Falcon flies in safety ranks

  • By Paul Gover
image Ford is likely to make a considerable fuss over the five-star success, as the rival VE Commodore only has a four-star ranking. The locally-made Toyota Camry and Aurion also rate four stars, the same as the now-dead Mitsubishi 380.

The new Ford Falcon has just earned the world's highest safety ranking.

The FG Falcon scored a five-star result in the latest round of tests for the Australian New-Car Assessment Program, matching the benchmark set by luxury cars such as the Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3-Series and Renault Laguna.

It is the first Australia-made car to achieve a five-star ranking.

Results of the testing will not be announced until Wednesday, following a recent series of crash tests and safety assessments of Ford's new local flagship.

Apart from the traditional frontal-impact test, any five-star contender must also pass a side-impact test. And it must have seat-belt warnings for every passenger space.

From the start of this year, any car awarded the top ranking by ANCAP must have ESP stability control fitted.

Ford is likely to make a considerable fuss over the five-star success, as the rival VE Commodore only has a four-star ranking. The locally-made Toyota Camry and Aurion also rate four stars, the same as the now-dead Mitsubishi 380.

Full results of the ANCAP testing should also include the Falcon's rating for both child occupant and pedestrian safety, which are now taking a higher priority in safety scoring across the globe.

A five-star result will allow Ford to promote the car in showrooms with a special ANCAP sticker, which has been offered to any carmaker with a safety standout but so far only taken up in Australia by Subaru.

  • Ford seems to have done a fantastic job with the FG Falcon range, shame it's not selling and may well be the last in a long line of great cars.

  • First up, it is a good thing that falcon has achieved the safety rating, all manufacturers should be aiming for this target. But dan of melbourne "where will it leave GMH" the "show pony hairdressers" vehicle has already got esp, and has done so from release. will all those people buying the falcon ute until the end of the year be able to go and get esp fitted at no extra cost when it does come out? or is that something they will just have to go without? too bad if it rains between now and then hey? And last time i checked they dont make a wagon at all anymore. they only have the territory which wants to be an suv when it grows up.

  • Alex your comments are very topical, Subaru has had ANCAP five star vehicles for years, and in 2008 all of their models, including the base Impeza are five star. ANCAP is the Australiasian test, unlike many European vehicles sold in Australia claiming 5 Star, the ANCAP test is for Australian spec vehicles with RHD controls, not LHD spec european models not sold in Australia. It's interesting that Ford have created a point of difference with safety being their main weapon against Holden. Companies like Subaru, Mercedes, Volvo have always focused on safety as a critical selling feature, I'm glad the Australian companies have woken up to this critical factor.

  • Jason HUDE, you make some interesting points, however, I'm not too convinced they are valid. Firstly, if we look at the bas models, why would anyone want to buy an omega? Is slow, thirsty and has a lousy safety rating relative to the aurion and falcon. Then we have the commodore ute (show pony hair dressers vehicle), thats not a ute, you cant even put a brick in the back without overloading the IRS and chewing the rear tyres. Wake up and smell the coffee, Ford don't make show pony utes and "sports wagons", they make their utes and wagon vehicles for real labourers. Oh and give it before the end of the year and the new ute will have ESP. Where will that leave GMH? Finally a 10year platform which is years ahead of the VE.

  • Jason DUDE you sound like you got some kind of Rain man thing happening there. Your own rantings boost Fords reputation for building better cars. You said it yourself, the new FG essentially is based on the EA169 platform or as its more commonly known (AU platform) and it still manages a better safety rating for the BASE model (what ANCAP always test) than its local competition. In fact, if you check ANCAP.com.au, you'll see that the BA falcon (which as you said, is based on a 10 year old design) rated score of 27.27 out of a possible 35 for an off set frontal crash test. The new VE commodore only managed 27.45 under the same test conditions and criteria. You cant argue with the facts mate, no matter how hard you try. So your comment about the Falcon catching up to the commodore, according to the facts, you got it back to front...

  • It's like the Heart Foundation , pay a price and we will endorse it . The car tested probably had air bags as an option , a bit like IRS was in 1999.

  • Congrats Ford well done, now lets hope the US heirachy will let them EXPORT or are they waiting for the first turbo diesel Falcon like me

Terry Corby of Wodonga Posted on 05 August 2008 9:16pm
  • So, 5 stars, obviously an egas falcon - the repmobile special issued to almost all workers and FLEET drivers - THAT DOES NOT HAVE ESP has also been awarded these ratings? Come on what about the falcon wagon? WHICH PARTICULAR MODEL WAS AWARDED THE RANKING - The G6E ( Fairmaont GHIA) ? which model? The ute doesnt even have ESP for the time being as reported in WHEELS / MOTOR! Something had to be awarded to Ford for the Falcon - they only designed 1 (one) car, a sedan, a rebody and rejig of a 10 year old design AU - 1,2 and 3, BF- 1,2 and now FG! Oh they only had to cut one design in half to come up with the ute! Where is the NEW wagon, Where is FAIRLANE / LTD, LEFT HAND DRIVE / EXPORT VERSION -SORRY ONLY HAD TO DESIGN ONE SEDAN - and only caught up with all new COMMODORE! Mr FORD stop taking the mickey out of the Australian buying public, stop taking them for granted!!!!

  • Subarus have had 5 star crash rating for as long as they have had AWD, contratulations to the best Aussie made car for getting the best crash rating.

Alex Symonds Posted on 05 August 2008 7:42pm
  • This demonstrates the difference between a car built properly and a car that sells based on misinformation. Holden fans can whine all they like but you can't hide from facts.

    D Aldridge Posted on 05 August 2008 6:43pm
  • Not often you hear so many great things about a new car model. Ford needs to start using these positive reviews and awards to promote their latest and greatest. It's unfortunate that people in aus are so brand loyal and refuse to choose something on what it can currently achieve, (people STILL mention the AU Falcon). Anyone who reads the reviews done by professionals can't deny how well made the FG is. Frustratingly, Ford still won't export to the US where this car would most certainly be a refreshing change for the yanks

  • A pity about the appalling resale value.

    Howard Posted on 05 August 2008 5:00pm
  • Good on Ford. I have always been slanted towards Holden, that is until these latest models. After looking at the 3 big aussie 6s the answer is now crystal clear. Falcon, then Aurion then and distant Commodore. The Commodore is nothing more than a built for america piece of junk

    steve of mt.eliza Posted on 05 August 2008 4:24pm
  • A rating to gladden the hearts of cops and cab drivers because, let's face it lads, no-one's gonna drop their own dough on a car made for the Australia of 10 years ago.

Paolo of Sydneyville Posted on 05 August 2008 2:59pm
  • I don't think the market appreciates just how good this car is. It rides and handles serenely, has effortless performance and refinement, can tow a boat or caravan with ease and accomodate a whole family. Its ability to avoid an accident - due its world class handling and stability control aids, makes this a much safer vehicle than any of the SUVs out there. People who also say it is too big and mid size cars will be cheaper don't realise that the fuel economy is only 5-10% worse than Accord/Camry etc. And if you're a rev head the XR6T is a dream performance sedan. Well done Ford - the other manufacturers will have to work hard to catch up to the benchmark.

  • I think its great that an Australian produced car gets a 5 star safety award

RON CAMPBELL of wendouree Posted on 05 August 2008 10:45am
  • I think this is a great step forward. Congratulations to Ford But for those who think that Australia is far behind, don't be too critical - the recently superseded Honda Accord (&Euro;) and Civic had a 4* rating, along with a number of other Japanese cars most people think are very safe [Mazda's, Subaru's ... ]. The Renault Laguna was the first to score 5 stars, and it was quite a while before BMW, Mercedes, and Volvo caught up.

    chuckovski Posted on 04 August 2008 11:01pm
  • Even though I'm a Holden fan, I have to congratulate Ford. I still remain sceptical of how the ANCAP crash testing methods relate to real world crashes.

    Karl Posted on 04 August 2008 9:57pm
  • Well done Ford! Shame on Holden and Toyota... if the Falcon can, why cant the Commodore and Camry variants??

Pete of Melbourne Posted on 04 August 2008 8:32pm
  • Well done ford. Truely making a world class product in only a small market. If only the potential of this car was realised by the idiots in the ole US of A who call the export shots. My only problem is I can't afford a nice Xr6t :(

    Graham Posted on 04 August 2008 7:24pm
  • That is great. I glad about the new Ford Falcons safety Ranks.

Coolio Hunt Posted on 04 August 2008 7:04pm
  • Congratulations to Ford - It might not be 'Win on Sunday, sell on Monday' but it is pretty close. I'm sure that we will see lots of advertising telling us that the Falcon is a 5 star car. A pity that it has taken 7 years for the local industry to match the French (2001 Renault Laguna).
