Ferrari has released official photos of a one-off car built for Eric Clapton.

The Ferrari SP12 EC – the last two letters being the rock god’s initials – reportedly set Clapton back about $4.75 million, although Ferrari declines to reveal the price.

The SP12 EC was created by the Italian supercar maker’s styling studio Centro Stile Ferrari as a joint project with famed design house Pininfarina.

In an official statement, Ferrari confirmed that the one-off car was influenced by Clapton’s love of the 1970s and early 80s 512 Berlinetta Boxers he’s previously had in his enviable carport.

"The world-famous guitar player has been attached to one particular Ferrari model: the 512 BB, of which he has owned three over the years," Ferrari says in a statement. "So his desire was to drive a car inspired by this model, with influences from the multi-award-winning 458 Italia."

The SP12 EC is based on a Ferrari 458 Italia, with body styling inspired by the 512 BB.  However, it is also reportedly still carrying the 458’s 4.5-litre V8 engine rather than the 6.0-litre V12 Clapton is said to have wanted.

That small glitch doesn’t seem to have dampened his enthusiasm for the project. For Eric Clapton, following the car through from what was essentially a blank canvas was ‘one of the most satisfying things I've ever done’, the Ferrari statement says.

Yes, we suppose that even after a stellar 50-year career that includes three inductions to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, membership of seminal bands such as The Yardbirds and Cream, and placing second (behind Jimi Hendrix) in Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time, designing your own Ferrari would be a highlight.

Ferrari's release of the official photos follows the spy video work of intrepid supercar spotter Shmee, who caught the car as it left the London showroom.

  • Perhaps the money would've been better spent on a kids hospital or hospice...

  • The 458's 5.4L engine, I think they mean 4.8L also that looks pretty nice.

  • Stick to making music EC. How to ruin a perfectly beautiful 458 in 4.75m.

  • The engine in the 458 is a 4.5-litre and not a 5.4-litre.

  • Now that his stage guitar performances are so "safe" that momma won't mind him as a son-in-law, it's good to see he still has some drive left in there.
