We love the Falcon and so do you!

Congratulations Ford - our car of the year and your people's choice for 2008!

Large family cars may be falling out of favour in the marketplace, but they still proved to be your favourites in the carsguide people’s choice 2008 award.

Leading the pack was the Ford Falcon G6E, with 25.7 per cent of the votes, followed by the Holden Sportwagon  with 15.6 per cent.

And judging by the comments you sent about the Ford, it has a very large fan club among the Australian public.

Ford has finally got a winning formula in the G6E Turbo. Style, performance, overall quality and a reasonable price (no luxury tax) combine to make this car one of Ford Australia’s great offerings and possibly its saviour in these tough economic times. It is an Aussie built car for Australia by Australians that can and will compete with the best of the best from the rest of the world. -- Harry Firth, Sydney

G6E Turbo … it’s got the looks, style, fantastic seats and ride quality all round, and to boot it’s and Aussie made car. I am all for it. -- Stuart Hanley

$ for $ it is hard to go past the Ford, so many features at such a relatively small price.  Produced in Oz, service centres everywhere, built for our conditions. Gotta be a pick for the realist rather than the dreamer. -- David Bottrill

I have always been a Holden man but this last Falcon seems to be oozing style and performance and of cause one must look at value for money. -- Ron Hodges, Tamworth NSW

I got one of the first G6E Turbos and it is a bloody brilliant car. I don’t think that there is a better value car on the road today and the fact that it looks and handles so good tells me that Ford got it right. Well done, Ford. It’s a pity that people are so blind about brand names when they purchase a car because this vehicle outpoints all other Aussie cars bar none. -- Stephen Hickman, Warrnambool Vic

I have owned the non-turbo version since July and it is the finest car I have ever owned. -- Philip Otteraa, Melbourne Vic

Thanks to everyone that voted.

  • HAVE YOUR SAY - WHICH CAR DO YOU THINK SHOULD WIN?

Ron you miss the point at all levels. Sure people buy cars that suit them, they would be stupid not too, That is not the argument. Ford have built a world class car designed and engineered HERE!. That the celebration, Is a Aussie product! It has received praise from motoring editors all around the country, It has won engineering awards, and a five star safety rating. The car is bloody good in all the important areas of automotive engineering and design if not bloody excellent. Why would you compare a corolla, hell a corolla with a falcon or commodore. I drive a new lancer it only achieves 7.8 ltrs per 100 kms at the very best. I doubt the corolla would do any better. People who opt for the larger car can now by an AUSTRALIAN world class car.

If the FG is such a good car why isn’t anybody buying them? They can’t be that good.

Well, after following the development of the FG Falcon for quite some time and reading reviews and comments by FG owners, I purchased a G6E Turbo.

I have to say that it is the best car I have ever owned in terms of ride, comfort, quality, plushness, power, luxury and looks.

I have owned Holdens and (more recently) two Subarus and I can say the build quality of the FG is just as good as any Subaru (and probably any Holden).

This is a car that is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Quiet, smooth and refined around town, returning an average/constant 8 to 9 Litres/100ks on the highway, but can be a beast when you want it to be, making the odd V8 shake in its boots.

In all, Ford have produced another Aussie icon IMO.

I used to own a Falcon.

Even though I now drive a Lexus, I still think that the Falcon has improved out of sight and is a great looking car in my opinion.

Ford deserve all the accolades they get for such a great car. And to all those Commodore fans out there who will no doubt bag it and gas-bag on about how much superior their car is, just let it be.

I don’t drive a Holden, but I’ll tell you one thing this is a much better car.

Don’t worry though. I’m sure Holden will just bring out an even better car. And then Ford will bring out a better car.

They just keep improving and it doesn’t matter which you drive, Holden or Ford, that is good for everybody.

Including those who don’t drive either, because their make has to keep improving to keep up.

So here’s to Ford’s success this year and to even better cars in the future no matter who makes them.

As usual the Australian motoring journalists have decided on a big Aussie six. Are you all so blind to see the real buyers market in Australia.  Without rental companies or government fleets these cars would be extinct. Ford built quality is a joke, Holden have more recalls than dinners! Ford can’t sell a FG to save it’s self and Holden have car parks full of it’s cars at every dealership in the country.
Just go and join Wheels magazine and put another big Aussie six on the next cover, the public will still buy with it’s pocket and it’s not a Aussie six.

I drive a Fmont BAII (18mths old when purchased). before this I only drove holdens but no matter how many commodores I test drove, I kept coming back to the BA 2. 100000ks later and she’s still purring away, smoothly comfortable. I can only imagine what the G6E must be like - Well done FORD

Great car, fantastic range. Well done! Can’t wait to upgrade our XR6 to the new FG!

Starting to see lots of the G series, XR’s and Utes about too. The good news about 5 star safety, superior economy, substantially better performance, better build, refinement & visibility are all getting out.

The base Falcon gave the Commodore a ‘spanking’ on Top Gear Australia. Their words.

NB Oct 08 vs Oct 07 Commodore sales are down 14.2%, Aurion down 31.7%, Falcon UP 12.6%

The Falcons suffer from being sold mainly to fleet buyers as a new vehicle.  The fleet operators have been looking at fuel costs where the big cars use to outright win on overall cost of ownership.

For my situation, I’m best off with a 3 year old Falcon/Fairmont compared to a Camry or Corolla.  I enjoy the comfort, the lazy effortless long distance cruising and the low overall cost of ownership.

Servicing of the big fords is cheap when a filter is 1/5 of the cost of a Japanese/Euro, all parts seem to be affordable and there is a simplicity that I’ve not seen in other makes of vehicle.

It would be less of a recession coming if Australia still had a manufacturing industry, if only Aussies bought Australian goods.

T - Perth… I applaud you. Very well said.

Ron from Mt Colah, you raise some very good points but this article is more than just about the G6ET. This is about recognising the entire range of Ford as presented by the new FG series Falcon. I have an XR6 Turbo on LPG which costs me HALF the price to run of my mates 4 Cylinder Camry, yet i have 400HP! Ford have had an (albeit aging) LPG version of the Falcon for many years which allow those who dont want to compromise down to a small, weak, box on wheels 4 cylinder but want the power and torque of an inline 6 WITH the economy of a 4 Cylinder! And now world class safety and build quality come standard!

This goes beyond that even, this is about Australian pride in a completely australian designed and made vehicle. Australia can mix it with the BEST of the world and i for one am proud.

Even the naturally aspirated Falcon XT has more Torque yet better fuel economy than the Supercharged Toyota V6 Aurion! It is barely 0.5l/100km worse than a standard Toyota Aurion yet provides a raft of better features and power (Torque). The problem here as you have rightly pointed out is the publics (mis)perception of Fords, such as yours. Its Fords poor marketing that lets it down in my opinion.
