Falcon tops Commodore sales

    Ford Australia boss Marin Burela said the Falcon result — particularly the model mix and private share — was outstanding news for Ford in October.

Ford Australia would have been celebrating if the Blue Oval had only beaten Commodore sedan by just one Falcon sedan sale, but last month its was more like 30.

The Melbourne-based carmaker is looking at the light at the end of the tunnel with cautious confidence, brought about by solid forward orders of its high-end Falcon range and good signs for the facelifted Territory.  Ford Australia boss Marin Burela said Fiesta has grown its share but the Falcon result — particularly the model mix and private share — was outstanding news for Ford in October.

"Our desire was to do something special with Falcon sedan, dating back to 2006, we outsold Falcon sedan vs Commodore sedan.  "I can't tell you what great celebration and great delight there was in this — our share on Falcon sedan has grown over the last year from 25 to 35 per cent in sedan.   We're extremely excited by that, I can't tell you how delighted we were with that."

Burela is pleased with the Falcon sedan result but the good news is also coming from its imported line-up.  "The biggest challenge we had was maintaining our supply to dealers, we exceeded out targets on Focus, Falcon, Ute, Ranger, Transit, we had our best Ranger 4x4 private sales ever, the second best Ranger sales on record," he says.

Burela believes the company has lost Territory sales because the factory was failing to match demand for the facelifted SUV, something the company was rectifying.  "We're focussed to get the car from build to dealer in a streamlined process.  "I think we're losing sales because we don't have enough vehicles in the right locations to meet demand," he says.

The company will make a decision before the end of the first quarter of 2010 on the fate of the Falcon wagon based on market demand for long-serving wagon, which faces competition from within from the Mondeo wagon.  "Mondeo wagon has been pleasing, the wagon is now starting to attract some fleet interest, government, small business and the private buyer ... we're seeing a lot of activity on that,"  Burela says.

The Ford boss is looking to 2010 with cautious optimism and says the company has no non-production days planned for 2010.  "We believe the industry will kick up from the second quarter, we can re-balance quickly if we need to.

"The 2010 market, I'm a glass half full guy, my view is that the industry will be soft in the first quarter, but I think it will be 920-950,000, let's wait and see — we think 2009 will finish 915,000-920,000.  "We have to be cautious with the optimism, there's a lot more work to be done to get the industry back to where it needs to be," he says.

  • I've had 3 Falcon Wagons purely for their load carrying capabilities. (EL, AUII, BFII) When I bought the current one, I looked at the Territory but it's too expensive to run, and I like the load depth rather than the height. The BFII Wagon averages around 11L/100km around town and averages 8.5L/100km on a trip from Bris to Melb. Its fine and well to say the SUV is the new wagon, but I'm yet to find one that'll carry as much stuff as a Falcon and still return those consumption figures. I hope Ford update the rear suspension, give it the FG facelift and dont downsize it to a Mondeo. Surely it cant cost that much to facelift it into a modern vehicle. Having said all that, with the reliability issues they've all had and still have, the next car wont be a Ford, it'll be a Kluger or perhaps a Volvo.

  • I hope Ford finally come through with a Falcon wagon again, FG is a great car. Territory, while also a great vehicle it is, too big, thirsty and now dated. Commodore, what can I say, my knuckles don't drag on the ground, so that's out. Hello Subaru I suppose.

  • corey you are incorect in you statment that the fg platform is newer that the ve the fg sits on the same platfor as the au albeit a improved version. and the vf commie will still be on the ve platform just improved

  • About time,the FG is A brilliant car,it should of pulled the commie off #1 when it first came on the market. As far as the wagon go's, it should look like an FG and keep it big and not go a commodore type wagon. OH and keep the leaf spring rear end. Better to tow a car trailer with. JUST A THOUGHT.

  • Steven, your comment was both inflamatory and mis-informed. The current FG platform is one of the newest in the Australian car market. It has only just celebrated it's first birthday! The VE for example is still harking back to its origins of 2006! Nearly 4 years old! On top of that, Ford spent several millions of dollars on R & D before launching the new FG. It is unfair to say that no money was invested in this model. No doubt that the new VF due out next year will give it a run for it's money, but for now, they deserve some credit where credit is due. I agree that in the past, there have been some duds (AU comes to mind...), but this time, they have produced an excellent motor car. It's a shame it's taken so long for the Australian public to realise this.

  • Steven - Falcon Wagon = Territory. Wagons are out mid size SUV's are the new wagons.

  • I cant believe that Ford hasnt updated the Falcon wagon, cars are becoming more lifestyle orientated and sedans are so 90s. Oh well, typical Ford attitude - dont put any money into developing a product, whinge that it dosnt sell enough, then cancel it. How about they actually invest in a product then see the results?
