The Ford Ranger and the Mazda BT-50 are twins under the skins.

But which of those skins makes for the really beaut ute?

Both will initially be made in the same plant in Thailand but the Ranger will also soon be produced in Argentina and South Africa as another step in Ford’s ‘global platform’ policy.

  • I prefer Mazda than Ford We have just bought one in thailand Mazda bt50 Pro it calls over there we will pick up the car in june,can't wait, and I like the look of Mazda regardless.

  • What a disappointment, my local dealer has been searching to fill my order for a week, but couldn't close the deal. Finally ford has a product to sell but cannot supply, extremely disappointed. Thanks heaps though to Hillis Ford, more than satisfied with their service.

  • The Mazda with the factory bull bar looks great, the only gripe I have with the Mazda is the limited colours and availability,the many gripes with the ford is the styling and lack of goodies like diff lock as standard and 4 speaker stereo in the XL duel cab and most of all non availability, I actually mite have bought one if it was the same price as the Mazda which it wasnt (3k more) I mite have got one if it was available in a reasonable time, not months.

  • The BT50 front end grows on you. Add a TJM T13 bullbar and it looks totally awesome. Its the only winch compatible steel bar that does not require a bumper or grill cut and it totally changes the look of the front end. You can also keep the bumper and sell it to cover some of the bullbar instalation costs. Mazda should have spoken to TJM before coming up with thier own variant. Either way I like the Mazda better. Its about time a car manufacturer has the courage to design a commercial vehicle which doesn't look like every other box shaped heap on the market. Also, sales speak for themsef - Mazda is outselling the Ford. The tow bar on the Ranger also looks like a manure spreader and completely mucks up ground clearance. You can find plenty of them on ebay if your interested. The ground clearance on the Mazda tow bar is 40 mm higher than the Ford. One of many reasons why the Mazda is better.

  • whoes mocking who now. everyone has different tasts in styling. Price is a lot to most people, but the number of advantages the ford has over the mazda is worth more than the 3 k diff in price. The numbers sold will be the ultimate answer to which one the Aussies love the best. Best of luck to the winner.

  • I'm driving the BT50. Cheaper than the Ford and with bullbar, looks OK. Interior sold me; much better than the Ford.

  • I love that Mazda have done something different to what the other manufacturers are doing and a also love the way all the Ford lovers feel the need to completely mock the new look of the Mazda (Girls car etc.) I was taught that the only reason that people need to mock others is because they feel insecure and need to feel better about themselves by putting someone else down. Are all you Ford lovers feeling a little insecure?????

  • Well I've test driven both (auto's), and in reality, looks don't make it go any better. The dash layout on the Mazda is more user suited, I still can't understand why the Ranger has the hill descent & diff lock on the passengers side (dah). I'm getting the BT50, because it just makes sense.

  • Mazda have always made better quality vehicles than Ford and reliability seems higher too. The new BT-50 looks fresh and futuristc whereas the Ford looks dull and dated.

  • Most of you people on here have never owned a 4x4 and comment on how it looks. Think of the practicality of it when you add a bull bar winch and a lift kit. Most of the new trucks that come out today look tacky and unfinished. So to all you soccer mum and city driving folk, think before you buy a 4x4 and comment on how it looks.

  • Mazda looks rather good in that it's more sort of futuristic and modern for today and the Ford is tough and bald but not quite up to date. Waiting to buy either Ford or Mazda when it comes out and it's the price that will determine which vehicle.

  • The honeycomb rectangular end bits on the grille look cheap, one piece continuous honeycomb behind the three horizontal chrome bars from left headlight to right headlight would tidy things up. Otherwise it is quite aggressive.

  • I have been driving Mazda's for nearly 15 years now, love their style, performance, features, handling. But the BT50 is just plain disgusting - what was Mazda thinking?!?! So dissappointed with the outside - (the interior looks great). If Mazda does not fix the rear tail lights and do something about the grille when they launch, it will be a massive sales failure in Oz. The Ford looks so much better and it seems that 75% of the public feel the same according to the polls.

  • I think the Ford looks too American... The BT-50 is bold and fresh with the Mazda DNA... well done, the BT-50 looks great.
