Falcon to fly on Mustang platform

    The 2011 Ford Mustang. Ford Australia's Marin Burela stressed that planning for the next new Falcon is barely into the research stage, hinting that it would be possible for the car to share much of its basic mechanical package with the next all-new Mustang.

The legendary Ford Mustang will be twinned with Australia's own Ford Falcon in a plan to drive the local brand forward beyond 2015.

The current FG Falcon is safe for at least another four years as Ford's local spearhead and plans are beginning to integrate its replacement into a new-look, globally-focussed One Ford organisation.

The move is unlikely to affect Ford Australia's local manufacturing operation, with the Falcon-based Territory SUV also set for an even longer run through to 2016, but will lead to greater efficiencies and a leaner, greener local family car.  The broad sweep of the Falcon plan was outlined exclusively to the Herald Sun yesterday at the Detroit Motor Show by Ford's worldwide president, Alan Mulally. He pointed to a continued role for the Falcon in Australia within an integrated global product plan.

"We'll be in the Falcon market, yes. But as we go forward we'll continue to use all our assets around the world," Mulally said.  "We have learned so much from the Falcon, because it's a dynamite car. Whatever that Falcon morphs to, for the next one, it will be available for everyone around the world.

He also effectively dismissed suggestions that the Falcon, a traditional rear-wheel drive design, would be replaced by the front-drive Taurus built for the USA. The Taurus has already failed once in Australia, in the 1990s.  "We're going to have a large sedan. The whole thing about rear-wheel drive? We're going to have a rear-wheel drive car," Mulally said.

"And we've got the Mustang. So you can imagine, going forward, that there will be a next version of the Falcon that will be even better. In capital letters."  Rumours of a end to the Falcon's run in Australia, and perhaps even an end to local production by Ford, were categorically denied yesterday in Detroit by the president of Ford Australia, Marin Burela.

"No company that was going to pull out of Australia would be spending $230 million on bringing the world's best powertrain technology to Australia for the Falcon," Burela told the Herald Sun.

He said the coming introduction of a four-cylinder engine in the Falcon would allow Ford to compete against new rivals, including the Toyota Camry, as well as setting a new class benchmark for engine efficiency.

"Our strategy is very clear. We took a very bold step forward when we announced a significant investment in Falcon only a few months ago. No other local manufacturer has committed that sort of investment in recent times," Burela said.

"Why did we do that? We did that to give Falcon an incremental level of growth opportunity over time."If you look at the things we have done on Falcon, and we are planning for Falcon, there is absolutely no reason for us to deviate because the plan is working."

Burela highlighted an improvement in Falcon's share of family-car sales in Australia in 2009 at the expense of the Holden Commodore, and even the need to work some weekend shifts at its factory in Broadmeadows to satisfy demand.  "It's actually delivering a very, very very exciting return," he said.

Burela stressed that planning for the next new Falcon is barely into the research stage, with no urgency on any sort of commitment. He also hinted that it would be possible for the car to share much of its basic mechanical package with the next all-new Mustang, but with a local body above the mechanical package.

"The Falcon's changeover is due to take place at the end of 2014, or early in 2015. Our decisions . . . for Falcon don't have to be made until we get through to the middle of 2011. So we have time on our hands.  "At the moment, all is well on the Falcon side of things. All is very well."

  • For Australian roads Mustang will need better suspension and brake which is available in our Ford Falcon models. Call the Mustang as Brumby or something locally. Mustang for left side steering and Brumby for Right side Steering with our better Ford Australia's E8 platform. suspension and brakes. When HSV is sold as Pontiac G8 in USA and Holden VF will be sold as Chevy SS in USA, when Chevy Cruze and Chevy Volt is sold as Holden Cruze and Holden Volt in Australia and why don't we Ford step it up and make Mustang as Brumby. When Ford Australia is planing on manufacturing Focus locally, why not plan making Mustang in Australia for Australians and export to other right-side steering countries like Britain Even if you price it from AUD$38,000 just as Falcon versions or from AUD$65,000 just as in FPV versions, I believe it will be a Big hit in Australia. It will not compete with Falcon as Falcon is 4 door sedan more suited for family.   • Why don't you introduce Mustang with the E8 platform and Falcon engines just as in Ford FPV in Australia. Ford Mustang in USA starts from USD$22,000 Drive Away and here in Australia, a similar car costs AUD$120,000 that's like 5 times expensive. Why can't Ford Assemble Mustang in their Melbourne factory. Mustang's dimensions of body width 1877 mm and body Length 4778 mm is very similar to that of our Falcon's dimensions of body width 1868 mm and body length 4956mm with only the extra boot space taking 180mm, which I am sure can be trimmed in design. Mustang is about the same dimension as Falcon and its FPV version. Truly this looks like a very much workable design.   • I have an FG XR6 turbo with a bit of work done to the engine. I love the car. Good economy if driven sensibly and has the power to put a smile on your face as well. It can tow as well as carry five people in comfort. A good car. My wife has an XR6 turbo 50th anniversary, it's an even better car. I hope the next Falcon is as good if not better, I'll buy it for sure.

  • I recently read an article on the Australian Falcon in a US based auto magazine. The one tested had a macho V8, and was stated as a very nice, fast, and great handling sport sedan. Let?s hope that Ford will offer more than the discussed 4 cylinder engine. Hopefuly the Ecoboost V6 plus the Mustang 5 litre V8.

  • I have always been a fan of the ford mustang and the new model design seems quite different to the original mustang.I would name the new model "Rocket Ft"., and would be proud to own one if the price isn't too high to purchase,but not on loan or rent.

  • Ford should build the Mustang on the Falcon platform rather than the other way around. The Falcon is technically a far superior car to start with. Just like the Falcon was the platform for the Mustang in the sixties I suppose. The Mustang is a really pretty car, but it needs the Falcon platform and build quality to make it a quality proposition.

  • It sounds to me like they definitely see the Australian Falcon platform as being superior to the Mustang and intend on using it in the US. If you read the article properly they have said they wish to make whatever the next Falcon warps into available around the world. This would be fantastic and Australia can be very proud of producing such a top quality vehicle. The engineering on the latest falcons is just superb and the reviews and sales back this up. Also they say they are definitely sticking with RWD, so again nothing to panic about. The Turbo 4cyl sounds like a very smart idea for people who just want to punt around like a 6cyl model, but with all the same dynamics and quality of the current falcon design. I think with a decent turbo it will work perfectly fine and in 10 years time you never know, you may only see a turbo 4 and a turbo 6 and the 8s phased out completely.

  • Please Ford, bring the Falcon ute to America! I don't even care where you build it, I just want one. I fell in love with utes when I visited Australia four years ago. I was raised in GM family, but now that they've gone socialist, I'm probably going to trade in my Grand Prix 6 on a Ford when it wears out. I'd like that Ford to be a Falcon ute.

  • FORD. Keep the Falcon rear drive, make a left hand drive version as a new 2012-2013 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis/Town Car in North America, possible Scorpio in Europe. For 2014, either update those cars and the Mustang or do the Focus RS8 method-make the rear drive cars off the front drive platforms. 1.Mustang/Cougar on a stretched rear drive Focus platform. 2.Thunderbird/Continental, Falcon coupe, unibody version of the Ranger pickup truck on a rear drive Fusion platform. 3. Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis/Town Car, Falcon sedan, possible Scorpio on a rear drive Taurus platform.

  • If Ford refuses to build a rear wheel drive Falcon in Australia,then the Aussies should boycott ford altogether.Lets face it,you can't have a front wheel drive ute.Ford Australia should invest in a V8 diesel for the Falcon to pick up sales.

  • The way I read it, the Mustang will get the FG Falcon body or floorpan , not the other way around. The Mustang has not been developed much if it still has cartsprings under the rear, therefore Ford has recognised the Falcon is a better RWD design to be standardised globally for the 'Stang.

  • Surely this is great news for Falcon, as it wasn't that long ago there was talk of canning it altogether. Just maybe the Falcon might end up giving more to a new Mustang than the other way around and Ford will end up with two great cars. Just remember, the Americans are too arrogant to ever admit it.

  • I am relieved to hear the Falcon will continue in Australia.. And as a RWD! Although I hope that when Ford does adopt a `Global RWD Platform' it opts for the Australian desiged FG and not the older Mustang. That said, if the Mustang gets up, perhaps Ford Australia will offer us a 2 door Falcon to sweeten the deal. And please keep the straight six!

Yes, way back in the 1960's when Ford Australia adopted the Falcon/Mustang platform and then improved & strengthened it to meet local requirements (i.e. crappy roads). It has since diverged from the Mustang platform over the years and evolved towards what it is today. The 94-04 Mustang sat on the Fox4 platform while the current generation (05-present) is using the D2C (for D-class 2 door coupe) platform, set up for a live rear axle. This is NOT the platform the FG Falcon (an IRS-equipped car lauded for it's chassis dynamics) is built on. While very popular, factory Mustangs of the last 20-odd years have never set the world on fire in the handling department. Get hold of a US Ford magazine like 'Muscle Mustangs' or '5.0L Mustang' and have a look at how many aftermarket companies are offering up chassis kits for these cars. Their stiffness/torsional rigidity (and therefore handling) from the factory is less than brilliant and anyone who wants one to go around corners properly will find themselves installing one of these kits. Ignorantly yours.....

  • Maybe the mock up 4 door Mustang that was presented on paper (by TopSpeed Car Reviews) recently in the USA was a sign of the new Falcon. But I doubt it will have the great 4.6L V8 engine. It should have been done years ago. (google 4 door Mustang) It is supposed to be out in 2011 as a 4 door Mustang. Great looking Falcon !!!

  • I address this to all the panic merchants out there. Just chill out & let Ford do what they have proven to be very good at in the last decade - build great Falcons. All the Falcons from BA to FG are absolutely fantastic cars. No one really knows what engineering challenges are required to blend a Mustang into a Falcon, but I'm sure they will do an excellent job. I look forward to seeing a great new Falcon around about 2016. Go Ford!

  • A lot of pessimists who obviously haven't read the article properly. It won't be an imported car, it won't be front-wheel-drive and it won't use the Mustang platform. Just because they want the Mustang drivetrain doesn't take away the Aussie built Falcon as a base to work from. The Aussie Falcon is revered by the US.

  • @Garfield Forbes of Sydney, you cannot compete with McDonalds by selling lettuce so why should ford sell only RWD SUV when there's no RWD euro SUVs anywhere in sight. I think they should sell both at least. Ford is doing itself a good favour by using a mustang platform. They will sell more falcons with mustang platform than they will sell mustangs with falcon platform, who would buy it anyway.

  • Three months ago I bought my first genuine Oz manufactured car an FG XR6 (na) with the fab ZF auto. I still cannot believe how good it is. It has euro inspired precision and incredible economy if driven intelligently and particularly since I have had it converted to liquid gas injection which produces MORE power. I would say this vehicle is the first example of an U.S.(German inspired) product that has out of sight quality eg forged alloy front suspension. The only thing I would like is a better tuned exhaust to bring out a more refined sound. We should be proud of this car.

  • People read the article properly!! The car will be RWD and not an American import. It will be built on a common platform eg Ford Focus and Mazda 3 are built on the same platform but are a different car and the Commodore was built on an Opel platform from VB trough to VZ but not and import!

  • No one seemed to bother when the commodore was built on a FWD Opel platform. Look at the sales they had. The Falcon being build on a mustang platform can be good if the Ford Australia designers had a fair amount of input into it. And the media bashing about the future of the Falcon in the last week trying to kill of the Ford Australia production is undeserved. mmmmm nothing about the future of the Commodore though I have heard by 2 GM employees that nothing is planed beyond 2013 and in the past 12 months parts have been cut that were on the original VE eg pair of rear suspension arms to cut cost because GM is cut costing

  • It's ironic that the original Mustang was based on the Falcon platform, & now it's coming full circle. But I agree that the current Falcon platform is much better than the current Mustang, & Ford would do better to reverse the plan. Let's hope they can overcome their US egocentric bias, & make the decision on mechanical superiority alone (I'm not holding my breath tho)

  • The four banger Diesel turbo Falcon will tackle all the Euro and Japaneese competition head on. But it has to remain RWD to have the edge on them. Falcon should never go to FWD otherwise it will compromise it's reputation. The modern day diesels are great on power and torque although still have a truck like sound - but consumers are less concerned about engine noise these days. For the traditionalists the straight six has always been the biggest seller in the Falcon range and there's no reason to change that marque concept. Have look at other common brands that have retained high po straight sixes and still performed extremely well on the world stage i.e. Porsche and BMW. Ford - do not use a V6 for the Falcon as it will again compromise the tradition and reputation. There's a lot of work required to sell a cross bred Falcon/Mustang to the world but the American Muscle and Aussie Know-How can make a good marketing song together across the globe I feel. As for the V8's I read that FPV will be the only provider of a Falcon with a bent 8 in the Future. They should diversify the brand into different market segments globally like Toyota/Lexus or BMW/M or Subaru/STI.

  • While I'm happy the Falcon will continue in rwd format I am concerned that it will use the Mustang's platform. In true US fashion these cars go well, but don't corner or brake. Ford would do itself a bigger favour by using the Falcon platform for the Mustang....

  • Peter Johns.... the Falcon has never had a V6 engine - always a straight 6. The "Aussie yob mentality" has dictated that V8s are popular (even if they actually buy a 6), but V6 vs straight 6 has never been an issue for Ford owners - just a point of difference to the V6 Commodores.

  • Re the comments by "ford failz of QLD" - what a twit... obviously didn't even bother to read the article properly - especially the bit saying "We're going to have a rear-wheel drive car". Holden fans must be cringing at the thought of you representing them! Others have commented on the 4cyl engine and compared it to the old 4cyl Commodore - an obvious comparison, but not quite the same.... Ford claims "the new turbocharged 2.0-litre direct-injection four-cylinder petrol engine will deliver six-cylinder performance with the fuel consumption and emissions of a small car". It claims "the four-cylinder will use 15 to 20 per cent less fuel than V6 alternatives." As for concerns about Mustang being on a shorter platform than Falcon... I think it's much too early to draw any real conclusions as to how that's going to work out - maybe an extended variation of the platform can be developed - who knows? The interesting part of the article in this respect is the comment "Whatever that Falcon morphs to, for the next one, it will be available for everyone around the world."... the possible numbers there would make small variations more viable.

How the original 'Falcon dead' journalists got it so wrong is amazing. The FG Falcon factory is already running at full capacity. Ford Australia is also profitable too.

  • Hope they get smart and take a ford/PSA Diesel for it , either the 125Kw 370NM 2.2 bi turbo like i have in my citroen G5 STI which is a real stump puller. The other PSA engine that ford use internationally in this sise car is the V6 15KW 400NM Such as you find in Land rover and Jaguar. Just lets hope ford get some smarts and give us a great car rather then just a good one.

  • The Mustang looks great but don't forget to fit Australian brakes and suspension, also replace the more powerful straight six with the V6 in standard units, despite being a better engine our Aussie yob mentality dictates that engines must have a V in them to be popular.

  • Keeping the Falcon as a large RWD car is great news but a 4 cylinder falcon??? This was tried by Holden in the VB commodore and it was a failure. What we need is a mid sized 4 cylinder RWD car. They sold bucket loads of 4 & 6 cylinder Australian built cortinas and toranas in the 70's. They stopped making RWD versions is the only reason people went for mid sized FWD cars. It was not the consumers choice.

  • For the Falcon and Mustang platforms to merge, there will have to be considerable compromise as the Mustang is a significantly smaller vehicle than the Falcon. It's unfortunate that this article doesn't address the differences in the current vehicles. Given that FoMoCo will be making the decisions, it seems unlikely that the Mustang will be losing its proportions to save a low volume car in Australia. I find it difficult to take Burela and Mullally at face value. After all, they're hardly going to admit that the Falcon's future is doubtful. Anybody remember MMA's 'Project Phoenix'?

  • No thanks to the Australian designed body with American underpinnings. That's the wrong way around. We're great at the mechanicals but the exterior design has always let the Falcon down. Whereas the Yanks get the outside right and still chose to use horse and carriage technology underneath. Let them design the outside, and use our internals. That would be a sweet car.

  • I read current Falcon doing well. I can't Judge anything on the Mustang & Falcon merge. I do remember the Ford Taurus in Australia & it failed alright. I seen the new Taurus I was thinking it should replace the Fairlane/LTD in Australia to compete with Stateman & 300C but I know it might not happen. I seen a few of the current Mustang in the streets.

  • Ford AU sent a few FGs to the US 2 years ago now so Ford US could evauluate them...they know what we can do with 300/400Kw our cars stop and handle very very well hey we have the great Jag rear suspention thats over looked now when BA was first bourne 8-9 years ago all i can say is Ford Australia will do us proud cant see any other reason that the Mustang will not have the Falcon underpinnings. Go Ford

  • A merging of the Falcon and Mustang platforms would be really positive if Ford Australia designs take the lead, but a backward step if Ford US has it. I have owned many Falcons and also currently a Turbo Territory and two late model Mustang Cobras. Whilst the Mustangs have awesome performance, their suspension, brakes and dynamics are primitive. The US after market offers a watts link as an upgrade for the Mustang live rear axle, a good design which saw duty from XE to EL Falcons. All done by 1997. If we got a Falcon based on the current Mustang platform, we will be back to the 90's. The SN95 Mustang which finished in 2004 dated back to the cheap 1979 US Falcon. The new crop of US models has improved, but Dearborn is the backwater of Ford excellence.

  • It would be good if the Falcon and the Mustang could be built on the same platform as each other in the "One Ford Organisation". As well they could build both cars in North America and Australia giving the Americans an actual family sedan (Falcon) and Australia and Asia-Pacific a sports coupe made in the region (Mustang) and is right hand drive.

  • i own a 1967 mustang coupe original colour sauterne gold,i have had this car almost 3 years & i am 1st owner in australia,i am proud to have my car & to think a falcon mustang coming out would be a boost in dollars for my car, plus the fact would be great for all of us to by a falcon mustang already here

  • thanks... Ford for putting it out in the media about falcons future... The lack of comments in the media is interpreted by media as "ford will end the falcon nameplate in australia."

  • A 4 cylinder Falcon you have got to be kidding. Yes the Camry does have a 4 cylinder engine but it is also 300kg lighter than the Falcon. Ford you can keep your 4 cylinder falcon i will be buying a Commodore diesel when it comes out because the Commodore will tow a caravan but a four cylinder Falcon won't and the diesel will also use less fuel.

  • SO much for the scare mongering headlines by most media sources just days ago, claiming that it looks like the end of the road for the Falcon and for Ford Australia. Total manipulation of any future-falcon information offered by Ford Global to make it seem as if there is no future for the Aussie icon. Just goes to show how strong the Australian Media's LOVE for the Commodore really is. They didn't dare suggest such a bleak future for Holden when GM was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy.
