Diesel not on Hyundai agenda

    In the US, the Hyundai i45 will be available with LPG and as a petrol-electric hybrid. "The hybrid is just for the US, but if the market is ready we will consider it," says Hyundai Australia CEO Edward Lee.

Hyundai doesn't seem all that convinced about the success of diesel in its passenger cars and has released the i45 medium-sized sedan without a diesel option.

CEO Edward Lee says diesel isn't on their agenda, despite the fact that the Sonata the i45 replaces had a two-litre diesel engine.  "At the moment, we don't have that plan but we have some different ideas," he says.

In the US, it will be available with LPG and as a petrol-electric hybrid.  "The hybrid is just for the US, but if the market is ready we will consider it."

He rejected a stronger V6 engine for the i45, declaring that the 2.4-litre petrol Theta II engine "performs like a V6".  Product planning manager Roland Rivero says diesel does not represent a high proportion of their car sales or throughout the medium-car segment.

"Looking at the sales split for petrol versus diesel in Mondeo and Mazda6 it it struggling to grow," he says.  "It's not huge in this segment.  But if the market demands it, we will investigate an alternative fuel, but it might not be diesel."

  • One of the major reasons Hyundai do not want to introduce a diesel version is that a DPF (diesel particle filter) is almost mandatory on all new diesel cars which has proven to be a warranty and service nightmare for the car dealers and car owners. We bought a VW Golf 1.4TSI DSG over an i30 diesel Auto (manual not currently fitted with DPF) from our terrible $$$ experience with DPF's on Citroen/Peugeots and an 09 Nissan X-Trail diesel.

  • I can't believe Hyundai are not introducing a diesel variant of this car to Australia. They have the i30 diesel which is very popular and cheap to run. My wife has the i30 SX diesel with manual transmission and she regularly gets 1000km out of 50 litres (56mpg). We have had it 2 and a half years and 85000km on the clock with no trouble at all but we would like something a little bigger. We would buy the i45 if only it came in Diesel manual. Come on Hyundai Australia they are available in Europe why not bring them here?????

  • Looks like any other HONDA from the front...typical contrived styling we've come to expect from Hyundai...lots of knife edge creases to become a Panel Beaters nightmare..okay on the inside but no obvious space for Satnav...Not a lot to separate base model from Top of Range....same mistake as Mitsu made with 380.......would only buy for $$ value and Warranty

  • Why not introduce the LPG here seeing as our market is familiar with it and very ready to embrace it.
