380 sales not happening

Mitsubishi: worst month of sales for Adelaide-built 380 sedan an "anomaly."

Just 658 of the model were sold new in August, more than 38 per cent down on the 1069 in the same month last year. The previous lowest sales month was June last year when 719 cars were sold.

The car was launched in October, 2005. Up to 1650 cars a month were sold in the early days of the model's release.

In releasing its Vfacts figures, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries reported record August sales of new cars and commercial vehicles.

The 88,206 sold was 6545, or 8 per cent, more than August last year and beat the best August 2005 by 2029.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia management yesterday said it was “not happy” with August's 380 sales.

“But it is not a trend. It is an anomaly,” corporate affairs manager Lenore Fletcher said. She said a changeover from Series II to the upgraded Series III model 380 in the month had left some variants unavailable.

Ms Fletcher said the low for 380 sales was not to be interpreted that the end was in sight for production at the Tonsley Park plant.

“We are quite confident sales will be back up in September and October. We don't expect that (low figure) to continue,” she said.

The Vfacts figures show the new Toyota Corolla small car came close to knocking off the Holden Commodore as Australia's biggest selling car last month. Third most popular was the Toyota HiLux ute. The Mazda3 is ahead of the Ford Falcon in year-to-date sales.

  • Gary, you are wrong. According to a study by the motoring associations, 380 has the highest resale vale at 12 months old of all aussie made vehicles. The problem with 380 is it just has no appeal. B.....y good car but who want's one?

  • The main problem with Mitsubishis is the depreciation is the worst of all car brands!

  • I agree with Nick's comment that the 380 is under represented at the dealers, I also went to a dealer a month or so ago and not one single base model in the yard !! The ONLY 380 in the yard was a series 2 VRX. I thought they must have been selling so many they were sold out and production cant keep up. What is the deal here Mitsubishi ?? How can they sell them if they cant show them ??

  • The problem with the Magna... I mean 380. Is that here in Australia we like our big sedans to be rear wheel drive (like they should be for a car this size!). Because, when you load up the boot or attach a trailer/caravan you're taking the weight off the front wheels and loosing that extra bit of control that could make all the difference in an emergency. The Magna... 380, is a good car and I think that if it was rear wheel drive it wouldn't be having the sales problem.

  • I cannot understand that the Mitsubishi 380 sales are dropping. My experience is that all products from this company are good vehicles. Also please include SMITHYS articles in your newsletters

  • How about having a search option for used cars running on LPG?

  • I went into a Mitsubishi dealer and the 380 was hardly represented, seems like dealers did not want to sell them. Maybe they get a better cut on the other models.
