COTY 2006: Audi Q7

Many of the judges marked this one down because of its imposing size and a perceived lack of suitability for the urban environment. A pity, as the Q7 is one of the best of the large SUVs to hit the local market recently and is a friendly giant.

The 3.0-litre diesel Q7 has comfort, space, fuel economy, towing capacity, safety, driving dynamics and features.

The Q7 package is impressive. The V6 diesel also proved surprisingly efficient, if a little on the noisy side.

Coupled to the six-speed tiptronic box, the big car was easy to drive, had more than enough grunt for comfortable highway cruising and space for all the family.

While the Q7 doesn't have a low range, the smart quattro AWD system gives it better than moderate off-road credentials.

At $85,700 the Q7 is no bargain but it does represent value in the luxury SUV market.
