of piloting one of our modern Aussie offerings so on the issue I'm sure you are ignorant correct me if I'm wrong but dont try and spin bull in an attempt to make your stance carry some merit. value for money and the need for the space made me choose the SV6 and the cheap second car runabout VR i brought 10 years ago a further 330,000 k's with not more that a water pump failure really helped me go for a new Holden. Oh and my brother in law now drives me VR and he to will be buying a new Holden if the old girl ever does die.

jason of melb Posted on 02 August 2010 3:00pm
  • Jason, obviously spelling, grammar and punctuation are not your strong suite and you call me ignorant. Why else would you choose an SV6 over an Audi?

Darryl Knighton of The Shire Posted on 02 August 2010 2:31pm
  • Na Frank the mechanics in the drivers seat. perfectly clean and with a big smile on his face. yours has big smile on his face and a bulging wallet from all the cash you throw at him to keep the 10yo eurobox you bought for 25K on the road the 'O'ring i had to replace on mine fit in my pocket leaving the boot free for more important things i bought with all my spare cash

jason of melb Posted on 02 August 2010 2:29pm
  • You two can stay in you dream world and ill keep enjoying the money i have saved and all those nice twisty mountain roads 15min from home. 90000k's of pleasure and many more trouble free k's to come. i would loose more the the purchase price of the commy over three years with the Audi (yes its is a better car in some respects but I'm not complaining.) only those who have something to prove care so much about what others speed their money on and you two must have a huge chip on your shoulder when you watch the sales figures top selling car for how many years now? and i now know why. you are ignorant and display nothing but pure idiocy in your comments. you can buy you euro box's out of sheer ignorance and stupidity and blokes like myself and wazza can continue to have fools like you to laugh at.

jason of melb Posted on 02 August 2010 2:21pm
  • Am i making myself look like a fool or you are read what I wrote again my comment re Jeremy Clarkson was in reference to American cars doh

    Jeremy C Posted on 02 August 2010 1:59pm
  • Hey Jason, what do you carry in the nice big boot, spare parts and a mechanic?? I always thought that an SV6 was an Omega with a body kit, the spoiler and side skirts should be good in the bends. Try not to block the fast lane champ

Frank Cavens of Nappy Land Posted on 02 August 2010 11:42am
  • Jason, congratulations, you have shown the whole world that you have no class going from an Audi to an SV6??? Just keep telling yourself that you made the right choice as your dollars go sailing out the window along with your self respect. Maybe Holden will recall your car again to fix it!!! This should make you feel special

Ruppert Theobald III of Silver Spoon Posted on 02 August 2010 11:38am
  • oh Jeremy C... the real Jeremy C loves the aussie dinosaurs so think before you make your self look like a fool

jason of melb Posted on 31 July 2010 9:49am
  • Nice comment from the guy driving the rebadged Chinese Camry with to much HP. The sheer ignorance and pig headed stupidity of those who jump on here and bang their chest and grunt euro never fails to amuse me I think they are the ones compensating for a lack of appendage withe they need for euro status amongst the other euro snobs the rest just call you a tool as you go buy. and frank i get to drive my SV6 on the weekends and lets see thats dynamic comfortable and efficient and its massive to boot so i can fit what i need in it. and i am an Audi man but a commodore convert. some of us can recognise the value possessed in these vehicles and enjoy them for what they are narrow minded halfwits will call this boganisum and continue to drop large amounts of cash on their new euros for the symbol on the front. And they loose the greater actual cash value when it comes time to sell so.

jason of melb Posted on 31 July 2010 9:47am
  • I'll take a euro trash "hairdresser" car over any aussie dinosaur everytime. They'll be rebadged American rubbish in due course anyway .. and we all know how good American cars are just ask Jeremy Clarkson haha.

    Jeremy C Posted on 30 July 2010 2:04pm
  • To Ruppert Theobald III of Silver Spoon - You refer to our local cars as taxis - I guess your "European pedigree" cars aren't taxis in Europe? Get informed before you make a post you loser.

    Peter Posted on 30 July 2010 12:29pm
  • Yawn, you Ford and Holden boys have no idea what its like to drive a dynamic, comfortable and efficient vehicle. Its not all about straight line running and cubic inches. I guess you need to make up for the inches that you lack downstairs (if you know what I mean).

Frank Cavens of Nappy Land Posted on 30 July 2010 11:19am
  • You jokers wouldn't know a good car if it ran over you. Your V8 dinosaurs are over rated and irrelevant in this day and age. Not to mention that they are worthless as soon as you buy them and drive them off the lot.

Darryl Knighton of The Shire Posted on 30 July 2010 11:03am
  • Your V8 Taxis are no match for a well engineered European vehicle with pedigree. Dream on bogans.

Ruppert Theobald III of Silver Spoon Posted on 30 July 2010 10:13am
  • Nice way to make a aurion handel even worse 300Kw in a dead straight line maybe traction control pegging it back to about 150 useable kw when it tries to wheel spin = massive waist of money for some torque steer and lane hopping off the lights in the wet.

jason of melb Posted on 30 July 2010 10:10am
  • Sorry Jason tried to post the site but CG wont let me.........as well as that i wrote a massive spiel before that, then sure enough the internet dropped out again.......ARRRRRG.....not writting it again, so anyways you Alex, Dan of Tassie, Phil and the rest of you Holden boys, drive real MUSCLE......A FALCON!!!!!! That goes for you too Mr Aurion boy and hey "TDR man" where are they now.......hahaha.....

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 30 July 2010 12:59am
  • @ Darryl Knighton of The Shire Where did you get your Aurion chipped? That will make it smoke the bags nicely outside the bowling club

TRD man of Sydney Posted on 29 July 2010 5:47pm

bill of Vic Posted on 29 July 2010 5:33pm
  • Darryl good to see you drive a boring fridge on wheels that is an Aurion - aren't you embarrased..... 300 kw is where the GT starts you loser. Now go and put your cardigan back on.

    Peter Posted on 29 July 2010 5:33pm
  • Peter W has a simplistic mid - ford Australia do offer economical cars Peter, the focus & fiesta for starters.

    alex Posted on 29 July 2010 5:33pm

Nab of Tas Posted on 29 July 2010 5:29pm

Darryl Knighton of The Shire Posted on 29 July 2010 4:40pm
  • Ford Promised so much from there 5.4L v8 and what happend?it was crap. History will repeat itself Im sure! There promise lots but fail to deliver. Hsv will always have the upper hand with the bend 8's. Turbo 6 is and will always be Fords pick.

Dan of Tas Posted on 29 July 2010 2:05pm
  • um no gordo

jason of melb Posted on 29 July 2010 1:41pm
  • Peter W of Adelaide is you haven't noticed the Falcon is using less and less fuel with each update. It matches or is close to the Toyota Aurion with more torque and more room, and way in front of the Holden V6

Ford of Sydney Posted on 29 July 2010 1:13pm
  • Got any more details or a link Wazza i wanna ave a look

jason of melb Posted on 29 July 2010 12:18pm
  • Looks like a re-badged Ford Fusion from America with a v8 stuffed in it! Ford Australia should seriously look at the the American Ford Taurus with it's all paw twin turbo v6! Gordo, Arizona

Gordon Capewell of Arizona,America Posted on 29 July 2010 5:11am
  • Jason, i was talking about an American site that ran the 2011 Mustang and the new Camaro down an airstrip, and yes the Muzzy ate the Chev for brekkie........

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 28 July 2010 7:02pm
  • Wazza none of the Holdens have chev engines in them, they are all GM powertrain units. And will match the Coyote no dramas. Don't worry about that, the Clayton boys aren't even changing their outputs with E3.

jason of melb Posted on 28 July 2010 2:59pm
  • Phil, the "Taurus" in Aust, thats not gonna happen, you read to much crap!!!!! Cant wait for the Coyote, and yes its a Chevy 6ltr eater, seen the clips on other sites.......hahaha, and Peter i reckon ya right about them Holden girls, ooops, i meant boys????

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 28 July 2010 10:40am

Big Mat of Gisborne New Zealand Posted on 27 July 2010 5:42pm
  • Bring it on & lets show these Holden bogans!

Ford Lover Posted on 27 July 2010 5:08pm
  • Who cares, the days of the V8 are already numbered. So is the future of Ford Australia if they don't start making more economical cars to sell.

Peter W of Adelaide Posted on 27 July 2010 1:22pm
  • At least they go out with a bang before the Taurus (ooops) Falcon becomes front wheel drive. But before that Holden and HSV will have the Gen V DI and make the Coyote look a pup.

    Phil Posted on 27 July 2010 1:09pm
  • Sounds to me like the Holdung boys on this forum are getting nervous. The new GT will take its rightful place as the FPV king over the F6 turbo, as V8's should. And will dominate any of the offerings from HSV.

    Peter Posted on 27 July 2010 11:56am
  • Let's see now - isn't that just another tractor by Ford ?

phil of Perth Posted on 25 July 2010 7:13pm
  • We want to know so here is at least "some" info from Wikipedia 5.0 L Coyote The 5.0 L (4951 cc, 302 cid)[8] "Coyote" V8 is the latest evolution of the Modular engine.[9] It shares the 4.6 L's 100 mm (3.937 in) bore spacing and 227 mm (8.937 in) deck height,[10] while bore diameter and stroke have increased to 92.2mm (3.63 in) and 92.7mm (3.65 in), respectively. The engine also retains the 4.6 L's 150.7 mm (5.933 in) connecting rod length, which produces a 1.62:1 rod to stroke ratio.[11] The firing order has been changed from that shared by all previous Modular V8s (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8) to that of the Ford Flathead V8 (1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2).[11] Compression ratio is 11.0:1, despite having typical port fuel injection (as opposed to direct injection) the engine can still be run on 87 octane gasoline. The Coyote features a revised aluminum engine block with improved strength and crank-case ventilation, and all new 4V DOHC cylinder heads that have shifted the camshafts outboard, which allowed for a compact roller finger follower setup and improved intake port geometry. The result is an intake port that outflows the Ford GT intake port by 4 percent and the Yates D3 (NASCAR) intake port up to 0.472" (12 mm) lift, which is the maximum lift of the Coyote's intake cams.[11] The Coyote also features a forged crankshaft, forged powdered metal rods and hypereutectic pistons with oil jets to help piston cooling. Engine redline is 6800 rpm. The engine is Ford's first V8 application of cam torque actuated (CTA) Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT), which allows the power-train control module (PCM) to advance and retard intake and exhaust cam timing independently of each other, providing improved power, fuel economy and reduced emissions. The engine also receives a new composite intake manifold with a single blade 80 mm (3.1 in) throttle mounted low and center, necessitating a relocation of the alternator to the side of the engine. The engine is assembled in Ford's Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario, using existing Modular tooling.[12] Vehicles equipped with the 32-valve DOHC Ti-VCT 5.0 L include the following: 2011 Ford Mustang GT, 412 hp (307 kW) @ 6500 rpm, 390 lb?ft (529 N?m) @ 4250 rpm Vehicles anticipated to receive the engine include: 2011 Ford F150[13] 2010 Ford Falcon[14]

  • What should be mandatory on any thumping V8 is a decent throaty exhaust system, it's a must, why have the grunt if you can't have the roar to accommodate it .FPV 's GT with the so called "Coyote" motor will be something to look forward to, being a one-eyed Ford man of course .

Wazza of South Aust Posted on 24 July 2010 10:39am
  • Extremely similar styling with extremely similar performance with extreme mpg... I think I'II get a few more km's out of the 'ol EL yet. Costs me nothing to run, don't care if someone scratches it in the super market carpark, and still gets me from A to B in about the same time these high performance vehicles do. And a lot cheaper too !

Billy of Mrlb of MElb Posted on 24 July 2010 1:06am
  • Um Andrew, I think they were test the powertrain upgrade not the styling upgrade.

Frank Cavens of Kimberley Clark Posted on 23 July 2010 2:22pm

Chris of Morwell Posted on 23 July 2010 2:17pm
  • It looks the same as every other FPV, bland and boring. I'm sure it'll go like a rocket but I dont think that'll be enough to tell it apart from the rest of the FPV gang.

andrew of NSW Posted on 23 July 2010 12:38pm
