Caltex rolls outs E85

Biofuels such as ethanol are fuels of the future as they are produced from renewable sources and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Caltex Australia spokesman Frank Topham says.

Major fuel retailer Caltex will have more than 100 service stations across the nation selling fuel with up to 85 per cent vegetable-based ethanol by next year.

Eleven sites in Melbourne will kick off the new fuel stream this month. Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra will be added by the end of October, making a total of 30, before greater expansion of the network into next year.  Caltex Australia says it will call its new product Bio E-Flex, having up to 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol, also known as E85.

This confirms beliefs that the coming new Holden Commodore VE Series II will have some engines able to run on E85.  "Biofuels such as ethanol are fuels of the future as they are produced from renewable sources and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Caltex Australia spokesman Frank Topham says.

About 400 Caltex outlets in the eastern states already offer E10 fuel (10 per cent ethanol) and will continue to do so. Other fuel companies also offer E10. Many modern cars can run on E10. Caltex says sites that will have E85 also will have the normal range of petrol and LPG.

Caltex claims its Bio E-Flex will have an octane rating of up to 105 RON. This is a higher "energy" level than even 98RON premium unleaded.  The coming new Commodore E85 engine has been engineered to accept any ethanol blend up to 85 per cent.

But not all existing cars can run on E85 with assured no trouble with engine and fuel line components. It is recommended motorists check with their car manufacturer.

  • Jim, there's no sugar in ethanol. I don't know where you got that idea from. Ethanol is corrosive, but that's due to small traces of water (generally 3%-5%) that cannot be removed through any treatment or process

  • I have never liked ethanol. Alright for the V8 Supercars to say it's okay to use, but their engines get pulled down after every race and redone. How about normal street cars? Sugar is corrosive. Can't be healthy. Thing is, why is E85 coming out now? This technology has been around for a few years. So people have to buy new cars now to suit the environment? Rort alright.

  • Hopefully this really takes off with tuned turbo cars.

  • Unless E85 is 25% cheaper than regular unleaded petrol, you are out of pocket big time.

  • I wouldn't even put that in my wipper snipper.

  • GM & Volkswagon were building Fuel-flex vehicles in Brazil, which can run automatically any variation of petrol/ethanol up to 100% ethanol, when I visited them 8 years ago. GM Brazil were importing Australian Holden Commodores which ran on the standard Brazilian petrol E30 (35% ethanol). Only modification made was a higher quality metal fuel line, & a re-programming of the engine management computer. Engines run cleaner & last longer. At that time even GMH were recommending against E10 in Australia. Now that GMH have finally publically seen the light it`s time for the scare campaigns against ethanol to cease.

  • E85 preformance you will find that because GM are currently publisicing it that it will be rubbished by a number on here for that reason only

  • Ethanol will not ruin your engine, take a look in other countries that have been using it for years. No engine problems there and actually your engine will run cleaner with no carbon build up. Honda, Mitsubishi, Saab just to name a few all have E85 vehicles. Show me a gas guzzling Honda? Not to mention it will all help to decrease our dependance on oil imports. So where is the scam and rort? Coming from the negative people I think.

  • E85 will ruin your engine fullstop. Even if its designed?? to use it. It will dramatically shorten your engine life. This is a scam

  • In NSW, the scandalous Labour government has legislated that normal unleaded fuel cannot be sold on E10. Now I have to run either premium (and pay for the privilege) or E10 and ruin my car. Whatever happened to choice? If they want to persist with this ethanol experiment well and good but dont take away our choice. I agree with the realist. ETHANOL IS A SCAM!

  • E85 is also a great preformance fuel Mr Conspiracist.

  • E85 is a rort and a con job by GM and big oil to keep making gas guzzlers
