Ford pushes FG against SUVs

Ford is banking on the new Falcon to lure families back from sport utility vehicles.

However, Ford hasn't made any promises that the FG model would continue to be built in Australia.

The unveiling of the FG in Melbourne came as doubts over the viability of local car-making reaches a crescendo, following the closure of Mitsubishi's Tonsley Park plant earlier this month.

Ford Australia president Bill Osborne was bullish about the car's prospects and said the FG Falcon would recapture market leadership from the Holden Commodore by reasserting its place in family life.

“Our intention is to grow sales and take our rightful place at the top of the segment,” Mr Osborne said at the launch.

“The primary thing driving our strategy is to target a broader range of customers, to move beyond the fleet buyer and performance buyer into more of a family-type customer. It's a stretching of the brand to appeal to more lifestyle.”

The biggest change to Ford's signature model in a decade focuses on improving safety, economy and comfort in a reorganised range but with many of the familiar model names — such as Fairmont — ditched.

They are replaced by a new G Series line-up, which targets the middle ground between fleet fodder at one end of the range and the V8 performance buyer at the other end.

All FG models are slightly bigger than before, with more powerful engines, new transmissions and a completely reworked cabin. In an unusual move, the ute and performance line-ups were revealed simultaneously with the mainstream sedans. The wagon continues in a revised version of its current shape.

Mr Osborne said that, as Ford reorganised globally to make better use of its engineering resources, it was an open question whether the Falcon would continue to be built here.

“No one in the industry is able to guarantee the future,” he said. “Right now, there is no plan for the foreseeable future for Falcon to go away.”

Regardless of whether the Falcon stayed, Ford was committed to Australian car-making. Last year, Ford announced its Broadmeadows factory would begin building the Focus small car from 2011.

“Whether or not this is the last Falcon is not really the appropriate question,” Mr Osborne said. “Our operations here are competitive and that's the benchmark for whether any manufacturing operation is viable.”

The FG is the result of two years' effort at Ford's Broadmeadows plant in Melbourne and unspecified millions of dollars, but it arrives as Australia's love affair with large four-doors has gone into deep freeze as buyers opt for SUVs or smaller cars.

Last year was the worst in the Falcon's 47-year history as sales plummeted 20 per cent with fewer than 34,000 buyers.

The FG looks certain to be the last large sedan engineered uniquely for Australia as Ford reorganises globally to make better use of its widespread resources. Mr Osborne said Australia was likely to have a say in the result “simply because our expertise is quite strong.”

The new Falcon goes on sale in April with prices to be announced nearer the date.

  • Chris, Ford haven't stopped making their Turbocharged straight six. For those that think the Falcons engines aren't modern. You need to read below because the only thing old is your perception of Falcon. Ford 4.0L I6T now kicks out a Holden thumping 270kW/533Nm and uses 11.7L/100km. Holden 6.0L V8 has 270kW/530Nm (less down low) and uses 14.4L/100km. Ford 5.4L V8 has 290kw/520Nm (less down low) and uses 14.0L/100km The standard FG I6 has 195kW/391Nm & uses 10.1L/100km. The 'warmest' V6 Holden, the SV6 has 195kW/340Nm & uses 11.3L/100km. On power, torque and efficiency the numbers are massively stacked in the Falcons favour. The Falcons are also lighter by about 10kg model for model. Impressive for a model that will be the first Aussie to get 5 Star NCAP rating. For the BG, Ford have also added a LAUNCH ASSIST to the standard traction control for the turbo models. Not only that there is also a 10% overboost function available. Similar to what Porsche does with their Turbo. As a comparision, the BMW I6TT 3.0L punches out 225kW/400Nm and uses 9.8L/100km. This engine won Wards International Engine of the Year 2007. So the Standard Falcon I6 has almost identical torque, but is down on power to the turbo'd BMW & the consumption is almost identical despite the Falcon being a size and a half larger than a 3 Series.

  • Does jimmy - WA know from personal experience? The new FG series is a liitle late having given GM a head start, however, it looks brillient. Does it come with a quad cam 5.4? Could someone tell me why Ford would stop making their best motor (Turbo 6) do they want GM to win with LS_ V8s as I doubt the V6 will be anywhere as good? Chris, Collarenebri.

  • Rick, I don't know that the Territory is a better drive than VE and I have driven both. But Wheels magazine did their active safety test 18mths ago and the Territory had better active safety / dynamics than VZ. But then again the Terri was the 5th best handling vehicle out of the Top 20 selling vehicles. The BF was rated 2nd best, equalling the BMW 3 series (used as the reference) and only bested by the Mazda 6. The BA-BF series handle excellently & had a terrific ride. The VY-VZ lagged well behind in chassis dynamics and refinement. Holden had to spend $1B to bring their old tech nail up to a level which only just edges out the BF2. The FG Falcon will be Fantastically Good. Bring it on.

  • vr ute, so you think Ford are always behind... Gee the rebadges Korean Daewoo's are so hi tech and leading edge. ROFL... Even your new Holden boss, the 2nd in 6mths came out two weeks ago and said those cars weren't as good as they should be, and in hindsight were a "mistake!" As for gas guzzling, Bob Lutz, head of engineering of GM. Lutz said that "global warming was a crock of *(&!" You might also want to note that the BF straight 6 Falcon out accelerates the SV6 by nearly 2 seconds from standstill to 100kmh. Also uses 15% less fuel... This new one will kick even further!

  • Well done a nice looking FORD... smile Glad there was 1 in the range was worried AU days were here again. Can not afford that Ford would dissappear. And that is not Healthy for the car market. But the rest of the line is awful.

  • They should have just bought a heap of Holden's and put a Ford badge on them. Poor form Ford!! Needed something special but it's just another Ford trying to be something it's not. Not a huge improvement over past model. Hopefully it's power makes up for it's looks. Two thumbs down!!!

  • I am holden man, I dont know if the FG (???) will win the same amount of awards as the VE did, but I hope the new Falcon does well. It is nice to see a car hit the market which is not another SUV or small hatch. Australia has already lost the Fairlane and LTD. lets hope Ford does well and we dont loose any further jobs in the industry. The FG, looks like another great Aussie car - 100% australian and great value.

  • I think the new Ford looks hot...and no doubt an awesome drive!

Trudy Buchanan of Adelaide Posted on 19 February 2008 11:23am
  • Well what can i say not bad but not great too, looks abit off but so do all the new models that come out I don't mind it but maybe that is why it looks so much like a Holden look at the door archers to the roof close. And look at the grill its mondeo crap.

  • Looks good at the front but last model was only just there when viewed from the rear.

    Steve Posted on 19 February 2008 1:08am
  • Personally I was quiet disappointed with the new FG Falcon, to me it looks like a combination of a the BF and the new Mondeo. Rick - Have you driven a VE and a Territory, the VE's are some of the best handling cars I have ever driven

Tim of Muswellbrook Posted on 18 February 2008 11:47pm
  • Norm, the new commodore looks like the old Astra. At least it's maintaining it's heritage. Do you think BMW got to where it is by building cars that wer completely different each time? No, they build them to an evolutionary theme - exactly the same deal here. That's how to build brand loyalty.

  • Here here Ford fans. I can't believe the Holden fans have the hide to call Ford copycats after releasing the VY/VZ (Toyota AU Magnadore) followed by the VE (obese BA). We have a Calais V which is essentially $54K rubbish, looks OK but the engine is loud and wheezy and the tranny is attrocious. Now for the same money we can get 270kw turbo with a slick 6-speed that looks so classy for the same dosh......Holden invest all their time in looks and give us the crappiest engineering around - they don't stand a chance. Can't wait to see a Lowndes/Whincup trifetor in this fantastic new machine!

  • Awesome. Ford continue to improve! Such beautiful cars to drive! Look forward to seeing one of these win at Bathurst.

your mate jimmy of WA Posted on 18 February 2008 7:01pm
  • Norm.............are you blind? Every panel is different. Of course it looks like a Falcon.............lets face it .....VE looks like a BA front end on a pair of oversized wheel arches !!!!!!! FG has a nice clean modern appearance and if you park a BA|BF beside it it will show you the cleaner sleeker lines of the FG. Looks better than the oversized VE anyway. BF dorve as well as the VE so the FG will kill VE in on road dynamics. Lets face it a Ford Territory is a better drive than a VE !!!!!!!!!!

  • "What’s new about it! Looks like the same old Falcon with a different front and rear end." Norm - Brisbane You just answered your own question. I think it looks good.

chris of sydney Posted on 18 February 2008 4:40pm
  • What's new about it! Looks like the same old Falcon with a different front and rear end. Pity Ford's on the slide or they may have able to create a really NEW Falcon to give us a world class alternative to the commodore.

Norm of Brisbane Posted on 18 February 2008 1:50pm
  • Looks too similar to what Holden produce - but then Ford are always lagging behind in any case. May get some sales but trend is nothing but down for Ford globally so why support a new generation of gas guzzlers that the world doesn't need.....now something green and EF may be interesting but dare say it'll be a copy of someone elses work !
